  • As wireless connectivity is integrated into many handheld devices, streaming multimedia content among mobile ad-hoc peers is becoming a popular application. In this paper, we propose a dynamic service replication algorithm for providing guaranteed continuous streaming services to all nodes in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). First, a MANET is comprised of logical grid hierarchy, and a streaming service is replicated to a lower server region of the logical grid hierarchy by considering the link availability between a mobile node and the streaming server within a server region or the popularity of the streaming service. We evaluate analytically the performance of the proposed algorithm, and compared with that of existing Qin's algorithm. Evaluation results show that our algorithm can achieve better streaming performance than Qin's algorithm. Therefore, the proposed algorithm not only improves the sharing availability of replicated streaming services but also controls efficiently the number of streaming service replications.

  • An HSS(Home Subscriber Server) system requires a main-memory database on main-memory unit for the real-tine management of the subscriber information in the mobile communication service, in that the system controls not only basic data for handling calls of users, but also additional service data related to user authentication and operational data. Nonetheless, HSS-DBS system, requiring the reliability and stability, need more secure data store method and a back-up technique because the system have a long startup time and the big problem on the failures of main-memory. This paper proposes an efficient back-up replication technique, on the basis of enhancing the stability and performance of HSS system. The proposed shadowing back-up technique adopting the delayed recovery process, can help minimize the real-time back-up overloads by location registration, while the proposed backup replication method enables more stable system operations with replicating the data to remote server in real time.

  • The default server strategy is commonly used for location and state managements of mobile host in mobile computing. With this strategy, we can find the cell of destination mobile host to send data by querying the default server. In SDN(single Default Notification) strategy which is a kind of default server strategy, the call is established after the location and state of the callee is acquired to the query server by querying the default server. But the communication cost overhead from the default server is increased if there are large number of cells and query requests, and if it is too far from the default server to a base station. Still more it will be unable to establish any calls to a mobile host when there is a fault in the default server of this host. In this paper, we suggest add evaluate a default server replication strategy to reduce the communication cost overhead and to make the service available.

  • Multiplayer Online Games(MOG) using the Internet are typically organized based on a CS(client-server) or P2P(peer-to-peer) architecture. We then propose a method that combines a P2P architecture with a CS architecture in order to utilize their advantages. Most MOGs use a primary-copy replication approach that provides strong consistency control over an object. For each object and character there exists an authoritative copy, called primary copy and all other copies are secondary copies or replicas. Any update to the object has to be first performed on the primary copy. In the proposed hybrid architecture, primary copies may reside on the server or be held by clients. In this architecture, load balancing between a server and clients can be achieved by reducing the number of objects maintained by the server. Games consist of various types of actions with different consistency requirements. A multi-level approach to game consistency is sensible as it provides the best trade-off between consistency and performance. The performance for the hybrid game architecture with the primary-copy model is evaluated through simulation experiments and analysis in this paper.

  • In order to cope with DoS (Denial of Service) attacks disturbing delivery of intended services by exhausting resources of computing nodes, we need a solution to recognize important resources for the essential services which have to be maintained under any circumstances and to adapt the system to the urgent situation and reconfigure itself properly. In this paper, we present a two-phase scheme to handle the problem. In the first phase, by means of dynamic resource reallocation within a computing node, we try to make the selected essential services survive even after the occurrence of an attack. For the second phase when it becomes impossible to continue the service in spite of the actions taken in the first phase, we apply server replication in order to continue the transparent provision of the essential services with the end users by utilizing redundant computing nodes previously arranged. Experimental result obtained on a testbed reveals the validity of the proposed scheme. A comparison with other proposed schemes has been conducted by analyzing the performance and the cost.

  • Provision of higher throughput without sacrificing consistency guarantees in replication systems is a critical problem. In this paper, we propose a novel approach called Bidirectional Chain Replication (BCR) to improve throughput in traditional Chain Replication (CR) through better utilization of computing and communication resources of the chain. Unlike CR where the whole replicated data store is treated as a single unit, in BCR the replicated shared data at each server in the chain is split into two disjoint Logical Partitions ($LP_1$, $LP_2$). This forms two chains running concurrently on the same hardware in two opposite directions; the first chain ($CR_1$) exclusively manipulates data objects in $LP_1$, while the second chain ($CR_2$) exclusively manipulates data objects in $LP_2$, therefore, conflict is avoided and concurrency is guaranteed. The simultaneous employment of these two chains results in better utilization of hardware in the sense that the two chains can evenly share the workload, hence, throughput can be improved without sacrificing consistency. Experimental results showed an improvement of approximately 85% in throughput of BCR over CR.

  • This paper presents a partially decentralized passive replication algorithm for deterministic servers in message-passing distributed systems. The algorithm allows any backup server, not necessarily the primary server, to take responsibility for processing its received client request and coordinating with the other replica servers after obtaining the delivery sequence number of the request from the primary. Thanks to thus desirable feature, the algorithm with conventional load balancing techniques can efficiently avoid extreme load conditions on the primary. Therefore, it can provide better scalability of deterministic and replicated sewer systems than traditional passive replication algorithms. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm can reduce $16.5\%{\~}52.3\%$ of the average response time of a client request compared with the traditional ones.

  • As the entities participating Grid become larger, performance requirement for the LDAP-based GIS(Grid Information Service) goes beyond that provided by a stand-alone single LDAP server. This entails the exploration of distributed LDAP systems. This paper presents the performance evaluation respectively for a distribution-based and a replication-based LDAP model. The analysis is based on an analytic performance model for each distributed system which is obtained by applying the M/M/1 queuing model. The performance evaluation made to these analytic models reveals that the distribution-based and the replication-based model show a significant tradeoff in their performance with respect to the system size as well as the amount of system load.
