  • As business competition gets together, there is much pressure on product development service organizations and manufacturing to become more productive and efficient. Product developers need to create innovative products in less time, even though the products may be very complex. To get this purpose, Six sigma methodology can be used. Six sigma is a strategic approach that works across all processes, all products, and all industries. The purpose of this paper is to develop the innovation strategy for shortening the lead time of the new product using six sigma method.

External Knowledge Search Strategy and Technological Innovation : Small vs Medium Firms (기술혁신을 위한 외부지식 탐색 전략 : 소기업 vs 중기업)

  • In this research, we aim to analyze how different external knowledge search strategies of small and medium enterprises affect technological innovation. In particular, since there has been little comparison between Korean small and medium firms, we investigated the differences of the two groups by employing the "Korean Innovation Survey 2010." As a result, it was found that "external search breadth", which refers to expanding the spectrum of external knowledge search due to lack of resources and capabilities inside small firms, spurred technological innovation. On the other hand, "external search depth", which implies seeking a long-term and close relationship with the subjects that provide outside knowledge for medium firms, catalyzed technological innovation. These results emphasize that we need to separately analyze technological innovation of small and medium firms, which was, in most previous studies, viewed as one group, i.e. SMEs. In addition, the results can be, from the perspective of a firm's growth, interpreted as follows. That is, it is more effective to formulate a "diversity" pursuing strategy in the "small firm" stage where little time has passed since its establishment, whilst it is more useful to apply a "focus" strategy on sophisticated knowledge in the "medium firm" stage where a firm has grown to some extent.

  • Currently many companies have realized that producing efficient product does not guarantee the market differentiation. Realizing the problem, those companies are actively pursuing the servitization strategy. However complexities in selecting the right service areas among many choices along with in developing service strategies and organizational structures remain unsolved to many manufacturing companies. This paper is about an exploratory study in which, through in-depth case analysis, we observed how a manufacturing company successfully managed to transform to the service company. Through this study, we have found that successful transformation needs to resolve many conflicting issues such as channels among existing and new sales front, organizational restructuring due to conflicting in evaluation and human resource requirements required for responding to customers in the field. This 'Hansam' case study provides managers with some guidelines as to how to transform to the service company.

  • Recently, various industrial sectors have introduced cloud service actively in their business because cloud computing technology enables storage·management and analysis·utilization of data easily in anytime, anywhere. Especially in financial sector, the business provocatively adopted the service and creates various innovative cases; furthermore, already in abroad, the sector has been accelerating digitization of analysis in cases of credit risk, financial fraud data, stock trading etc. On the contrary, in the domestic financial industry, not only the cloud service introduction and innovation cases are underperformed, but most of them are focused on the back-office service. Most Korean financial corporations are burdened with the adoption of cloud service due to various conservative regulatory requirements, such as regulations on data storage and management, regulations on privacy, and other tasks such as developing decision models and establishing responsibility standard for security incidents and service failures. In this study, it would be aimed to contribute to promote the introduction of the cloud in the domestic financial sector by drawing up preemptive challenges and inspecting priorities.

  • The airline industry faces with significant competition due to the rise of technology innovation and diversified customer needs. Therefore, continuous quality management is essential to gain competitive advantages. For this reason, there have been various studies to measure and manage service quality using customer reviews. However, previous studies have focused on measuring customer satisfaction only, neglecting systematic management between customer expectations and perception based on customer reviews. In response, this study suggests a framework to identify relevant criteria for service quality management, measure the importance, and assess the customer perception based on customer reviews. Machine learning techniques, topic models, and sentiment analysis are used for this study. This study can be used as an important strategic tool for evaluating service quality by identifying important factors for airline customer satisfaction while presenting a framework for identifying each airline's current service level.

  • Recently, the main concerns of enterprise management activities is how to strengthen the competitiveness to quickly respond to changes and sustain the growth in business environment. As IT(Information Technology) has become to be viewed as a key driver for the business competitiveness, new paradigms, such as business and IT alignment, IT-driven product/service innovation and so on, are regarded as the hot topic in many industries. However, previous studies related to IT evaluation, which is more critical than any other IT activities, have focused on quantitative IT deployment, utilization and its economical effects. Therefore, this study presents the newly-developed evaluation domains and items based on four pairs of relative concepts in industrial informatization, and their multi-dimensional analysis methodology which explains various types of IT characteristics of enterprises. And finally, pilot tests at 2 companies in financial service sector will be performed in order to verify the practicality of the evaluation system.

  • This research analyzed the case of Ncsoft to study the organizational learning, exploitation and exploration that create dynamic capability in hypercompetitive environment. First of all, we demonstrated the activities of exploitation and exploration in Ncsoft according to the life cycle of online game industry. An exploitation related to routine, learning and fit with existing environment brings about incremental innovation. In contrast, an exploration associated with non-learning, flexibility with changing environment results in radical innovation. We examined them based on the life cycle of its various game services. NCsoft that built the leading position in online game industry focused the exploitation activities at the stage of beginning period and growth, whereas NCsoft has increased the activities of exploration at period of mature. In addition, the firm conducts an exploration for its brand new game services and R&D. Conversely, An exploitation is conducted for sustainable updating of patch service and marketing and system building. The result implies that online game companies create sustainable competitive advantage using the balance between exploitation and exploration.

  • The Fourth Sector has been attracting attention as a means to solve the various problems plaguing modern society; it emerged to overcome the Third Sector's issues such as excessive reliance on the government and service model isomorphism, represented by social economy enterprises (Meadows, 1972; Howaldt & Schwarz, 2010). Social venture companies have been mentioned as key agents of the Fourth Sector (Gyeonggi Research Institute, 2018). However, the academic and policy concepts related to social ventures continue to be vague. Therefore, this study aims to clarify the concept of social ventures as part of the Fourth Sector, and research development strategies for the vitalization of the social venture ecosystem in an effort to encourage inclusive growth of society. To achieve these goals, it establishes the concept of social ventures differentiated from the Third Sector, based on previous studies, and presents the importance of an intermediate support organization for the ecosystem's vitalization. Furthermore, to propose strategies for said vitalization, the study derives detailed forms of social venture intermediate support organizations, and provides suggestions regarding their importance and roles through social innovation levels.

  • The purpose of this study is to contemplate the environmental change of the fourth industrial revolution in viewpoint of SME, and to analyze the relevance between the fourth industrial revolution and SME, thereby reviewing the governmental supporting policy for SME. Promising fields of the fourth industrial revolution can be derived from WEF survey, manufacturing innovation, and new growth engine. Also the case of GE's movement could be a good reference. We explored the relevance between the fourth industrial revolution and SME supporting policy, and described the suitability as SME's next item among the various promising fields. When extracting new business items by using the factor of prospective and appropriate conditions, both types such as product or service and subordinate or derivative items would be possible. For the proper action to the fourth industrial revolution, not only the competence enhancing of SME itself but also positive supporting policy of government side are to be considered.

  • The international trade industry is on the brink of a radical Internet-driven transformation. TradeCard is a payment and settlement system that is an alternative to letters of crdeit. That is, TradeCard is a business-to-business e-commerce infrastructure that enables buyers and sellers to conduct and settle international trade transactions securely over the Internet. Paperless, payment-guaranteed international trade transactions - which eliminate the traditional letters of credit with electronic certifications - are widely considered the most difficult B2B transactions to conduct. The TradeCard system was initially built to accommodate and process this complex, cross-border payment type at a US$100 service fee for each transaction of up to US$100,000 since November 1999.
