  • This study examined the long-term behavior of a roadbed using high-speed railway concrete track and roadbed measurement data and evaluated the long-term performance of the track and roadbed. Recently, high-speed railway track type has been adopted as a concrete slab. On the other hand, the concrete track is vulnerable to roadbed settlement. In the case of gravel tracks, it is easy to restore the original state by maintenance even if the roadbed settles. On the other hand, in the case of the concrete track, if excessive settlement of the roadbed occurs, cracks are generated continuously on the slabs and sleepers, resulting in greatly reduced usability. For this reason, it is difficult to restore the original state only by partial maintenance. In this paper, a long-term performance evaluation was carried out on a concrete track during operation by monitoring the measurement data of sensors buried from the beginning of construction for approximately 3 years after the high-speed railway opened. Performance evaluation methods include a performance evaluation of track/roadbed when the train passes, long-term track and roadbed performance evaluation, analysis of the track/roadbed effect on long-term settlement and analysis of the factors influencing long-term settlement. The trail response of KTX-Sancheon was greatest in the track/roadbed performance evaluation by train. The results of the long-term track and roadbed performance evaluation were measured within the standard values. The track and roadbed performance impact assessment with long-term settlement was strongly related to TCL settlement. The influences of the water content and groundwater level were verified by analyzing the external factors of long-term settlement. Through such a method, the stability of a track/roadbed can be secured.

  • Most existing methods for the footing settlement estimation are for either isolated or strip footings. No sufficient details are available for settlement calculation of footings with different shapes and multiple footing conditions, which are commonly adopted in actual construction projects. In this paper, estimation of footing settlements for various footing conditions of different shapes and multiple conditions is investigated based on Schmertmann's method with focus on values of the strain influence factor $I_z$. In order to examine the effect of multiple footing conditions, field plate load tests are performed in sands using single and double plates. 3D non-linear finite element analyses are also performed for various footing conditions with different footing shape and distance ratios. Results obtained in this study indicate that there are two significant components in the strain influence diagram that need to be taken into account for settlement estimation of rectangular and multiple footings: depth of $I_{zp}$ and depth of strain influence zone. Based on results from experimental and 3D non-linear finite element analyses, improved strain influence diagrams available for various footing conditions are proposed.

  • As a new foundation treatment technology, long-short pile composite's design theory is still in primary phase, and there are no explicit settlement calculation methods in active codes. So it is necessary to study the working mechanism and the methods of settlement calculation. In this paper, the mechanics of long-short pile composite foundation are fully discussed. Meanwhile, based on the shear deformation method, the Mylonakis & Gazetas models about mutual action between two piles and the one between pile and soil are introduced, Considering the performance of cushion, the flexible factors of mutual actions are provided. Then the settlement calculation of long-short pile composite foundation which can consider the mutual actions between pile, soil and cap is deduced, and the correlated program is also developed. Finally, an engineering example is discussed with the method. A comparison shows that calculated results and measured data from a field test pile are in a good agreement, indicating that the presented approach is feasible and applicable in engineering practice.

  • Tunnel construction activity, conducted mainly in mountains and within urban centres, causes soil settlement, thus requiring the relevant management of slopes and structures as well as evaluations of risk and stability. Accordingly, in this study we performed a three-dimensional finite element analysis to examine the behaviour of piles and pile cap stability when a tunnel passes near the bottom of the foundation of a pile group connected by a pile cap. We examined the results via numerical analysis considering different conditions for reinforcement of the ground between the tunnel and the pile foundation. The numerical analysis assessed the angular distortion of the pile cap, pile settlement, axial force, shear stress, relative displacement, and volume loss due to tunnel excavation, and pile cap stability was evaluated based on Son and Cording's evaluation criterion for damage to adjacent structures. The pile located closest to the tunnel under the condition of no ground reinforcement exhibited pile head settlement approximately 70% greater than that of the pile located farthest from the tunnel under the condition of greatest ground reinforcement. Additionally, pile head settlement was greatest when the largest volume loss occurred, being approximately 18% greater than pile head settlement under the condition having the smallest volume loss. This paper closely examines the main factors influencing the behaviour of a pile group connected by a pile cap for three ground reinforcement conditions and presents an evaluation of pile cap stability.

  • If roads, bridges, buildings, etc. are built on the ground with soft clay or organic soil, there may be a lot of problems in geotechnical engineering such as settlement and stability due to the large settlement and lack of bearing capacity. In extreme cases, it may appear due to shear failure or collapse of the constructed structure, so a ground improvement method is indispensable to increase the strength of the ground and to suppress settlement. In this study, the settlement according to each groundwater level condition was analyzed using the measurement results for the groundwater level conditions, one of the important factors in predicting the settlement in dredged and reclaimed ground, and the groundwater level conditions applied to the settlement analysis were proposed by comparing it with settlement generated 5 years after construction. As a result of the analysis, it is judged that it is reasonable to apply the measured groundwater level during construction and the low water ordinary neap tide (L.W.O.N.T) during load application for the groundwater level in the settlement analysis. In addition, in the case of the dredged and reclaimed ground, it is estimated that the water pressure acting on the clay layer is nonlinear, as the result of the observations of the head of water at the observation points above and below the in-situ clay layer were different.

  • Previous settlement prediction methods based on settlement monitoring were developed under instantaneous loading condition and have restriction to be applied to soft ground under ramp loading condition. In this study, settlement prediction method under ramp loading was developed. New settlement prediction method under ramp loading considered influence factors of consolidation settlement such as thickness of clayed layer, quantity of surcharge load and preconsolidation pressure, etc. Geometrical correction method based on hyperbolic method (1991) and correction method based on probability theory were applied to increase accuracy of settlement prediction using field monitoring data after ramp loading. Large consolidation tests for ideally controlled one dimensional consolidation under ramp loading condition were performed and the settlement behavior was predicted based on the monitoring data. New prediction method yielded good result of entire settlement behavior by using data during an early stage of ramp load. Additionally, new prediction method offered better settlement prediction which had final settlement prediction in close proximity and low RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) than previous method such as hyperbolic method did.

  • To study the rail mapped deformation caused by the pier settlement of simply - supported bridges with China Railway Track System III (CRTS III) slab ballastless track (SBT) system under the mode of non-longitudinal connection ballastless track slab, this study derived an analytical solution to the mapped relationships between pier settlement and rail deformation based on the interlayer interaction mechanism of rail-pier and principle of stationary potential energy. The analytical calculation results were compared with the numerical results obtained by ANSYS finite element calculation, thus verifying the accuracy of analytical method. A parameter analysis was conducted on the key factors in rail mapped deformation such as pier settlement, fastener stiffness, and self-compacting concrete (SCC) stiffness of filling layer. The results indicate that rail deformation is approximately proportional to pier settlement. The smaller the fastener stiffness, the smoother the rail deformation curve and the longer the rail deformation area is. With the increase in the stiffness of SCC filling layer, the maximum positive deformation of rail gradually decreases, and the maximum negative deformation gradually increases. The deformation of rail caused by the pier settlement of common-span bridge structures will generate low-frequency excitation on high-speed trains.

  • In earthwork projects, the designer considers cut and fill balance for minimizing earthwork which may significantly decrease construction costs. Despite carrying out considerable earthwork design, the decrease in volume of earth occurs in construction sites because of embankment settlement under self-weight, consolidation settlement of soft ground, cavity filling and soil loss due to rainfall-runoff. To reflect the decrease in volume of earth, the specifications for road construction just give shrinkage factors in embankment for soils without consideration of embankment settlement under self-weight. In this study, the computational method is used to estimate the amount of embankment settlement under self-weight developed by Iseda (1972) and Ishii (1976). This research shows that the total compression settlements are between 3 to 10 percent of embankment height according to the property of embankment material and embankment height. As a result, the designer should consider the compression settlement on embankment material under selt-weight.

  • Since allowable settlement of concrete slab track is about 30mm, a lot of attention must be paid to the settlement of the earthwork (reinforced trackbed, upper subgrade, under subgrade) under the concrete track. To this end, more experimental data should be accumulated through tests for these materials. In this study, we evaluate the long-term settlement of reinforced trackbed and subgrade materials using factors such as repeated loading conditions, water content, and grain size distributions in a large triaxial test and a large oedometer test. In cases in which the performance of the reinforced trackbed layer meets the design criteria, the settlement caused by train load was considerably small. But, when the water content increases in the subgrade, unexpectedly large settlement might occur for certain grain size distributions of the subgrade materials.

  • In this study, the deformation behavior of Daegok dam during the construction was analyzed based on the measurement data and a comparative analysis with foreign CFRD measurements was performed. From measuring settlements of Daegok dam with depth, overall behavior was evaluated to be consistent with measured data of other CFRD dams. In addition, construction modulus, void ratio and shape factor were also evaluated to be major factors in predicting the settlement behavior during construction of CFRD-typed dam from measured data of 38 CFRD-typed dams, and the maximum internal settlement is proportional to the void ratio. From the relationship between the maximum internal settlement and the height of a dam, 26 dams were assessed to have its relative modulus ranging between 0.001 and 0.01. In case of general CFRD, the average modulus of maximum internal settlement to the height of a dam is estimated to be 0.005. In case of a low void ratio, the construction modulus was high with its shape factor below 4. On the other hand, in case of a high void ratio, the relative settlement rate was high with its shape factor more than 4.
