  • Microplastics are recognized as critical and serious environmental problem in worldwide. Plastics are inexpensive, lightweight, excellent in processability, and various in material-specific properties. Along industrial development, the production and disposal amount of plastics are also rapidly increasing. In particular, abundant plastic wastes are eventually disposed into marine environment with harmful impacts on the ecosystem. Therefore, lots of relevant studies were recently progressed in various fields. However, many studies are being just conducted due to its difficulty in applying a general treatment method for those small particle sizes and their various characteristics. In the meantime, lots of researches are being conducted on applying methods using physical properties such as specific gravity, magnetic, and electrostatic separation, which are beneficiation processes of minerals. However, since it is still in the laboratory stage, the development of larger scale separation technology for efficient treatment is urgent.

  • Separation and recovery of valuable metals such as zinc, nickel or tin from copper alloy dross has recently attracted from the viewpoints of environmental protection and resource recycling. In this report, preliminary study on concentration and separation of tin from copper alloy dross using selective dissolution method was performed. The tin in the copper alloy dross did not dissolve in the nitric acid solution which could allow the concentration and separation of the tin from the copper alloy dross. Precipitation of tin as $H_2SnO_3$ (metastannic acid) occurred in the solution and transformed to tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) after drying process. The dried sample was heat-treated at low temperature and its phase characteristics, surface morphology and chemical composition were investigated.

  • The separation performance of zigzag air classifier with angle of 90 degrees was studied using narrow size fractions of thin square samples and granular samples. The simulation results of air velocity inside the classifier indicated that the zigzag geometry induces a new pattern consisting of an upward flow and a circulation flow, Experimental results showed that overflow product recovery was described as an integral calculus of normal distribution as a function of dimensionless air velocity ( $V_{A}$ $V_{A50}$), where $V_{A}$ is superficial air velocity and $V_{A50}$ is the $V_{A}$ at the fifty percent recovery. The $V_{A}$ values were predicted using the equations derived from dynamics for a particle dropping in air. A monitoring system that utilizes changes in acoustic signals emitted during the process of air classification was developed to separate PET with desired recovery or grade. The technical feasibility of the on-line monitoring of the PET recovery and grade was demonstrated by measuring relative energy of the signals.signals.als.

  • The solvent separation step in the conventional method for quantitative analysis of ginsenosides was substituted by purification through a small reverse-phase $C_18$-column resulting in the decrease of analysis time by one fourth. New method showed high recovery of total ginsenosides but low recovery in protopanaxatriol-ginsenosides. Sugars did not affect the recovery by the amount in usual root sample. Coefficient of variation in recovery of ginsenosides was lower in the rapid minicolumn method. Optimum load of ginsenosides to minicolumn was 10 to 15 mg. The rapid minicolumn method showed highly significant correlation with the solvent separation method for dried root and red ginseng. For the rapid minicolumn method a small acryl device was used for the simultaneous extraction of 8 samples. This method appeared to be beneficial in cost and for the health of analyst.

  • The capacitive current breaking capability as well as the short circuit current breaking capability is a very important factor in the performance of a circuit breaker. The dielectric recovery capability between poles should be considered in the desist of a circuit breaker because approximately two times of the maximum power system voltage might be applied between poles after the capacitive current be interrupted. The electric field and flow field analyses were utilized in the calculation of dielectric recovery characteristics between poles of 800kV model interrupter. The results show that the separation between moving main contact and moving arcing contact will affect to decrease significantly the electric field strength of a moving arcing contact and an insulation cover, to increase slightly the electric field strength of a fixed arcing contact and to decrease consequently the dielectric recovery capability between poles of the interrupter.

  • This study is aimed to separate propylene and propane using membrane process instead of NCC(Naphtha Cracking Center) $C_3$ splitter. Membrane process is a low energy consumption and eco-friendly process while $C_3$ splitter requires high energy consumption in petrochemical processes. In this study, high performance facilitated transport membrane (FTM) is used for propylene/propane separation. FTM module was prepared on top of porous polyetherimide hollow fiber using PVP/$AgBF_4$/TCNQ. We developed simulation program predicting the membrane separation properties under operation conditions. Separation properties of FTM module for propylene and propane were obtained from the simulation program based on the pure gas permeation data. Based on these results, it is predicted that an one-stage membrane process provides 99.5% of propylene at permeate side from a binary gas mixture of 95/5 vol% $C_3H_6$ / vol% $C_3H_8$ supplied as a feed gas.

  • The new movement towards green chemistry and renewable feedstocks makes microbial production of chemicals more competitive. Among the numerous chemicals, organic acids are more attractive targets for process development efforts in the renewable-based biorefinery industry. However, most of the production costs in microbial processes are higher than that in chemical processes, among which over 60% are generated by separation processes. Therefore, the research of separation and purification processes is important for a promising biorefinery industry. This review highlights the progress of recovery processes in the separation and purification of organic acids, including their advantages and disadvantages, current situation, and future prospects in terms of recovery yields and industrial application.

  • The purpose of this study is to separate nitrocellulose from 175 mm ammunition propellant by environmentally responsible recovery method. Recovery of nitrocellulose from obsolete ammunition is much more desirable than destruction since it can be reused in the several purpose. In spite of durable demilitarization of obsolete ammunition, the current holding amount of obsolete ammunition is gradually increasing and accumulated. The existing demilitarization methods, such as incineration and priming are strictly restricted for the noise, dust, oscillation and air and soil pollution. This study is focused on the separation of nitrocellulose by environmentally responsible recovery method by the solubility difference of nitrocellulose in nonpolar solvent. The purity of an extracted nitrocellulose was analysed by IR and TLC method and was clarified as very high.
