Quorum-based Key Management Scheme in Wireless Sensor Networks

  • To ensure the security of wireless sensor networks, it is important to have a robust key management scheme. In this paper, we propose a Quorum-based key management scheme. A specific sensor, called as key distribution server (KDS), generates a key matrix and establishes a quorum system from the key matrix. The quorum system is a set system of subsets that the intersection of any two subsets is non-empty. In our scheme, each sensor is assigned a subset of the quorum system as its pre-distributed keys. Whenever any two sensors need a shared key, they exchange their IDs, and then each sensor by itself finds a common key from its assigned subset. A shared key is then generated by the two sensors individually based on the common key. By our scheme, no key is needed to be refreshed as a sensor leaves the network. Upon a sensor joining the network, the KDS broadcasts a message containing the joining sensor ID. After receiving the broadcast message, each sensor updates the key which is in common with the new joining one. Only XOR and hash operations are required to be executed during key update process, and each sensor needs to update one key only. Furthermore, if multiple sensors would like to have a secure group communication, the KDS broadcasts a message containing the partial information of a group key, and then each sensor in the group by itself is able to restore the group key by using the secret sharing technique without cooperating with other sensors in the group.

  • As the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and big data have received a lot of attention as key growth engines in the era of the fourth industrial revolution, data acquisition and utilization in mobile, automotive, robotics, manufacturing, agriculture, health care and national defense are becoming more important. Due to numerous data-based industrial changes, demand for sensor technologies is exploding, especially for intelligent sensor technologies that combine control, judgement, storage and communication functions with the sensors's own functions. Intelligent sensor technology can be defined as a convergence component technology that combines intelligent sensor units, intelligent algorithms, modules with signal processing circuits, and integrated plaform technologies. Intelligent sensor technology, which can be applied to variety of smart IT convergence services such as smart devices, smart homes, smart cars, smart factory, smart cities, and others, is evolving towards intelligent and convergence technologies that produce new high-value information through recognition, reasoning, and judgement based on artificial intelligence. As a result, development of intelligent sensor units is accelerating with strategies for miniaturization, low-power consumption and convergence, new form factor such as flexible and stretchable form, and integration of high-resolution sensor arrays. In the future, these intelligent sensor technologies will lead explosive sensor industries in the era of data-based artificial intelligence and will greatly contribute to enhancing nation's competitiveness in the global sensor market. In this report, we analyze and summarize the recent trends in intelligent sensor technologies, especially those for four core technologies.

Application of a Textile-based Inductive Sensor for the Vital Sign Monitoring

  • In this study, we developed a feasible structure of a textile-based inductive sensor using a machine embroidery method, and applied it to a non-contact type vital sign sensing device based on the principle of magnetic-induced conductivity. The mechanical heart activity signals acquired through the inductive sensor embroidered with conductive textile on fabric were compared with the Lead II ECG signals and with respiration signals, which were simultaneously measured in every case with five subjects. The analysis result showed that the locations of the R-peak in the ECG signal were highly associated with sharp peaks in the signals obtained through the textile-based inductive sensor (r=0.9681). Based on the results, we determined the feasibility of the developed textile-based inductive sensor as a measurement device for the heart rate and respiration characteristics.

  • 객체 감지 및 환경 센서 기반의 센서네트워크 환경에서 자원 활용 효율화를 위한 제어 시스템은 센서데이터 획득 및 송수신 기능과 서버에서의 분석을 기반으로 하는 능동적 제어 기능을 필요로 한다. 본 논문은 능동규칙 기반 이동에이전트 미들웨어를 이용하여 원격 데이터 센싱과 서버와의 Zigbee 기반 통신 및 서버의 데이터 분석 방법을 구현함으로써, 센서네트워크 환경에서 중앙 센서데이터 서버의 부하를 감소시키는 새로운 분산제어 프레임워크를 제안한다. 또한, 수요자의 요구 및 환경 변수들을 적용한 능동규칙 기반의 분산제어 방법을 이용한 절전 시스템 프로토타입을 구현하고, 이동에이전트 미들웨어 환경에서 실험과 평가를 통하여 유효성을 검증하였다. 제안 시스템은 센서네트워크 환경에서 분산된 객체들을 효율적으로 자율제어할 수 있는 시스템 프레임워크이며, 향후 스마트 전력 시스템을 위한 최적 전력제어 기반의 수요 반응 서비스 개발에 효과적 적용이 가능하다.

Development of a Nitrogen Application System for Nitrogen Deficiency in Corn

  • Purpose: Precision agriculture includes determining the right amount of nitrogen for a specific location in the field. This work focused on developing and validating a model using variable rate nitrogen application based on the estimated SPAD value from the ground-based image sensor. Methods: A variable rate N application based on the decision making system was performed using a sensor-based variable rate nitrogen application system. To validate the nitrogen application decision making system based on the SPAD values, the developed N recommendation was compared with another conventional N recommendation. Results: Sensor-based variable rate nitrogen application was performed. The nitrogen deficiency level was measured using the image sensor system. Then, a variable rate application was run using the decision model and real-ti me control. Conclusions: These results would be useful for nitrogen management of corn in the field. The developed nitrogen application decision making system worked well, when considering the SPAD value estimation.

이동 센서 네트워크에서 트리 기반의 배치 알고리즘 (Tree-based Deployment Algorithm in Mobile Sensor Networks)

  • Sensor deployment is an important issue in the mobile wireless sensor network. In this paper, we propose a deployment algorithm for mobile sensor network to spread out mobile sensor nodes widely as well as regularly. Since the proposed algorithm uses tree topology in deploying the sensor nodes, calculating power as well as spreading speed can be reduced compare to other deployment algorithms. The performance of the proposed algorithm is simulated using NS-2 simulator and demonstrated.

  • By adding Gyro sensor to support the steering wheel angle sensor, an improved functional DR solution is proposed in this paper The proposed angle data algorism is developed based on the steering wheel with Gyro sensor for DR. The Gyro sensor support the error of steering wheel sensor to improve the angle data for the DR algorism.

  • Sensor node's mobility brings new challenges to data dissemination in large sensor networks. Frequent location updates of sensor nodes can lead to both excessive drain of sensor's limited battery supply and increased collisions in wireless transmissions. Conventional studies for routing protocols in wireless sensor networks are not enough to cover energy consumption and migration of sensor nodes. This study proposes a dynamic routing protocol based on the SPIN considering energy consumption and the migration, and also shows the effectiveness of the proposed routing protocol.

TinyOS 기반의 센서 노드 제어 알고리즘 (Sensor Node Control Algorithm Based on TinyOS)

  • 최근에 대표적인 센서 노드 운영체계인 TinyOS를 이용하여 센서 네트워크를 개발하여 다양한 유비쿼터스 응용 서비스를 개발하고 있다. 이들 TinyOS 기반의 센서 네트워크에서는 상황 정보를 획득하기 위해 센서로부터 센싱된 정보의 전달과 수집을 집중적으로 수행한다. 이에 본 논문에서는 센서 노드의 전력 상태를 파악하여 이를 토대로 센서 노드를 수면, 활동, power off 모드로 전환하는 센서 노드 제어 알고리즘을 제시한다. 그리고 이 알고리즘을 토대로 센서 네트워크의 센서 노드, 싱크, 서버에서 센서 제어 모듈을 설계하고 구현한다. 이를 위하여 센서 노드의 센서 전력제어 모듈과, USN 서버의 센싱 데이터 수신 및 도시 모듈과 센서 제어 모듈을 설계하고 TinyOS와 자바 언어를 이용하여 구현한다. 이를 통하여 센서 노드의 전력 상태를 확인하여 데이터 수집이 어려울 경우 수면이나 power off 모드로 전환하여 전력 손실을 방지하고, 주변 환경이 정상적일 경우 활동 모드로 변경함으로써 효과적으로 센서 노드의 전력을 제어할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

  • In this paper, we propose a public key based security architecture for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The basic architecture comprises of two schemes; a key handshaking scheme based on simple linear operations for fast computation and an identity based cryptosystem which does not require any certificate authority. Our analysis shows that, the combined scheme ensures a good level of security and is very much suitable for the energy constrained trend of wireless sensor network.
