In this paper, a series of repeated load tests were carried out on a 150 mm diameter plate simulative of vehicle passes, to demonstrate the benefits of soil-rubber shred mixture in decreasing the soil surface settlement of road embankment. The results show that the efficiency of rubber reinforcement is significantly a function of the rubber content, thickness of rubber-soil mixture and soil cap thickness over the mixture. Minimum surface settlement is provided by 2.5% of rubber in rubber-soil mixture, the thickness of mixture layer and soil cap of 0.5 times the loading surface diameter, giving values of 0.32-0.68 times those obtained in the unreinforced system for low and high values of amplitude of repeated load. In this installation, in contrast with unreinforced bed that shows unstable response, the rate of enhancement in settlement decreases significantly as the number of loading cycles increase and system behaves resiliently without undergoing plastic deformation. The findings encourage the use of rubber shreds obtained from non-reusable tires as a viable material in road works.

The constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation test has been widely used to evaluate consolidation characteristics of soils instead of the standard Incremental Loading Test. In practical problems, after the ground improvement, the condition of the soil is over-consolidated. Therefore, it is important to determine the recompression indices and the coefficient of consolidation(or the coefficient of swelling) of unloading-reloading cycle to predict the settlement behavior. However, since standard testing procedures or studies related with strain rate are insufficient especially in unloading-reloading cycle, it is difficult to predict the settlement field behavior accurately from the CRS consolidation test results in spite of its lots of strengths. The several CRS consolidation tests were performed changing the unloading strain rate from 0.2%/hr to 20%/hr with vertical drainage condition using the reconstituted kaolinite sample. For the reconstituted kaolinite sample in CRS consolidation test, the recompression indices are insensitive to the strain rate. It is revealed that the coefficient of consolidation of reloading is affected by the developed pore pressure during unloading. Additionally, the test should be conducted in the positive pore pressure ratio range (3~15%) to obtain the reasonable coefficient of consolidation in the whole range(loading, unloading and reloading).

Recently, a 3,250 meter-long tunnel was constructed beneath the sea bed formed of composite sedimentary soils to transport reusable waste heat gas of industrial complex in the west coast of Korea. Some risks such as machine settlement always exist due to the uncertainties of geological and construction factors during the subsea shield TBM tunnelling. In this construction site, the deviation of tunnel alignment caused by shield TBM settlement was occurred during excavation. It was examined that the lack of bearing capacity of soft clay was a main cause. This paper evaluates the risk of shield TBM tunnelling considering the ground conditions. Correlation between machine settlement and its advance rate was evaluated through the analytical equation in which bearing capacity is considered and a 3-D numerical analysis which can simulate the TBM advance condition (in other words, the dynamic condition). It was found out that a shield TBM could settle due to the insufficient bearing capacity of soft clay layers. In order to prevent such the problem, the best advance rate proper to the ground characteristics is needed to be applied. In the ground conditions of the section of interest, it was turned out that if the shield TBM advance rate was maintained between 35 mm/min and 40 mm/min, the machine settlement could be avoided.
In this study, a standard consolidation test (Oedometer) was performed on the relative density of sand in the south coast to evaluate long-term creep settlement characteristics. Experimental results show that the cumulative settlement at the final loading stage decreases as the relative density increases and the variation of the void ratio decreases. As a result of analyzing the settlement rate of long-term creep of sand, creep settlement of 4.7~11.0% occurred depending on relative density with respect to total settlement. The creep parameter, Beta, of Schmertmann et al. (1978) was estimated to be 0.17~0.40 (average 0.21), and it tended to converge to a certain value when the load step becomes more than a certain level. It was found that there is no significant difference in the creep parameter depending on the layer thickness, and it was confirmed that the creep parameter could be applied regardless of the field layer thickness.

In this study, the deformation behavior of Daegok dam during the construction was analyzed based on the measurement data and a comparative analysis with foreign CFRD measurements was performed. From measuring settlements of Daegok dam with depth, overall behavior was evaluated to be consistent with measured data of other CFRD dams. In addition, construction modulus, void ratio and shape factor were also evaluated to be major factors in predicting the settlement behavior during construction of CFRD-typed dam from measured data of 38 CFRD-typed dams, and the maximum internal settlement is proportional to the void ratio. From the relationship between the maximum internal settlement and the height of a dam, 26 dams were assessed to have its relative modulus ranging between 0.001 and 0.01. In case of general CFRD, the average modulus of maximum internal settlement to the height of a dam is estimated to be 0.005. In case of a low void ratio, the construction modulus was high with its shape factor below 4. On the other hand, in case of a high void ratio, the relative settlement rate was high with its shape factor more than 4.
This study proposed scenarios of tax reform regarding taxation on bituminous coal for power generation since July 2015 and July 2014, estimated its impact on SMP, settlement price, tax revenue from year 2015 to year 2029. These scenarios are compared with those of the standard scenario. To estimate them, the power system simulation was performed based on the government plan, such as demand supply program and the customized model to fit Korea's power system and operation. Imposing a tax on bituminous coal for power generation while maintaining tax neutrality reducing tax rate on LNG, the short-term SMP is lowered than the one of the standard scenario. Because the cost of nuclear power generation is still smaller than costs of other power generation, and the nuclear power generation rarely determines SMPs, the taxation impact on SMP is almost nonexistent. Thus it is difficult to slow down the electrification of energy consumption due to taxation of power plant bituminous coal in the short term, if SMP and settlement price is closely related. However, in the mid or long term, if the capacity of coal power plant is to be big enough, the taxation of power plant bituminous coal will increase SMP. Therefore, if the tax reform is made to impose on power plant bituminous coal in the short term, and if the tax rate on LNG is to be revised after implementing big enough new power plants using bituminous coal, the energy demand would be reduced by increasing electric charges through energy tax reform. Both imposing a tax on power plant bituminous coal and reducing tax rate on LNG increase settlement price, higher than the one of the standard scenario. In the mid or long term, the utilization of LNG complex power plants would be lower due to an expansion of generating plants, and thus, the tax rate on LNG would not affect on settlement price. Unlike to the impact on SMP, the taxation on nuclear power plants has increased settlement price due to the impact of settlement adjustment factor. The net impact of energy taxation will depend upon the level of offset between settlement price decrease by the expansion of energy supply and settlement price increase by imposing a tax on energy. Among taxable items, the tax on nuclear power plants will increase the most of additional tax revenue. Considering tax revenues in accordance with energy tax scenarios, the higher the tax rate on bituminous coal and nuclear power, the bigger the tax revenues.

The study decided the improvement depth of soft ground of deep mixing method through 2 and 3 dimension finite element method and following results were acquired. 1. 2 dimension analysis shows settlement 10% more estimated than 3 dimension analysis. 2. When the rate of replacement is under 5%, the settlement sharply increased. 3. The most economical design for the levee was decided 3.0m for width direction, 6.0m for length direction and 8.0m for improvement depth. 4. When the soft ground is developed through deep mixing method, the decision of improvement should be decided through 3 dimension analysis than 2 dimension analysis.
Liquefaction is one of the most devastating geotechnical phenomena that severely damage vital structures and lifelines. Before constructing structures on problematic ground, it is necessary to improve the site and solve the geotechnical problem. Among ground improvement methods dealing with liquefaction, gravel drain (GD) columns and deep soil mixing (DSM) columns are popular. In this study, the results of a series of seismic experiments in a 1g environment on a structure located over liquefiable ground with different thicknesses reinforced with GD and DSM techniques were presented. The dynamic response of the reinforced ground system was investigated based on the parameters of subsidence rate, excess pore water pressure ratio, and maximum acceleration. The time history of the input acceleration was applied harmonically with an acceleration range of 0.2g and at frequencies of 1, 2, and 3 Hz. The results show that the thickness of the liquefiable layer and the frequency of the input motion have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the improvement method and all responses. Among the two techniques used, DSM in thick liquefied layers was much more efficient than GD in controlling the subsidence and rupture of the soil under the foundation. Maximum settlement values, settlement rate, and foundation rotation in the thicker liquefied layer at the 1-Hz input frequency were higher than at other frequencies. At low thicknesses, the dynamic behavior of the GD was closer to that of the DSM.

This investigation aims at the optimum mixing of flexible flowable-fill made of Bottom-ash as an industrial waste. Flowable-fill refer to self-compacted, cementitious material used primarily as a backfill in lieu of compacted fill. The two primary advantages of flowable fill over traditional methods are its ease of placement and the elimination of settlement. Therefore, in difficult compaction areas or areas where settlement is a concern, flowable fill should be considered. This study compares Bottom-ash with fine aggregate in physical character. The mixing design indicates a various mixing-rate.
For soils with high void ratios, the inverse method of utilizing results obtained from centrifuge model test was used to find the constitutive relation of effective stress - void ratio - permeability whereas conventional oedometer test and constant rate of strain consolidation test were also used to fine its relation at ranges of relatively low void ratio. Results of column test about settlement of interface and pore pressure and distribution with time were compared with numerically estimated values to confirm such a constitutive relation as obtained from the inverse method. Consolidational settlement in dredged and reclaimed ground, where the consolidation was in progress, was predicted by using the numerical technique implemented with the finite strain consolidation theory.
