  • We report on a Soeumin patient with spontaneous sweating after a lung segmentectomy resulting from aspergillosis. During her inpatient stay, the patient received Soeumin Gwakhyangjunggi-san, Hwanggigyeji-tang, and Seungyangikgi-tang for herbal medication. She also received acupuncture, moxibustion, pharmacopuncture, and cupping therapy. A numeric rating scale (NRS) was used to assess the improvement of symptoms. Sweating was reduced, as reflected by an NRS change from 7 to 0, when the herbal medication changed from Soeumin Gwakhyangjunggi-san to Hwanggigyeji-tang. General weakness and chest discomfort were also relieved after using Hwanggigyeji-tang and Seungyangikgi-tang. These results suggest that Hwanggigyeji-tang and Seungyangikgi-tang are clinically effective for Soeumin patients who are appropriately diagnosed with yang collapse syndrome in the postoperative setting.

  • The anemia which is accompanied with chronic primary diseases has been showed most frequently in the clinic. The purpose of this study is to give an account of the effects of the Korean herbal medicine therapy which is based on the constitutional medicine for the patient who has suffered from mild anemia, pneumonia and general depressed condition in the chronic stage of post-cerebellar hemorrhage. The subject is a 75-year-old woman who has had the symptoms caused by hemorrhage, which are headache, dizziness, walking disturbance, dysphasia, and general weakness and so forth. Therefore, she has normocytic normochromic anemia in the hematomancy. We have diagnosed her as Soeumin(少陰人) Ulkwangjeung(鬱狂症) and have prescribed Palmulgunjatang(八物君子湯) in accordance with the principle of Seungyangikgi(升陽益氣). The consequence is that the accompanied anemia and genseal depressed condition have improved.

  • Junggi-haham (中氣下陷) is a term referring to lethargic symptoms such as digestive system disorder originating from energy deficiency. The authors applied therapy including Bojungikgi-tang(or Seungyangikgi-tang) and Bi-jeonggyuk method to two patients, one having ptosis and the other stress urinary incontinence, respectively, as Junggi-haham. Bojungikgi-tang is an herbal medication preparation and Bi-jeonggyuk is an acupuncture therapy method, and both are used to treat Junggi-haham symptoms. The combined treatment showed positive outcome, and the result suggests that Bojungikgi-tang and Bi-jeonggyuk are effective treatments for patients diagnosed as Junggi-haham.

  • 1. Objectives This paper investigates the origin, the progressive changes and the constructive principles of Palmulgunja-tang (八物君子湯). 2. Methods Palmulgunja-tang and other related prescriptions were analyzed in terms of their pathological indications, based on previous literature including "Donguisusebowon Chobongwon (東醫壽世保元 草本卷)", "Donguisusebowon Gabobon (東醫壽世保元 甲午本)", "Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)" and "Dongmuyugo (東武遺稿)". 3. Results and Conclusions 1) The Palmulgunja-tang most likely originates from Paljin-tang introduced in "Donguisusebowon Chobongwon (東醫壽世保元 草本卷)". Paljin-tang progressively transformed into Seungyangpalmul-tang ("Donguisusebowon Gabobon (東醫壽世保元 甲午本)") and ultimately into Palmulgunja-tang ("Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)"), a prescription appropriate for usage in the Ulgwang symptomatology (鬱狂證). Also, Seungyangikgi-tang in "Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)" can be presumed to have been affected by Seungyangpalmul-tang. 2) The variational prescriptions (變方) of Palmulgunja-tang shows increasing Seungyang (升陽) effect in order of Baekhaogunja-tang, Sipjeondaebo-tang, Palmulgunja-tang, and Doksampalmul-tang. 3) Palmulgunja-tang is composed of 8 herbs. Of these, Paeoniae Radix Alba (白芍藥), Glycyrrhizae Radix(甘草), Angelicae gigantis Radix (當歸), and Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) fortify the Soeumin Spleen Element (脾元). Ginseng Radix (人蔘) and Astragali Radix (黃芪) support the ascension of Yang, whereas Atractlodis Rhizoma White (白朮) and Citrus unshiu (陳皮) encourage the descension of Yin.
