  • The PSA cycle was performed for the separation of binary gas mixture $H_2/Ar$ (80%/20%) using the six-step two-bed process. Adsorption equilibrium contains a LRC model for equilibrium adsorption isotherms and a LDF model for mass transfer. Aspen ADSIM, simulator was applied to predict the separation performance. The effect of cycle parameters such as feed rate, adsorption pressure and P/F ratio on the separation of hydrogen has been studied in experiment and simulation. In the results, maximize the recovery of hydrogen as a high purity was 13LPM feed flowrate, 120sec adsorption time, 11atm adsorption pressure and 0.1 P/F ratio in a cyclic steady-state come out since 10th cycle.

  • In this study, we synthesized polyimide with high carbon dioxide gas transport property using 2,2-bis(3,4-carboxylphenyl) hexafluoropropane, 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine and poly(ethylene glycol) bis(3-aminopropyl) terminated and then we calculated solubility parameter of synthesized polymer and non-solvent phase separation coefficient to determine proper solvent for preparation of asymmetric membrane, also we measured the viscosity of the polymer solution to check polymer contents in membrane solution and prepare asymmetric membrane with $LiNO_3$ additives. The morphology and gas separation property of membrane prepared by phase separation method was confirmed using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microsope and the single gas permeation measurement apparatus. We confirmed that the carbon dioxide permeance of the membrane increased and the selectivity showed little change with decreasing of the volatile solvent contents.

  • Silver species other than the silver ion were formed by UV irradiation on polymer electrolyte membranes containing silver salts and their effect on complexation behavior between the silver and olefin was investigated through the separation performance of olefin/paraffin mixtures. The ideal propylene/propane separation factor reached 350 and the separation coefficient was ca.15 due to the high loading amount of silver ions into poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (POZ) without UV irradiation. On UV irradiation either in air or under nitrogen, the silver-POZ membranes became yellow-brown initially due to the formation of colloidal silver particles, and finally black and metal-like luster. Even when Ag$^{+}$ was converted, to some extent, to Ag$^{\circ}$ by UV irradiation in air at the early stage, the separation coefficient of olefin/paraffin mixtures was maintained. This suggests that silver species other than the silver ion is active for olefin carrier for facilitated transport. Meanwhile the steady decrease of the separation coefficient was observed in the silver/POZ membranes irradiated under $N_2$. It is suggested that the reduction of silver ions in POZ goes through a different photoreduction mechanism with UV irradiation depending on the environment.t.

  • Recently, STS 301L joints of side panels to frames for stainless steel rolling stock have been made out by using existing welding methods including Resistance Spot Welding, Laser Welding and Arc Welding. Most of the processes were jointed by spot welding because it is faster at welding and comparatively less expensive for investment in welding facilities than other methods. During spot welding, however, indentation of the metal surface was made due to pressure and melting property of welding. Moreover, since the melting metal was forced to periphery of the plate as indentation was made, sheet separation, which cracked apart between jointed sheets, was carried out. A slight deformation which resulted from sheet separation deteriorated the emotional quality of railway vehicles. This paper suggests that by processing conventional spot electrode tip appropriately, melting metal is able to push up around the processed part (Hollow Spot Electrode Tip) and prevent from being dislodged from first place to periphery. Consequently, sheet separation is remarkably decreased. Also, the emotional quality of appearance of stainless steel rolling stock is enhanced considerably.

  • Explosive bolts are one of pyrotechnic release devices, which are highly reliable and efficient for a built-in release. Among them, ridge-cut explosive bolts which utilize shock wave generated by detonation to separate bolt body produce minimal fragments, little swelling and clean breaks. In this study, separation phenomena of ridge-cut explosive bolts or ridge-cut mechanism are computationally analyzed using Hydrocodes. To analyze separation mechanism of ridge-cut explosive bolts, fluid-structure interactions with complex material modeling are essential. For modeling of high explosives (RDX and PETN), Euler elements with Jones-Wilkins-Lee E.O.S. are utilized. For Lagrange elements of bolt body structures, shock E.O.S., Johnson-Cook strength model, and principal stress failure criteria are used. From the computational analysis of the author's explosive bolt model, computational analysis framework is verified and perfected with tuned failure criteria. Practical design improvements are also suggested based on a parametric study. Some design parameters, such as explosive weights, ridge angle, and ridge position, are chosen that might affect the separation reliability; and analysis is carried out for several designs. The results of this study provide useful information to avoid unnecessary separation experiments related with design parameters.

  • The flux behavior in the separation of equimolar bovine serum albumin (BSA) and bovine hemoglobin (HB) in aqueous solutions by cross-flow ultrafiltration (UF) was investigated, in which polyacylonitrile membrane with a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 100 kDa was used. BSA and HB have comparable molar mass (67,000 vs. 68,000) but different isoelectric points (4.7 vs. 7.1). The effects of process variables including solution pH (6.5, 7.1, and 7.5), total protein concentration (1.48 and 7.40 ${\mu}M$), transmembrane pressure (69, 207, and 345 kPa), and solution ionic strength (with or without 0.01 M NaCl) on the separation were examined. It was shown that the ionic strength had a negligible effect on separation performance under the conditions studied. Although BSA and HB are not rigid bodies, the flux decline in the present cross-flow UF did not result from the mechanism of cake filtration with compression. In this regard, the specific cake resistance when pseudo steady-state was reached was evaluated and discussed.

  • Recently molybdenum alloys have been introduced as accident tolerating materials for cladding of fuel rods. Molybdenum element has seven stable isotopes with different neutron absorption cross section used in various fields, including nuclear physics and radioisotope production. This study presents separation approaches for all intermediate isotopes of molybdenum element by squared-off cascades using a newly developed numerical code with Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) optimization algorithm. The parameters of cascade including feed flow rate, feed entry stage, cascade cut, input feed flow rate to gas centrifuges (GCs), and cut of the first stage are optimized to maximize both isotope recovery and cascade capacity. The squared off and squared cascades are studied, and the efficiencies are compared. The results obtained from the optimization showed that for the selected squared off cascade, Mo94 in four separation steps, Mo95 in five steps, Mo96 in six steps, Mo97 in seven steps, and Mo98 in two steps are separated to the desired concentrations. The highest recovery factor is obtained 63% for Mo94 separation and lowest recovery factor is found 45% for Mo95.

  • Recently, many researches have been done to solve the challenging problem of Blind Source Separation (BSS) problems in the underdetermined cases, and the “Two-step” method is widely used, which estimates the mixing matrix first and then extracts the sources. To estimate the mixing matrix, conventional algorithms such as Single-Source-Points (SSPs) detection only exploits the sparsity of original signals. This paper proposes a new underdetermined mixing matrix estimation method for time-delayed mixtures based on the receiver prior exploitation. The prior information is extracted from the specific structure of the complex-valued mixing matrix, which is used to derive a special criterion to determine the SSPs. Moreover, after selecting the SSPs, Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) is used to automaticly cluster, suppress, and estimate all the elements of mixing matrix. Finally, a convex-model based subspace method is applied for signal separation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can estimate the mixing matrix and extract the original source signals with higher accuracy especially in low SNR environments, and does not need the number of sources before hand, which is more reliable in the real non-cooperative environment.

  • In this study, chemical demulsification and electrical treatment methods were investigated for improving the efficiency of water separation from a water/bitumen emulsion. Two types of motor oils (GS Caltex, Deluxe Gold V 7.5 W/30 and, Hyundai gear oil 85 W/140) were used as model oils in basic experiments to investigate the effects of a demulsifier on water/oil emulsion separation. Chemical demulsifiers showing good water separation performance were then used in asphalt emulsion and bitumen emulsion separation trials. Maleic anhydride and e-caprolactam were shown to be good oil soluble demulsifiers and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylic acid were effective as water soluble demulsifiers. Based on the results obtained in basic experiments, these four demulsifiers were used in further asphalt emulsion experiments. The oil soluble demulsifiers showed higher water separation efficiencies than the water soluble demulsifiers. To investigate the water separation efficiency using a combined chemical and electrical treatment method, the water/bitumen emulsion was separated with the electrical oil treatment apparatus after a chemical demulsifier had been added to it.
