  • The increasing use of nano-positioners in a wide variety of laboratory and industrial applications has created a need for nano-mechatronics education in all engineering disciplines. The subject of nano-mechatronics is broad and interdisciplinary. This article focuses on the way nano-mechatronics is taught in department of mechanical engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). As one model of nano-positioning systems, design and experimental methodology is presented in this article. For design phase, the stiffness and resonant frequencies are found analytically and verified by using a commercial finite element analysis program. Next, for experimental phase, various tests are performed to access the performances of the designed nano-positioner, for example, sine-tracking, multi-step response and travel-range check etc. Finally, the definition of 'separation frequency' is described and some comments are discussed.

  • For asymmetric polyetherimide membranes having a dense layer gradient structure on the skin layer, the morphology change and pervaporation behaviors of water/isopropanol mixture through chemical modification of dense skin layer were investigated. The extent of the density was controlled by the evaporation, time, and when the evaporation time was increased from 0 min to 4 min, the permeation flux was decreased, the separation factor was increased. Also, the pervaporation behaviors of the polyetherimide membranes modified with sodium hydroxide solution, as the modification time of dense skin layer increased, the selectivity increased, and the permeation flux decreased. The morphology change identified by SEM shows that the density of dense skin layer tends to increase with increasing modification time, this result is consistent with above observations.

  • Modified starches were used as additives to make tomato ketchup, and their effects on the rheological properties, serum separation and sensory characteristics of the tomato ketchup were examined. The magnitudes of the yield stress and the consistency index of the tomato ketchup with the additives, regarded as a Herschel-Bulkley fluid, were found to be in the order of ADA(acetylated distarch adipate)>SA(starch acetate) >HDP(hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate)>RCS(raw corn starch)>NS(no starch). The flow behavior indices of SA added ketchup and HDP added one were nearly constant regardless of the additive concentrations, whereas those of ADA and RCS increased with the additive concentration. In the serum separation test centrifugation, the ADA added ketchup showed the highest stability against separation, being fol-lowed by SA>HDP>RCS>NS. In the sensory evaluation, the magnitudes of the acceptance of the ketchup with the additives were as ADA(2%)>SA(2%)>RCS(2%)>NS>HDP(2%).

  • We have studied the phase separation and ordering phenomeon of InAlAs epilayers grown on InP substrate by LP-MOCVD with DCXRD, PL, and TEM. From the intensity and FWHM of DCXRD and PL, we observed that the structural and optical quality of InAlAs epilayers were improved as growth temperature increased. The band-gap reduction due to phase separation and ordering is 291, 246, and 28 meV in the InAlAs epilayers grown at $565^{\circ}C$, $615^{\circ}C$, and $700^{\circ}C$, respectively, and shows the same from the InAlAs epilayer town at 5$65^{\circ}C$ in which the HRTEM micrograph showed the lattice fringe between InAs-rich and AlAs-rich regions was tilted by $2^{\circ}$ due to composition difference. However the maximum degree of ordering by intensity of extra spots was obtained at medium growth temperature. The annealing experiment by RTA of sample grown at $565^{\circ}$ shows a maximum band-gap shift of 78eV at $880^{\circ}$ for 3 min, and TEM shows that the origin of the blue shift of band-gap is the complete disappearance of ordering. Through annealing we can conclude that short time annealing affects only ordering and that most of the total band-gap reduction (~3/4) occurs by phase separation.

  • Inonotus obliquus mushroom, which is a fungus belonging to Hymenochaetaceae family, is known to grow on birth trees in colder northern climates and to be a fungal parasite that draws nutrients out of living trees rather than from the ground. For the separation of protein-bound polysaccharide (PBP) from the culture broth and mycelium of Inonotus obliquus, three well known extraction methods namely hot water, ultrasound and microwave were used. The best extraction conditions to separate the PBP (64.94 mg/g) from mycelium by microwave were found to be for 1 hour and $150^{\circ}C$. The possibility for concentration of extracted PBP solution by using membrane was also studied. The extracted PBP solution was concentrated effectively by using an ultrafiltration membrane and the molecular weight cut off (MWCO) is 30 KDa. It was observed that a concentration by the ultrafiltration membrane is essential not only for the development of clean separation technology but also for enhanced production of PBP. As a result, we have shown that PBP in the final concentrated solution showed approximately 10 times higher than that in the crude solution by application of the developed separation systems. The separation yield of PBP was about 89.79% by gel filtration of purification steps and the purified product was confirmed to be PBP by using FT-IR.

  • Asymmetric polyetherimide membrane were prepared by phase inversion method, and the effects of NaOH concentration and reaction time on the morphology change of the polyetherimide membranes were studied. The morphology of skin layers varied from dense structure to sphere structure with increasing concentration of modification solution. The thickness of dense layer increased with increasing reaction time. However, when either the concentration of modifying solution was very high or the reaction time was very long, the dense layers of the asymmetric membrane were disappeared. From these results, it was found that the surface morphology of the asymmetric polyetherimide membranes depended strongly on the modification conditions such as concentration of modification solution and reaction time. These results might be explained by the hydrolysis reaction of polyetherimide into polyamic acid by the NaOH solution.

  • The pervaporation separation of isopropanol/water mixture was carried out on a series of chemically cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) composite membranes. The membranes were prepared by casting three kinds of PVA solutions with varying concentrations of PVA and GA onto polyacrylonitrile (PAN) support followed by thermal cross linking. As the PVA concentration increased, the flux decreased but separation factor was increased. It was confirmed that the composite membrane coated with PVA-3 (98~99% hydrolyzed) at a concentration of 7 wt% PVA and 20 wt% glutaraldehyde (GA) exhibited a flux of $209g/m^2h$ and a separation factor of more than 100. The submerged module test was carried out with controlled feed tank temperature and IPA concentration of the feed solution. The continuous concentration of IPA solution was increased from 90% to 99% after 60 h.

  • Aromatic polyetherimide membranes were prepared by dry/wet phase inversion method and investigated regarding the pervaporation characteristic of water-alcohol mixtures by using the permselective property of imide group and the structure modification of skin layer of the membrane. The membrane selectivity increased with the reaction time of surface-modification, to some extent, and the density of top layer tends to increases with increasing the reaction time. In the case of dense membrane, the separation factor was 160 and 2000 for 90wt% ethanol mixture and 90wt% isopropanol solution, respectively, which implies that aromatic polyetherimide has a high permselectivity. The temperature dependence of permeation flux seems to follow an Arrhenius type at the temperature range of ($40^{\circ}C-70^{\circ}C$).

  • Water selective silica membranes were prepared fur use as membrane reactor for synthesis of dimethyl ether (DME) by methanol dehydration. Silica membranes formed on a Porous SUS tube by ultrasonic spray Pyrolysis (USP) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as precursor. The CVD-derived membranes formed higher level of trade-off line between water permeance and water/methanol selectivity than that of the USP-derived membranes. The membrane reactor possessing water permeance of $1.2\times10^{-7}\;mol\;{\cdot}\;m^{-2}\;{\cdot}\;S^{-1}\;{\cdot}\;Pa^{-1}$ and water/methanol selectivity of 10 exhibited increase in methanol conversion of about $20\%$ comparing to conventional reactor system. These findings led us to conclude that the dehydration membrane reactor simultaneously separating the water vapour produced in the reaction zone was effective in increasing the reaction conversion.
