  • Annular and solid concrete specimens with different aspect ratios and static unconfined compressive strengths were studied for impact loading using SHPB test setup. Numerical simulations in LSDYNA were also carried out and results were validated. The stress-strain curves obtained under dynamic loading were also compared with static compressive tests. The mode of failure of concrete specimen was a typical ductile failure at high strain rates. In general, the dynamic increase factor (DIF) of thin solid specimens was higher than thick samples. In the numerical study, the variation of axial, hydrostatic and radial stresses for solid and annular samples was studied. The core phenomenon due to confinement was observed for solid samples wherein the applied loads were primarily borne by the innermost concrete zone rather than the outer peripheral zone. In the annular samples, especially with large diameter inside hole, the distribution of stresses was relatively uniform along the radial distance. Qualitatively, only a small change in the distribution of stresses for annular samples with different internal diameters studied was observed.

  • This paper presents a novel high frequency transformer linked full-bridge type soft-switching phase-shift PWM control scheme DC-DC power converter, which can be used as power conditioner fur small-scale fuel cell power generation system. Using full-bridge soft-switching DC-DC converter topology makes possible to use low voltage high performance MOSFETs to achieve high efficiency of the power conditioner. A tapped inductor filter is implemented in the proposed soft-switching converter topology to achieve soft-switching PWM constant high frequency operation for a wide load variation range. to minimize circulating and idling currents without using additional resonant circuit and auxiliary power switching devices. The practical effectiveness of the proposed soft-switching DC-DC converter is verified in laboratory level experiment with 1 kW 100kHz breadboard setup using power MOSFETs. Actual efficiency of 94-96$\%$ is obtained for the wide load range

  • The process of energy separation in a low pressure vortex tube with compressed air as a working medium is studied in detail. Experimental data of the temperature of the cold and hot air leaving the vortex tube are presented. The variation of the maximum wall temperature along the inner surface of a vortex tube and the temperature distribution in a vortex tube provide useful information about the location of the stagnation point of the flow field at the axis of the vortex tube Analysis of the results enabled to find the optimum ratio of nozzle area and the optimum shape of an orifice. From this optimum geometric setup of a low pressure and big vortex tube the effectiveness of energy separation was better than a high pressure and small vortex tube.

  • The acoustic absorption coefficient and acoustic impedance of 5 species of softwood(sonamoo, sam namoo, gusang namoo, hwaback, sitka spruce) and 5 species of hardwood (Mulgusul namoo, Italian popular, white meranti, red meranti, kalantas) were measured by the standing wave method. which is simple in the setup and gives more accurate result than does any other measuring method. The dependence of the absorption coefficient and complex acoustic impedance on the wood sections. thickness of the sample itself and the back air gap was investigated experimentally in the frequency range from 200Hz to 1800Hz, and the result are as follows: 1. The acoustic absorption coefficient of wood sections was higher on the cross section than radial and tangential sections. 2) The acoustic absorption coefficient were higher in the frequency range from 400Hz to 600Hz, but decreased in the frequency above 600Hz. 3. The genenal tendency of the variation of the normal acoustic impedance was increased according to the frequency. 4. The acoustic absortion coefficient was increased in the to 7mm-thick sample and decreased in 9mm-thick sample. 5. The higher acoustic absorption coefficient was shown in the case with the backing an gap than in the case without the gap.

  • This research suggests maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for the solar photovoltaic (PV) power scheme using a new constant voltage (CV) fractional order incremental conductance (FOINC) algorithm. The PV panel has low transformation efficiency and power output of PV panel depends on the change in weather conditions. Possible extracting power can be raised to a battery load utilizing a MPPT algorithm. Among all the MPPT strategies, the incremental conductance (INC) algorithm is mostly employed due to easy implementation, less fluctuations and faster tracking, which is not only has the merits of INC, fractional order can deliver a dynamic mathematical modelling to define non-linear physiognomies. CV-FOINC variation as dynamic variable is exploited to regulate the PV power toward the peak operating point. For a lesser scale photovoltaic conversion scheme, the suggested technique is validated by simulation with dissimilar operating conditions. Contributions are made in numerous aspects of the entire system, including new control algorithm design, system simulation, converter design, programming into simulation environment and experimental setup. The results confirm that the small tracking period and practicality in tracking of photovoltaic array.

  • We setup a continuous measurement system for electrical conductivity of fluid in a model borehole and verified the basic environments in electrical conductivity measurement for estimating hydraulic constants. The experiment was made by monitoring the conductivity change within the hole using NaCI solution of different salinities and incoming formation fluid using distilled water. The experiment was made under the state of constant flow rate by maintaining balance between inflow and outflow. Conductivity variation features were observed by controlling salinity contrasts and temperature differences between fluid within the hole and incoming formation fluid. flow rate and the location of inlet and outlet. The results of the experiment show well the role of each affecting factor on the conductivity distribution. and suggest appropriate environments for conductivity measurements. It is considered that the basis of the conductivity measurement for henceforward laboratory model and/or in-situ borehole experiment has been prepared.

  • We have developed an ultra wide-field of view Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT) which has capability to 2D and 3D views of cross-sectional structure of in vivo human retina. Conventional OCT has a limitation in visualizing the entire retina due to a reduced field of view. We designed an optical setup to significantly improve the lateral scanning range to be more than 20 mm. The entire human retinal structure in 2D and 3D was reported in this paper with the developed OCT system. Also, we empirically searched an optimized image size for real time visualization by analyzing variation of the frame rate with different lateral scan points. The size was concluded to be $1024{\times}2000{\times}300$ pixels which took 9 seconds for visualization.

  • We investigated about the utilization improvement of the PDMS and fluoropolymers by mutual application in environmental analysis. We were conducted the direct fluorination with mild condition on the PDMS films and analyzed its surfaces before and after fluorination. The results of FTIR and SEM analysis on the PDMS films showed that the film surfaces were fluorinated without irreversible deformation by the fluorination. During the fluorination, the measured contact angles of water and several alcohols on the PDMS films decreased with time and that of most alcohols decreased to 0 after 30 minutes. The surface energy of fluorinated PDMS films has increased by 2 times. Also, we investigated the influence factors on the change of permeation rate of water through PDMS tubes with time. It was observed that the change of permeation rate of water through PDMS tube was affected by temperature, water phase and spatial distribution of water. From these results, we could verify the principal causes of the decrease of permeation rate of water through PDMS tube with time and proposed a new experimental setup for reducing the variation of permeation rate of water less than 2%.

  • A fiber laser of which wavelength was scanned by an intra-cavity FP (Fabry-Perot) filter was used to interrogate a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor array. We calculated the wavelength variation of the fiber laser using quadrature signal processing with an unbalanced M/Z (Mach-Zehnder) interferometer and time-delayed sampling technique. The calculated wavelengths are mapped to corresponding temporal reflection peaks from the sensor array, which enables more accurate and stable interrogation without the problems caused by the FP filter's nonlinear characteristics. Wavelength resolution of ∼20 pm was obtained in our experimental setup, which could have been greatly enhanced with faster phase modulation.

  • The effects of a guide fin blade on the flow characteristics in a ventilating axial fan were investigated experimentally. The guide fins were setup onto the pressure surface of the blade, and their effects on the flowrate were evaluated. Two types of the guide fin blade were designed. One is the stem fin blade, and the other is the radial fin blade. The stem fin is designed normal to the circumference of a circle, and the radial fin is designed along the circumference of a circle. The results from the guide fin blade fans are compared with that of the blade without guide fins. The position and the geometry of the radial fin setting up on the blade have an effect on the increase of flowrate with the minor sacrifice of rotational speed of the blades. The radial fin positioning at 0.84 times blade diameter shows highest performance in the flowrate. The increase of the blade weight resulting from applying the guide fins shows minor effect on the variation of rotational speed of the blades.
