  • The present study describes a new technique to extract the primary silicon from an Al-Si alloy melt using centrifugal force during its solidification. The primary silicon was separated from an Al-50 wt.%Si alloy by centrifugal force in the form of a foam, which facilitated subsequent acid leaching to extract the pure silicon due to its wide surface area. The foam recovery after centrifugal separation was decreased as centrifugal acceleration was increased. The final recovery after acid leaching became closer to the solid fraction of the alloy, which was calculated from the Al-Si binary phase diagram, with increasing centrifugal acceleration due to the effective removal of the attached Al on the foam. The purity of the primary silicon obtained by the centrifugal separation method was over 99.99%, with only aluminum being also present.

  • Comprehensive utilization of zinc smelting iron slag not only solves environmental problems but also creates huge economic benefits. This study was conducted on the enrichment and recovery of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ from zinc smelting iron slag by superconducting HGMS technology. Several variables such as slurry flow velocity, slag concentration, magnetic field intensity and the amount of dispersing agent were tested in magnetic separation. In the experiments, obtained optimal magnetic separation parameters were 1.60 T of magnetic flux intensity, 600 mL/min of slurry flow velocity of, 15 g/L of slag concentration of, 0.10 g/L of dispersing agent. Under this condition, the content of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ was increased from 86.22% to 94.39% that can approach the Chinese national standard requirements (A level) of iron oxide red. It was concluded that using superconducting HGMS technology was an effective method for the purification of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ from zinc smelting iron slag.

  • Herein, a series of g-C3N4 modified Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites using Bi2MoO6 and melamine as original materials are fabricated via sintering process. For presynthesis of Bi2MoO6 an ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal technique is researched. The structure and composition of the nanocomposites are characterized by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The improved photoelectrochemical properties are studied by photocurrent density, EIS, and amperometric i-t curve analysis. It is found that the structure of Bi2MoO6 nanoparticles remains intact, with good dispersion status. The as-prepared g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites (BMC 5-9) are selected and investigated by SEM analysis, which inhibits special morphology consisting of Bi2MoO6 nanoparticles and some g-C3N4 nanosheets. The introduction of small sized g-C3N4 nanosheets in sample BMC 9 is effective to improve the charge separation and transfer efficiency, resulting in enhancing of the photoelectric behavior of Bi2MoO6. The improved photoelectronic behavior of g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 may be attributed to enhanced charge separation efficiency, photocurrent stability, and fast electron transport pathways for some energy applications.

  • This study investigates store separation characteristics of an unmanned aerial vehicle having generic stealth configuration over unsteady flow of an internal bay. Free-drop wind tunnel tests are conducted to simulate bomb releases from an internal weapons bay while high-speed camera images are taken. The images are analyzed to examine the effects of flow velocity, angle of attack, flap deflection and the ejector force application on the store separation trajectories. For the free-drop wind tunnel tests, Froude Scaling is applied to match the dynamic similarity for the bomb model, and the ejector force is simulated by using small pneumatic cylinders. The results indicate that the test bomb model safely separates from the internal bay at the given test conditions and configurations. It is also observed that the effects of the flow velocity and ejector force application have greater impacts on the separation trajectories than those of angle of attack and flap deflection.

  • The study is to propose the optimal separation technique of heavy metals (Pb and Zn) contaminated in soil for improving the removal efficiency by various applicable techniques. The heavy metal contaminated soil samples near abandoned mine X-1 and X-2 were used for the study. Firstly, the wet classification process was shown more than 80% of removal efficiency for lead and zinc. Meanwhile, the magnetic separation process was shown low removal efficiency for lead and zincs because those heavy metals were non-magnetic materials. For the next step, the flotation separation process was shown approximately 24.4% of removal efficiency for zinc, while the gravity concentration process was shown approximately 57% of removal efficiency for lead, and 19.9% of removal efficiency for zinc, respectively. Therefore, zinc contaminated in soil would be effectively treated by the combination technique of the wet classification and the flotation technique. Meanwhile, lead contaminated in soil would be effectively treated by the combination technique of the wet classification process and the flotation process. Furthermore, the extraction of organic matter was shown more effective with aeration, 3% of hydrogen peroxide and 3% of lime such as calcium hydroxide.

  • A closed type crankcase ventilation system has been adopted to engines to prevent emission of blow-by gas to atmosphere. In the early closed type crankcase ventilation system, blow-by gas which contains engine lubricating oil is re-circulated into the intake system. The blow-by gas containing oil mist leads to increased harmful emissions and engine problems. To reduce loss of the engine oil, a highly-efficient oil separation device is required. Principle of a cyclone oil separator is to utilize centrifugal force in the separator and, therefore, oil separator designs depend on rotational flow which causes the centrifugal force. In this paper, flow characteristics and oil separation performances for cyclone type designs are calculated with CFD methodology. In the CFD model, oil particle was injected on a inlet surface with Rosin-Rammler distribution and uniform distribution. The major design parameters considered in the analysis model are inlet area, cone length and outlet depth of the oil separator. As results, reducing inlet area and increasing cone length increase oil separation performance. Changes in outlet depth could avoid interference between rotational flow and outlet flow in the cyclone oil separator.

  • The Scientific balloon is a flight system that could recover an entire platform at the end of the mission. The recovery takes place mainly in low-density populated areas, taking into account for the possible damage to the human life and public safety. In Republic of Korea, on the other hand, marine recovery should be considered due to the dense mountainous terrain and restrictions of the peninsula. In this operating environment, the envelope must be recovered because of severe marine pollution that may occur after the splashdown. Therefore, in this study, the separation device that consists of a location tracker and the waterproof system were developed. The device includes data transmission/reception, separation, and waterproof systems which are manufactured considering the environmental condition of the Korea. The performance of the device and the trajectory of the envelope were verified by conducting a separation test of a 20km platform at a target altitude and the recovery of the zero-pressure balloon.

  • In this study, a study on the performance and aging of explosive bolts stored for a long time among pyrotechnic mechanical devices(PMD) used as separation devices in the defense field is conducted. For this, explosive bolts that had been installed in the weapon system for about 10 years are secured. Performance and life extension test procedures are established based on the AIAA Standard and MIL-STD. Before performance evaluation, non-functional tests are performed to check whether external changes or failures occurred. Next, circuit inspection and X-ray tests are conducted to check the failure in internal circuits and structures. After that, performance test is carried out to confirm the operation of the samples that passed the non-functional test. Through this test, separation of bolt and separation time are measured, and some samples are tested after a high temperature storage test to confirm the remaining life and the possibility of extension. Finally, the remaining life and reliability are predicted based on the results of the test and the Arrhenius model to identify remaining shelf life and reliability depend on time.

  • This study was carried out to reduce the problem during distillation process, which separate U, TRU (TRans Uranium) metal electro deposit, Cd and LiCl-KCl eutectic salt generating from LCC (Liquid Cadmium Cathode) electro winning process. The cadmium recovering apparatus was manufactured to separate for each metal using solid-liquid separation method. The apparatus consists of the first sieve for the separation of U and TRU metal electrodeposit, the second sieve for the separation of LiCl-KCl eutectic salt, cadmium collection basket, and a heating furnace. In addition, the size of each sieve is 2 mm to 3 mm. In this experiment, a metal wire was employed to replace TRU metal electrodeposit and U, which exist actually in a LCC crucible. In the solid state, The LiCl-KCl is separated at 340℃ at which the solid and the liquid of the remaining cadmium and LiCl-KCl eutectic salt coexists in each, after the metal wire separated at 500℃. As a result, it seems that it would be beneficial to set the processing condition in the distillation process with the additional treatment process of cadmium and LiCl-KCl eutectic salt.

  • Hydrogen isotopes can be categorized into light hydrogen, heavy hydrogen, and tritium based on the number of neutrons, each of which is used in specific fields. Specifically, deuterium is of interest in the electronics industry, nuclear energy industry, analytical technology industry, pharmaceutical industry, and telecommunications industry. Conventional methods such as cold distillation, thermal cycling absorption processes, Girdler sulfide processes, and water electrolysis have their own advantages and disadvantages, leading to the need for alternative technologies with high separation and energy efficiency. In this context, membrane-based hydrogen isotope separation is one of the promising solutions to reduce energy consumption. In this review, we will present the state-of-the-art in hydrogen isotope separation using membranes and their operating principles. The technology for separating hydrogen isotopes using membranes is just beginning to be conceptualized, and many challenges remain to be overcome. However, if achieved, the economic benefits are expected to be significant. We will discuss future research directions for this purpose.
