  • This study aimed to develop a sensory feedback system which could measure force and temperature for the user of myoelectric prosthetic hands. The Sensory measurement module consisted of a force sensing resistor to measure forces and non-contact infrared temperature sensor. These sensors were attached on the fingertips of the myoelectric prosthetic hand. The module was validated by using standard weights corresponding to external force and a Peltier module. Sensory transmission module consisted of four vibration motors. Eight vibration patterns were generated by combining motion of each vibration motor and were dependent on kinds and/or magnitude. The module was verified by using standard weigts and water at varying temperatures. There were correlations of force and temperature between the sensory measurement module and standard weight and water. Additionally, exact vibration patterns were generated, indicating the efficacy of the sensory feedback system for the myoelectric prosthetic hand.

  • The purpose of this study is to generate cycling motion for FES (functional electrical stimulation) using knee muscles only. We investigated the possibility by simulation. The musculoskeletal model used in this simulation was simplified as 5-rigid links and 2 muscles (knee extensor and flexor). For the improvement of the present feedforward control in FES, we included feedback path in the control system. The control system was developed based on the biological neuronal system and was represented by three sub-systems. The first is a higher neuronal system that generates the motion command for each joint. The second is the lower neuronal system that divides the motion command to each muscle. And the third is a sensory feedback system corresponding to the somatic sensory system. Control system parameters were adjusted by a genetic algorithm (GA) based on the natural selection theory. GA searched the better parameters in terms of the cost function where the energy consumption, muscle force smoothness, and the cycling speed of each parameter set (individual) are evaluated. As a result, cycling was implemented using knee muscles only. The proposed control system based on the nervous system model worked well even with disturbances.

  • Appropriate physical position and balance means giving the least stress and the most useful biomechanically to the body. As this fails, one would have functional recovery problem regardless of disability. There reported better effective on Dynamic training rather than Static training for a proper recovery of physical position, and additionally required Sensory Feedback. Those who have disability of balance, especially Central Nervous System lesion should he provided with variety of Sensory Feedback, and also Dynamic Balance training used by is quite effective.

  • Virtual reality (VR) opened the possibility of moving beyond the 2-D world of conventional desktop systems to an immersive, multi-sensory environment generated by computer graphics. Haptic feedback (Haptics) is now starting to get recognition and use in intensive applications for manipulation, while smell and taste feedback are at the stage of early research. This paper reviews some current works on increased haptic feedback augmentation in virtual reality applications.

  • Conditions are discussed for operating a dissymmetric human master-small (or micro) slave system in best (large position gain-small velocity gain) conditions allowing higher operator dexterity when real effects (joint compliance, link flexion delay and transmission distortion) are taken into account. It is shown that position PD feedback law advantage for ideal case no longer holds, and that more complicated feedback law depending on real effects has to be implemented with adapted transmission line. Drawback is slowdown of master slave interaction, suggesting to use more advanced predictive methods for the master and more intelligent control law for the slave.

  • We develope a assistant system of foot pressure distribution for improvement gait Pattern, adapted working speed, and minimitation of muscle fatigue of the sensory feedback type FES system(SEFES). This measurement system consist of mat type pressure sensor with piezo electric films. The pressure data signal multiflexed input scanning method processed A/D conversion after two step amplify and integrate. Matrix sensor interface to PC for pseudo color display by level of Pressure distribution data. This measurement system clinically evaluated in hemiplegic patients. It has produced acceptable results with optimal location of the food sensor's pressure point and avoid the muscle fatigue.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effects of sensory feedback training of the ankle with visuoperceptual stimulation on static balance and gait functions in patients with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis. Methods: This study included 16 patients with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis. The subjects were randomly assigned toeither the experimental group (EG) or the control group (CG), with 8 subjects in each group. All the subjects received a routine physical therapy. The EG subjects received a 30-min sensory feedback training for the foot and ankle with visuoperceptual stimulation by using Tetrax Portable Multiple System. This training was conducted 3 times a week for 4 weeks. The scores of balance ability, timed up and go (TUG), and dynamic gait index (DGI) were assessed before and after the intervention. Results: In the EG, the scores of static balance, TUG, and DGI obtained afterthe intervention significantly differed from those obtained before the intervention (p<0.05). Further, in the EG, a significant difference was noted in the rate of change of all the variables when compared with those of the CG (p<0.05). However, in the CG, post-intervention score were only significantly different for DGI. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that the sensory feedback training with visuoperceptual stimulation improves balance and gait functions of patients with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis. Further studies are needed to generalize the results of this study.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of changes in foot cutaneous sensation on plantar pressure distribution during gait. Methods: Sixteen healthy young subjects participated in this experiment. All subjects performed two trials of walking under three somatosensory conditions induced by a normal facilitatory insole that provides increased plantar sensory stimulation, and application of lidocaine cream to the plantar surface of the foot to reduce the sensitivity of the soles. Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments were used for evaluation of reduced plantar sensation. The Pedar system was used for measurement of pressure distribution at the plantar surface of the foot. Results: Pressure in the lateral midfoot area showed an increase with increasing and decreasing sensory inputs. When sensory input was increased, plantar pressure showed a decrease in the forefoot area. When sensory input was decreased, plantar pressure showed an increase in the lateral forefoot area and a decrease in the hallux area. Conclusion: By altering sensory feedback, plantar pressure distribution is changed during gait. Plantar cutaneous afferents play an important role in plantar distribution.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effectives of a virtual bicycle system in improving the ability of equilibrium sense of normal healthy adults. Experiments were performed to find the factors related to the training of equilibrium sense. The subjects consisted of young and elderly people and the group of young people was compared against the group of elderly people. We investigated three different running modes of virtual bicycle system with two successive sets in total. W measured the parameters related to the running time, the velocity, the weight movement, the degree of the deviation from the road, and the location of the center of pressure (COP). The results showed that the running capability of the elderly became much better after repeated training. In addition, it was found out that the ability to control postural balance and the capability of equilibrium sensory were improved with the presentation of the visual feedback information of the distribution of weight. We also found that the running time and the running velocity reduced when there was no visual feedback information. From the results, our newly developed bicycle system seems to be effective in the diagnosis of equilibrium sense as well as in the improvement of the sense of sight, and vestibular function of the elderly in the field of rehabilitation training.

  • This paper describes the quantitative analysis on the improvement of equilibrium sensory using virtual bicycle system. We have used a virtual bicycle system that combines virtual reality technology with a bicycle. In this experiment, 10 subjects were tested to investigate the influencing factors on equilibrium sensory. Straight road and curved road driving at several factors including cycling time, number of times of path deviation, and center of pressure(COP) were extracted and evaluated to quantify the extent of control. Also, To improve the effect of balance training, we investigated the usefulness of virtual feedback information by weight shift. The result showed that the system could be effective for equilibrium sensory rehabilitation training device. The analysis method might also have wider applicability to the rehabilitation field.
