Comparison of Pectin Hydrogel Collection Methods in Microfluidic Device (미세유체 장치에서 수거 방법에 따른 펙틴 하이드로겔 입자의 특성 비교)

  • This study investigated the effect of different collection methods on physical properties of pectin hydrogels in microfluidic synthetic approach. The pectin hydrogels were simply produced by the incorporation of calcium ions dissolved in continuous mineral oil. Then, different collection methods, pipetting, tubing, and settling, for harvesting pectin hydrogels were applied. The settling method showed most uniform and monodispersed hydrogels. In the case of settling, a coefficient of variation was 3.46 which was lower than pipetting method (18.60) and tubing method (14.76). Under the settling method, we could control the size of hydrogels, ranging from $30{\mu}m$ to $180{\mu}m$, by simple manipulation of the viscosity of pectin and volumetric flow rate of dispersed and continuous phase. Finally, according to the characteristics of simple encapsulation of biological materials, we envision that the pectin hydrogels can be applied to drug delivery, food, and biocompatible materials.

Laboratory Study on the Settling Properties of Silty Mud (실트질 점토의 심강(沈降) 특성(特性)에 관한 연구)

  • To investigate the effect of the initial sediment concentration ($C_o$) and bed shear stress (${\tau}_b$) on the settling properties of silty mud, deposition experiments were conducted in a recirculating flume using silty mud sediment taken from the Youngkwang coast which is located in the eastern Yellow Sea. The relative concentration, $C/C_o$ (C=depth averaged concentration), and the relative equilibrium concentration, $C_{eq}/C_o$ ($C_{eq}$=depth averaged concentration in the equilibrium state), have been found to depend much more strongly on the bed shear stress than initial concentration, and to increase with increasing bed shear stress. The minimum value. ${\tau}_{bmin}$, and maximum value. ${\tau}_{bmax}$, of critical bed shear stress for deposition of the Youngkwang sediment were deduced to be $0.017N/m^2$ and $1.25N/m^2$, respectively, and these values depend strongly on the properties of sediment (grain size and mineralogy). Formulas for the relative concentration and apparent median settling velocity in the range of ${\tau}_b{\geq}{\tau}_{bmin}$ were deduced. The apparent median settling velocity was found to depend much more strongly on the bed shear stress than the initial concentration and to decrease exponentially with increasing bed shear stress.

  • 유체의 특성을 나타내는 인자 중에 침강속도에 큰 영향을 미치는 인자 중 하나는 염도(salinity)이다. 염도는 부유사 입자의 응집을 촉진시키고, 입자의 응집은 더욱 큰 침강속도를 초래하는 것으로 알려지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 유체의 염도가 침강특성에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위하여 서로 다른 염도조건(담수와 염수)에서 고령토 퇴적물에 대한 침강실험을 수행하고, 그 결과를 비교 분석하여 염도가 침강특성에 미치는 영향을 정성적 정량적으로 해석하였다.

Economic Design of Activated Sludge System at the Optimum Sludge Concentration (슬러지 농도 최적화에 따른 합리적인 활성슬러지공정 설계방안 연구)

  • The design procedures for a biological reactor and a secondary settling tank (SST) of an activated sludge system are based on the steady state design method (Ekama et al., 1986; WRC, 1984) and the 1-D flux theory design method (Ekama et al., 1997), respectively. This study combined both of the design procedures, to determine the optimum sludge concentration in the reactor and the best design with the lowest cost. The best design of the reactor volume and the SST diameter at the optimum sludge concentration were specified with varying wastewater and sludge characteristics, temperature, sludge retention time (SRT) and peak flow rate. The effects of the influent wastewater characteristics, such as substrate concentration and unbiodegradable particulate fraction, were found to be considerable, but the effect of unbiodegradable soluble fraction was to be negligible. The effects of sludge settling characteristics, were also significant. SRT, as an operating parameter, was found to be an important factor for determining the optimum sludge concentration. However, the effect of temperature was found to be small. Furthermore, for designing a large scale wastewater treatment plant, the number of reactors or SSTs could be estimated, by dividing the total reactor volume or SST area. The new combined design procedure, proposed in this research, will be able to allow engineers to provide the best design of an activated sludge system with the lowest cost.

Removal Characteristics of Total Coliforms in a Rotating Activated Bacillus Contactor Process (회전식 부착 바실러스를 이용한 하수고도처리 공정에서의 총대장균군 제거 특성)

  • This study was performed to examine the disinfection capability of a Rotating Activated Bacillus Contactor (RABC) system, in which the predominant species, Bacillus sp. was expected to have a removal or inactivation effect of total coliforms. In a settling test with mixtures of E. coli and Bacillus sp., a high removal of E. coli was observed at $20{\sim}40^{\circ}C$, while insignificant removal at $10^{\circ}C$. In a batch test, a 4.5% addition of Bacillus sp. to activated sludge considerably enhanced the removal effect of total coliforms, indicating Bacillus sp. played an important role in improving the settlability of the sludge and coliforms. In a pilot scale RABC system, the concentration of total colifroms reduced remarkably in the settling tank, suggesting that total coliforms in the RABC process were eliminated through coagulation and precipitation, probably due to extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) of Bacillus sp. The fraction of Bacillus sp. in the total cell count in the RABC process was in the range of 4.5%~6.3%. The majority (75%) of the Bacillus sp. in the RABC process was Bacillus subtilis which is known to enhance coagulation and precipitation by producing EPS. Hence, an adoption of a RABC process might be able to eliminate the disinfection unit process from a wastewater treatment system.

The Effects of Residual Al on Plankton Community after Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) Application (가압부상 후 잔류 응집제가 플랑크톤 군집에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to test the effect of residual Al on plankton community after dissolved air flotation (DAF) application. Growth rate of phytoplankton after DAF application ($0.37day^{-1}$) was about 2 times lower than that before DAF application ($0.70day^{-1}$). Under the condition of addition of nitrogen and phosphorus without light, growth rate phytoplankton in treatment without residual Al increased in difference with showing the negative growth rate in treatment with residual Al. Under the condition of light without addition of nutrient, growth rate of phytoplankton was no noticeable difference between the before and after DAF application. The relatively high settling rate (0.47 m/day) was observed in treatment after DAF application. Although the abundance of rotifer decreased, the abundance of copepod and cladoceran such as Daphnia galeata, Diaphanosoma sp. and Bosmina longirostris with relative higher grazing was no noticeable difference between the before and after DAF application. In the treatments before and after DAF application with zooplankton, growth rate of phytoplankton was $0.41{\pm}0.08day^{-1}$, $0.20{\pm}0.03day^{-1}$, respectively. This difference was in treatment after DAF application similar with those in treatments before and after DAF application without zooplankton. Those indicate that the filter-feeding effect of zooplankton on phytoplankton community may be not changed by residual Al after the DAF application. These results suggest that residual Al after DAF application be to improve water quality by inhibition of growth rate as well as increasing settling rate of phytoplankton.

Characteristics by Surfactant Condition at Copper CMP (구리 CMP시 비이온 계면활성제의 알루리마 슬러리 안정성에 대한 효과)

  • In this study, physical characteristics of alumina slurry on variation of pH value and the effect of non-ionic surfactants on alumina slurry for copper chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurry have been investigated. After pH value of the slurry with alumina abrasive was changed by adding various amount of $HNO^3$ or KOH, the differences of settling rate, particle size, and zeta-potential were estimated. Better settling rates were shown in slurries with alumina abrasive at near pH 1. Higher zeta-potential was shown at around pH 2 in alumina slurry and the point of zero charge (PZC) was measured at about pH $9\sim10$. Non-ionic surfactant was added in the slurry with 5wt% alumina abrasive to get its effect on slurry practically. Abrasive size was smaller increased when amount of surfactant increased in slurry with P-4 as abrasive; on the other side, it was smaller when amount of surfactant decreased with AES-12. Variation of zeta-potential has no tendency with adding surfactant; however, values of zeta-potential were between $35\sim50mV$. The proper amount of surfactant was $0.1\sim1.0wt%$ in slurry with P-4 and $0.5\sim1.0wt%$ in slurry with AES-12 respectively. The effect of iron oxide ballasted flocculant on the activated sludge settleability and dewaterability (산화철계 가중응집제가 활성슬러지의 침전성 및 탈수성에 미치는 영향)

  • The ballasted flocculation effects of the mill scale and magnetite on activated sludge were investigated. Both ballasted flocculants (BF) could remarkably improve the sludge settleability in terms of zone settling velocity (ZSV) and sludge volume index (SVI). With the BF dosage of 0.2 to 2.0 g-BF/g-SS, the magnetite particles showed better efficiency on improving settling behavior of activated sludge than the mill scale due to higher surface area and hydrophobic property. The efficiency of SVI30 with magnetite injection was 2.5 to 11.3% higher than mill scale injection and that of the ZSV appreciated from 23.7% to 44.4% for magnetite injection. Averaged floc size of the BF sludge with magnetite dosage (0.5 g-BF/g-SS) was 2.3 times higher than that of the control sludge. Dewaterability of the sludge was also greatly improved by addition of the BF. The specific resistance to filtration (SRF) was reduced exponentially with increasing the dosage of BF. However, the BF's particle size effect on the SRF looks to be marginal. Consequently, for improving the dewaterability, the BF played a physical role to remove the pore water of the biological flocs by intrusive attachment and a chemical role to induce aggregation of the flocs by charge neutralization.

Effect of the Liquid Circulation Velocity on the Biofilm Development in an IFBBR (역 유동층 생물막 반응기에서 액체순환속도가 생물막에 미치는 영향)

  • Effect of the liquid circulation velocity on the biofilm development was investigated in an inverse fluidized bed biofilm reactor(IFBBR). To observe the effect of the influent COD concentration on biofilm simultaneously, the influent COD value was adjusted to 1000mg/1 f for 1st reactor, and 2500mg/l for 2nd reactor. The liquid circulation velocity was adjusted by controlling the initial liquid height. As the liquid circulation velocity was decreased, the settling amount of biomass was increased and the amount of effluent biomass was decreased. Since the friction of liquid was decreased by the decrease of liquid circulation velocity, the biofilm thickness was increased and the biofilm dry density was decreased. In the 1st reactor the SCOD removal efficiency was constant regardless of the variation of the liquid circulation velocity, but it was increased by the decrease of the liquid circulation velocity because of more biomass population in 2nd reactor.
