  • The theory of seven emotions is a unique theory in oriental medicine which describes the mutual relationship between body and mind of human. Although, the term 'Seven emotions' was not clearly indicated in ${\ulcorner}$The Yellow Emperor's Internal Classic(黃帝內經)${\lrcorner}$, it is appeared in ${\ulcorner}$A Treatise on the Three Catagories of Cause of Diseases(三因方)${\lrcorner}$ written by Chen Yan(陳言) in South-Song Dynasty. It seemed that Chen Yan explained seven emotions as the internal etiologic factor according to the classification of seven emotions of ${\ulcorner}$Ye-Gi(禮記)${\lrcorner}$ under the academic influence during Song Dynasy which emphasized more on the standard of right and wrong rather than individual emotion. Meditation or consideration modulates the function of spleen and stomach and the metabolism of blood and body fluid and it also controls the various emotions and maintains the equilibrium of human body. Human emotions are influenced by the changes of nature and deeply related to time and space including social-environmental factors. The function and strength of seven emotions: joy, anger, anxiety, worry, grief, apprehension and fright are determined by the external stimulation as the causes of illness.

  • The purpose of this study is to consider how Kim Young-hun approached and treated diseases caused by seven emotions using Cheonggang medical records database. Kim Young-hun often related seven emotions with qi, phlegm, fire and depressions of these three and with the loss of dignity (脫營). Records of seven emotions were especially concentrated in the 1950s, and it seems to have been influenced by the Korean war. The prescriptions which Kim used frequently were introduced as modified 六鬱湯. Analyzing the medicinal herbs Kim used, it was estimated that Kim would have applied "allevating phlegm and regulating qi" as the principle of the treatment of the seven emotions using 二陳湯 and Cyperus(香附子) with some adjustment of 利濕藥, 疏導藥, 淸熱藥, and 四物湯.

  • Objectives: Seven Emotions consist of Joy(喜), Anger(怒), Anxiety(憂), Thought(思), Sorrow(悲), Fear(恐), Fright(驚). If Seven Emotions are excessive, their extreme mental stimulations cause physical illness. The aim of the research is to make a proposal on the concept of Seven Emotions by a statistical comparison between guibi-tang questionnaire and health related questionnaires. Methods: We studied the similarities among three factors of guibi-tang questionnaire and three health related questionnaires(subjective symptoms of fatigue test, beck depression inventory, state-trait anxiety inventory, etc.) using multidimensional scaling. Results and Conclusions: 1. Physical-Emotion Dimension and Chronic-Acute Dimension were labelled in two-dimensional solution. 2. Seven Emotions and Fatigue have a high correlation. 3. Seven Emotions and Trait-Anxiety have a high correlation.

  • Objectives: To investigate emotional characteristics of healthy adults using the Core Seven Emotions Inventory-Short Form (CSEI-s) and to investigate the correlation between the CSEI-s and Korean version of the Perceived Stress Scale (K-PSS). Methods: Overall, 2,178 healthy adults aged ≥19 years who completed the CSEI-s and K-PSS in a nationwide multicenter study were included in this study. One-way analysis of variance was performed to identify associations of seven emotions with sociodemographic characteristics. Bonferroni corrected post-hoc tests were performed for multiple comparisons. Pearson's correlation analyses were conducted to examine the correlation between each emotion and stress. Results: Scores of all emotions except for joy (喜) and stress were significantly greater in women than in men. However, the score of joy (喜) in women was significantly less than that in men. There were significant differences in joy (喜), thought (思), depression (憂), fear (恐), and fright (驚) according to age groups in both men and women. The score of depression (憂) was significantly lower in women attending or graduating from graduate school than in those attending or graduating from undergraduate school. Significantly lower scores in joy (喜), thought (思), depression (憂), sorrow (悲), fear (恐), and fright (驚) were observed in married men than in single men. There were significant positive correlations between depression (憂) and stress and between sorrow (悲) and stress in both men and women. Conclusions: There were significant associations of seven emotions with sociodemographic characteristics in healthy adults.

  • This study is related to the acquisition of physiological signals of human emotions and the recognition of human emotions using such physiological signals. To acquire physiological signals, seven emotions are evoked through stimuli. Regarding the induced emotions, the results of skin temperature, photoplethysmography, electrodermal activity, and an electrocardiogram are recorded and analyzed as physiological signals. The suitability and effectiveness of the stimuli are evaluated by the subjects themselves. To address the problem of the emotions not being recognized, we introduce a methodology for a recognizer using prototype-based learning and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The design involves two main phases: i) PSO selects the P% of the patterns to be treated as prototypes of the seven emotions; ii) PSO is instrumental in the formation of the core set of features. The experiments show that a suitable selection of prototypes and a substantial reduction of the feature space can be accomplished, and the recognizer formed in this manner is characterized by high recognition accuracy for the seven emotions using physiological signals.

  • Human health is affected by not only physical conditions but also mental and social well-being. Changes of human emotions show up as gestures, facial expressions and sweating. Human emotions are affected by such automatic nerve system functions as blood pressure, blood circulation speed, heart beats, pupillary reflex, fluid transfusion, muscular contraction and digestive organs, all of which influence the holistic diseases. The Oriental Medicine sees from a perspective of unity of divinity and men that human life activities are united in terms of their physical and mental functions. From such a perspective, human Five Organs are linked with Five Mental(五神) and Seven Emotions(七情), while they are affected by each other, influencing the life activities both directly and indirectly. Based on Confucianism, Sa-Sang Theory argues that human emotions can be categorized into four energy states and therefore, that human diseases and physiological conditions there of may be determined differently depending on the Four Energies(四氣). There seems to be some common points between Sa-Sang Theory and the conventional Oriental Medicine in that human emotions affect individuals' health conditions, so there seems to be much room for mutual complementation.
