The Seoguipo Formation occurs only in a small exposure along the coast of the Seoguipo City, but in the subsurface, underlies tile western part of the Bugcheon-Pyoseon Line in the northeastern part of tile island. The Bugcheon-Pyoseon Line is presumed to be a facies boundary that reflects tile distribution of hyaloclastites resulted from submarine volcanic activity. The Seoguipo Formation is distributed in the subsurface along the part which is lower than 400m in average altitude, and occurs at El. -5.76∼-46.63m in tile southern area, El. -41.89∼-57.97m in the western area, El. -13.15∼-50.59m in the northern area. Therefore, the southern area was uplifted after the deposition of the Seoguipo Formation. In the subsurface, the vertical depth of the volcanic rocks of the Cheju Volcanic Edifice is El. -40.6m in the southern area, El. -111.3m in the western area, El. -81.5m in the northern area and El. -134.7m in the eastern area. The unconsolidated U Formation, which is, overlying the basement and about 70∼250m thickness underlies the whole island. There is a positive correlation between tile groundwater level and the depth of the subsurface distribution of the Seoguipo Formation. Consequently, it is conformed that the subsurface distribution of the Seoguipo Formation plays important role for controlling the characteristics of the reservoir of tile groundwater in Cheju Island.

Twenty species of calcareous nannofossils belonging to 11 genera are identified from the Seoguipo Formation in Cheju island, Korea. On the basis of the marker species, the Seoguipo Formation is biostratigraphically assigned to the Pseudoemiliania lacunosa Zone (NNl9), which corresponds to the combined zones of Emiliania annula - Emiliania ovata (CN13a-CN14a) of latest Pliocene and Early Pleistocene. Generally, cold-water species is dominant in the lower part, whereas warm-water one in the upper part. This is interpreted the palaeoceanographic condition has changed from cooling to warm phase. The change in floral composition and abundance of specific species allows the recognition of 4 ecostaratigraphic units in the Seoguipo Formation and the migration of oceanographic frontal boundary. According to nannofossil distribution in the study area, the position of an oceanographic boundary between warmer water and cooler water appeared to have oscillated north-south over the Korea Strait and Cheju island in response to glacial and interglacial cycles. The geologic time of the interpreted paleoceanographical changes determined by nannofossil biochronology is well agreed with the results obtained from the Japan Sea (East Sea) and Japan-Sea side of Japan.

The environmental tracers of $^3$H and NO$_3$ were investigated in terms of vertical connections between basaltic aquifers and underlying sedimentary formations of Seoguipo formation that is not found in eastern coastal area and U formation. In western coastal area, $^3$H shows values less than 0.5TU In the wells completed in Seoguipo formation whereas it is greater than 2TU in other area. For the wells in western area, NO$_3$ concentrations are below background level though the nearby land uses are mainly agricultural. The groundwater heads are much lower in eastern coastal area than western area in spite that recharge rate of eastern area is 1.7 times higher than that of western area. The basaltic aquifer is thicker by 70m in eastern coastal area than in western coastal area, which is insufficient to explain much lower groundwater heads in eastern area. These hydrogeological characteristics suggest that for the basaltic aquifers, the Seoguipo formation acts as a lower boundary which could limit downward groundwater flow in basaltic aquifers whereas the U formation is unlikely.
Stable isotopic and elemental compositions were analyzed for well- preserved calcareous skeletons (gastropods, pectenids, brachiopods, a scaphopod, and other bivalves) of the Pleistocene Seoguipo Formation from Cheju Island, Korea. Mineralogically and texturally, aragonitic and calcitic fossils still retain their original mineralogy and microstructure. High $\delta$$\^$18/O and $\delta$$\^$13/C contents indicate that the shells have not been altered by the post-burial diagenesis. Also, this is supported by high Na and Sr contents as well as low Mn and Fe compositions of the shells. Oxygen isotopic compositions of the well preserved fossils show that the organisms had lived under the lower paleotemperature or within the isotopically enriched paleo-seawater during the deposition of the Seoguipo Formation. This result strongly implies that the Seoguipo Formation was deposited during a glacial period. The paleotemperature variation throughout the sequence during the deposition of the Sewguipo Formation was negligible.
Paleomagnetic and geological studies of volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Jeju Island have been carried out to determine the position of virtual geomagnetic pole(VGP), and to estimate the geological sequence and their age. As a result of paleomagnetic studies, the reversal polarities are measured in the Sanbangsan trachyte and Hwasun formation, and the normal are the rest. In case of normal polarity, the mean values of declination and inclination are $2.3^{\circ}$ and $48.4^{\circ}$, respectively, and the average value of VGP is $85.4^{\circ}N$ and $79.9^{\circ}W$. The locations of VGP's are coincident with those obtained from world-wide Plio-Pleistocene rocks. The Hwasun formation and Seongsan formation which have been known to be sedimented in the similar time in the 2nd-stage of volcanic eruption, possess reversal and normal polarities, respectively. This fact brings about the result that two formations should be separated in a sense of geological sequence. Consequently, the geological sequence of the 2nd-stage of volcanic eruption is Pyoseonri basalt-Seoguipo hawaiite-Hwasun formation-Seongsan formation-Jungmun hawaiite-Sanbangsan trachyte. Referring to the paleomagnetic studies and the previous and present geological studies, Seoguipo formation corresponds to the Gauss normal epoch, the 2nd-stage of volcanic eruption to Matuyama reversed epoch, and the 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-stages to Brunhes normal epoch. Therefore, the Seoguipo formation is mostly sedimented during late Pliocene and/or presumably extended to the early Pleistocene. The rocks of the 2nd- to 5th-stage are formed later than this.
We have performed the CSAMT survey to examine the geoelectrical structure and groundwater distribution for two survey lines across the south-eastern region of Jeju Island. Three kinds of 1-D inversion techniques were employed taking account of the geological situation around the observation sites, and their inversion results were concurrently compared and analyzed to improve the reliability of interpretation. The resultant inverted resistivity structures reveals the three-layered structure, which is composed of the layers with a high-low-lower resistivity from the surface downward. Through the comparison of the inverted resistivity model and core log of deep borehole nearby observation sites, the lithology of each inverted layer was inferred. The first layer and second layer corresponded to the basaltic layer with a thickness of $100{\sim}250m$, and the third layer to the Seoguipo Formation and the U Formation; the thickness of the Seoguipo Formation could not be estimated due to the limitation of investigation depth and little resistivity difference between both Formations. Nevertheless, the Seoguipo Formation, which is strongly associated with the groundwater system in the south-eastern region of Jeju Island, showed the conspicuous spatial continuity from the middle mountain area to coastal area.
Zeolites were formed by the alteration of volcanic glass in the volcaniclastics including tuff cone/rings and subsurface Seoguipo Formation, Jeju Island. Phillipsite and analcime were identified by X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis. Si/(Si+Al) atom ratios of analcime and phillipsite were similar to that of parent basaltic glass. In comparison with the simple chemistry of analcime, phillipsite showed a range of cavity cation compositions. Na is the major cavity cations of phillipsite in the Dangsanbong and Yongmeori tuffs bearing analcime, while K and Ca in core samples of Seoguipo Formation. Microtextural analysis by scanning electron microscope showed a general sequence that early phillipsite encrustification of pores was followed by later analcime infilling. Zeolites are abundant in the older tuff cone/rings but nearly absent in the younger ones.

Jeju Island is mainly composed of basaltic lava flows and subordinate amounts of volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks. Jeju Province operates the monitoring wells for seawater intrusion problems around Jeju Island to evaluate of groundwater resources in coastal area. Various surveys and monitoring have been performed in boreholes, and also conventional geophysical well loggings conducted to identify basalt sequences and assess seawater intrusion problems. Various conventional geophysical well logs, including radioactive logs, electrical log, caliper log, and temperature and conductivity log and heat-pulse flowmeter log were obtained in 29 boreholes. The results of geophysical well loggings for saturated rocks are interesting and consistent. Natural gamma logs are useful in basalt sequences to sedimentary interbeds, unconsolidated U formation, and seoguipo formation with higher natural gamma log regardless of saturated or unsaturated basalts. Neutron logs are very effective to discriminate among individual lava flows, flow breaks, and sedimentary interbeds in saturated formation. In hyalocastite, porosity is high and resistivity is low, and we think that hyalocastite is a major pathway of fluid flow. In trachybasalt, porosity has a wide range and resistivity is high. In sedimentary interbeds, unconsolidated U formation and seoguipo formation, porosity is high and resistivity is low. The temperature logs in eastern area in Jeju are useful to interpret the hydrogeological unit and evaluate seawater intrusion in Suan area.

The environmental tracers tritium/helium-3 (3H/3He) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were investigated in ground water from Jeju Island, Korea, a basaltic volcanic island. The apparent 3H/3He and CFC-12 ages were in relatively good agreement in samples with low concentrations of terrigenic He. Ground water mixing was evaluated by comparing 3H and CFC-12 concentrations with mixing models, which distinguished old water with negligible 3H and CFC-12, young water with piston flow, and binary mixtures of the two end members. The ground water CFC-12 age is much older in water from wells completed in confined zones of the hydro-volcanic Seoguipo formation in coastal areas than in water from the basaltic aquifer. Comparison of major element concentrations in ground water with the CFC-12 age shows that nitrate contamination processes contribute more solutes in young water than are derived from water-rock interactions in non-contaminated old water. Chemical evolution of ground water resulting from silicate weathering in basaltic rocks reaches the zeolite-smectite phase boundary. The calcite saturation state of ground water increased with the CFC-12 apparent (piston flow) age. In agricultural areas, the temporal trend of nitrate concentration in ground water was consistent with the known history of chemical fertilizer use on Jeju Island, but the response of nitrate concentration in ground water to nitrogen inputs follows an approximate 10-year delay. Based on mass balance calculations, it was estimated that about 40% of the nitrogen applied by fertilizers reached the water table and contaminated ground water resources when the fertilizer use was at the highest level.
We report twenty data for early lavas erupted during the initial period of formation of Jeju Island on the basis of review on 539 data of whole-rock greochemistry and $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ age dating out of mainly core samples from 69 boreholes drilled in the lower land since 2001 and 66 outcrop sites. Out of 69 boreholes, the early lava flow units are identified from samples collected from Beophocheon (EL 235 m, 210 m deep), Donnaeko (EL 240 m, 230 deep), Donghong-S (EL 187 m, 340 m deep), 05Donghong (EL. 187.6 m, 340 m deep), Dosoon (EL 305 m, 287 m deep), Sangye (EL 230 m, 260 m deep), Mureung-1 (EL 10.2 m, 160 m deep), and Gapa (EL 17.5 m, 92 m deep), which are located in the southern and southwestern portion of Jeju Island. While, the well-known outcrops from Sanbangsan, Wolrabong, Wonmansa, and Kagsubawi are also reconfirmed. $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ age dating results of these lavas range from 1 Ma to 0.7 Ma, indicating that the data can be useful to constrain on age and geochemical characteristics of early lava effusion period in the formation of Jeju Island. Especially, samples with trachybasalt in composition collected from 143 m to 137 m, and from 135 m to 123 m below ground surface at 05Donghong hole have the oldest ages, $992\pm21$ Ka and $988\pm38$ Ka, respectively. This study suggests that in Jeju Island the first lava with trachybasalt in composition may have effused around 1 Ma ago, and the effusion style and chemical compositions of lavas must have changed to the formation of lava domes with trachyte-trachyandesite-basaltic trachyandesite and the eruption of lavas with alkali basalt and trachybasalt intermittently during the period from 0.9 Ma to 0.7 Ma ago. It also indicates that the initial lava flows below the ground are intercalated with or underlain by the Seoguipo Formation except for several exposed domal structure areas such as Sanbangsan and Kagsubawi, implying that the early lava effusion may have intermittently and sporadically occurred with nearby hydrovolcanism and sedimentation.
