Strength and compressibility characteristics of peat stabilized with sand columns

  • Organic soils exhibit problematic properties such as high compressibility and low shear strength; these properties may cause differential settlement or failure in structures built on such soils. Organic soil removal or stabilization are the most important methods to overcome geotechnical problems related to peat soils' engineering characteristics. This paper presents soil mechanical intervention for stabilization of peat with sand columns and focuses on a comparison between the mechanical characteristics of undisturbed peat and peat stabilized with 20%, 30% and 40% of sand on the laboratory scale. Cylindrical columns were extruded in different diameters through a nearly undisturbed peat sample in the laboratory and filled with sand. By adding sand columns to peat, higher permeability, higher shear strength and a faster consolidation was achieved. The sample with 70% peat and 30% sand displayed the most reliable compressibility properties. This can be attributed to proper drainage provided by sand columns for peat in this specific percentage. It was observed that the granular texture of sand also increased the friction angle of peat. The addition of 30% sand led to the highest shear strength among all mixtures considered. The peat samples with 40% sand were sampled with two and three sand columns and tested in direct shear and consolidation tests to evaluate the influence of the number and geometry of sand columns. Samples with three sand columns showed higher compressibility and shear strength. Following the results of this laboratory study it appears that the introduction of sand columns could be suitable for geotechnical peat stabilization in the field scale.

Analysis of ground behavior for model tunnel excavation with pipe roof reinforcement using close range photogrammetric technique (근거리 사진계측기법을 이용한 강관보강 모형터널굴착의 지반거동 분석)

  • In congested urban areas, constructions of tunnel structures have became necessary due to a lack of surface space. The excavation of any tunnel generated the ground disturbances of surrounding ground and displacements is major concern. Therefore, a study of tunnel stability is necessary. In this study, the authors have investigated the stability and failure pattern of tunnel through the model tunnel test. In this study, the close range photogrammetry was used to measure the ground deformation. The measured data was converted to displacement vectors and contours. And then it compared to FE analysis and empirical formula. In addition, this study presented the comparison between steel pipe reinforced model tunnel and unreinforced model tunnel. The ground deformation for both the steel pipe reinforced model tunnel and the unreinforced model tunnel was analysed.

  • In these days the floor vibration is beginning to make its appearance of the environmental dispute in apartment building. Standard floor system are suggested for the settlement of this issue by government. The sound of floor impact sound is needed to secure comfortable quality in housing. Also, it is required an accurate analysis and a proper evaluation for floor vibration. Refine model is necessary for the floor system of housing to analyze accurately the floor vibration. But this refine model is not efficient because it is required so much running time for vibration analysis and it is difficult of modeling of standard floor slab. In this paper, new modeling methods of standard floor slab are proposed for the accurate rigidity evaluation. By using the new modeling method, the accurate vibration response can be obtained and can accurately evaluate the rigidity of standard floor system with resilient materials. Therefore the proposed modeling method is of practical use for vibration analysis of floor system of apartment building.

The Urbanization and Migration in the Period of the Japanese Occupation (일제 강점기 도시화와 인구이동: 1930년 부(府)와 지정면(指定面) 지역을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the urbanization process and identify the Origin-Destination(O-D) of migration in the period of the Japanese occupation, based on the census data about Bu and Jijung-myeon. For this, the study analysed the types and the location of the immigrants' origin(birthplace) whose headed for an urban area. In 1930, as the destinations in the inter-regional migration, the urban areas could be divided into three categories according to the distance: long-, medium- and short-distance. The new urban areas which developed for effective colonial rule by Japanese pulled the long distance immigrant across the Korean Peninsula, and the Chosun Dynasty's traditional cities had the inflow of population from the near and hinterland. All in all, it is proposed that the dual settlement systems of colonial and traditional structures, is the key to understand the Korean urbanization processes basedd on the inter-regional migration during Japanese colonial period.

  • Reinforcing steel work plays an important role in terms of its structural performance or weight of construction cost for reinforced concrete structures. Precise estimation of re-bar quantity gives a basis for managing the reinforcing steel work effectively. However, the estimation process is still performed ineffectively based upon the expert's experience or manpower in spite of the advanced technology or improvement efforts. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to develop a prototype system for taking-off the quantity of reinforcing steel bars quickly and accurately in an order consistent with the specific members identified on the drawings. An estimate algorithm considering the connection, settlement and coating thickness of re-bars was suggested regarding to their replacement conditions which places more emphasis on constructibility. Also, this system produces the shop drawings automatically with the calculation results.

  • This paper deals with contents on the estimation of rail beam from the geotechnical engineering aspect. Rail beam is reinforced rail installed on the inside and outside of rail to prevent differential settlement during the construction period of railroad crossing construction. Such rail beam is frequently being installed to ensure stability of existing railroad facilities because of increasing constructions of underground structures crossing railroad in recent. However, there is a difficulty in design due to lack of design standard on rail beam length. Furthermore, derailing accidents are also occurring as a result of rail beam length shortage. Accordingly, this paper presented flow chart based on the classification into soil ground and bedrock ground for the rail beam length estimation. In addition, case study was conducted on rail combination and location through which effective rail combination and location were ensured.

Analysis of the Segmental Reinforced Retaining Wall Behavior by Field Monitoring (현장계측을 통한 블럭식 보강토 옹벽의 거동분석)

  • Geogrid reinforced soil structures with segmental block facing have been increased since 1990's, because of the convenience of installation and the flexible appearance. In this paper, the behavior of the segmental reinforced retaining wall was analysed with the results of field monitoring. The height and length of reinforced wall are 12m and 25m, respectively. The field measurement equipments are horizontal and vertical earth pressure cells, settlement plate, strain gauge, inclinometer, and displacement pin. Based on the field monitoring, the horizontal earth pressure was approximately 0.3times higher than that of the theoretical method and the maximum tensile strength of reinforcement was 26.2kN/m. The displacement of facing wall was 23mm at the point of 7.1m height of the wall and toward the wall facing. The results of the study indicate that the segmental reinforced retaining wall is in a stable condition because of good compaction & reinforcement effects, and long period of construction time. Finally, the computer program of SRWall is very useful tool to design the segmental reinforced retaining wall.

  • Face mapping and displacement monitoring during tunnel construction are the most influential information for the stability assessment of ground and around structures. Especially, the result of face mapping and displacement analysis is essential to the excavation and support design in NATM which is based on the drilling and blasting. However, there have not been so many studies to put those useful information into practice for decision-making process during construction. The study reviewed the tunnel behaviour based on the RMR rating and displacement monitoring when the geological condition of rock mass varies inevitably. The study analysed the crown settlement using convergence equation in order to compensate the disparity induced by the location and time of measurement and found a distinct relation between the geological condition and the line of influence. As a result of analysing the various parameters related to the tunnel convergence according to the geological condition, the study suggested the basic knowledge about the relation between face mapping and displacement behaviour of tunnel.

Development of Reinforcement Grout Materials Using Reinforcing Fiber and Blast Furnace Slag Powder (보강섬유와 고로슬래그 미분말 함유량에 따른 차수그라우트재 개발)

  • The grouting method is utilized to reinforce and waterproof poor grounds, enhance the bearing capacity of geo-structures damaged from differential settlement. The purpose of this research is to improve the compressive strength and degree of grout using reinforcing fibers and blast furnace slag powder. In this regard, this study has conducted uniaxial compression tests for the specimens with high ratios (higher than 50%) of blast furnace slag powder. The carbon fiber content was increased by 0, 0.5, and 1.0% to coMpare its compressive strength with that of aramid fiber. The uniaxial compressive strength increased with the increase of fiber content and the bridging activity by fiber in cement tended to increase uniaxial compressive strength. Based on the results, it was confirmed that the aramid fiber has a gel time of 14 seconds and the uniaxial compressive strength is more than 3 Mpa coMpared to carbon fiber.

Effect of New Tunnelling on the Behaviour of Grouped Pile and Adjacent Tunnel (신설 터널굴착이 지중 군말뚝 및 인접 터널의 거동에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • The demand for underground infrastructures such as tunnels is expanding due to rapid urbanization. Tunnels in urban areas are usually constructed adjacent to structures supported by piles. Therefore, a proper understanding of pile-tunnel interaction due to tunnel excavation activities is vital. Thus, in this study, a numerical analysis is conducted to analyze pile settlements, ground surface settlements and shear deformations above an existing tunnel subject to the presence of an adjacent tunnelling, with vertical offsets, the number of piles and the pile spacing considered as variables in the analysis. The results show that the vertical offsets between the tunnel crown and the pile tip generatelarger settlement than the pile spacing. In addition, the vertical offset shows an inversely proportional relationship to the shear deformation due to new tunnelling.
