Multi-Agent System for Fault Tolerance in Wireless Sensor Networks

  • Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are self-organized networks that typically consist of thousands of low-cost, low-powered sensor nodes. The reliability and availability of WSNs can be affected by faults, including those from radio interference, battery exhaustion, hardware and software failures, communication link errors, malicious attacks, and so on. Thus, we propose a novel multi-agent fault tolerant system for wireless sensor networks. Since a major requirement of WSNs is to reduce energy consumption, we use multi-agent and mobile agent configurations to manage WSNs that provide energy-efficient services. Mobile agent architecture have inherent advantages in that they provide energy awareness, scalability, reliability, and extensibility. Our multi-agent system consists of a resource manager, a fault tolerance manager and a load balancing manager, and we also propose fault-tolerant protocols that use multi-agent and mobile agent setups.

A field-based Routing Scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks (무선 센서 네트워크를 위한 필드기반 경로 설정 방법)

  • The recent interest in sensor networks has led to a number of routing schemes that use the limited resources available at sensor nodes more efficiently. These schemes typically try to find the minimum energy path to optimize energy usage at a node. Some schemes, however, are prone to unbalance of the traffic and energy. To solve this problem, we propose a novel solution: a gradient-field approach which takes account of the minimum cost data delivery, energy consumption balancing, and traffic equalization. We also modify the backoff-based cost field setup algorithm to establish our gradient-field based sensor network and give the algorithm. Simulation results show that the overhead of routing establishment obtained by our algorithm is much less than the one obtained by Flooding. What's more, our approach guarantees the basic Quality of Service (QoS) without extra spending.

Mobile Robot Localization using Range Sensors: Consecutive Scanning and Cooperative Scanning

  • This paper presents an obstacle detection algorithm based on the consecutive and the cooperative range sensor scanning schemes. For a known environment, a mobile robot scans the surroundings using a range sensor that can rotate 3600°. The environment is rebuilt using nodes of two adjacent walls. The robot configuration is then estimated and an obstacle is detected by comparing characteristic points of the sensor readings. In order to extract edges from noisy and inaccurate sensor readings, a filtering algorithm is developed. For multiple robot localization, a cooperative scanning method with sensor range limit is developed. Both are verified with simulation and experiments.

  • In this paper, we introduce a canonical framework of the large-scaled web-based sensor gateway and practically implement it as the environment monitoring system. The system consists of a central management server, up to 250 local embedded subsystems and up to 250 sensor or actuator nodes for each subsystem. The node information is gathered periodically through a well-defined protocol on the sensor network and converted to the web contents and the SNMP MIB objects according to its data type. The MIB objects are well-defined and include system, network, sensor, actuator and alarm specific data classes. Because there is an increasing trend that a large number of sites are willing to adapt unmanned sensing and control, the developed system will play a key role to efficiently manage a large scale sensor networked system such as environment monitoring systems or countermeasure systems against disaster and calamities.

  • The security of the data exchanged between sensor nodes in IoT (Internet of Things) environment becomes increasing. In the conventional IEEE 802.15.4, the key for secure communication between the sensor node and the sensor node and the PAN Coordinator or the sensor node is assumed to be pre-shared in advance. Especially, there is another problem in that sensor node authentication is not considered during the association process. In this paper, we propose a security scheme that solves the problems of previously proposed protocols with the pre-shared key for all devices.

A Design of a Variable Interval Sensing Scheme for the Sensor Networks

  • In this paper, we propose a new energy efficient scheme which can prolong the life of sensor networks, it should be able to reduce the number of sensing. We use the concept of safe zone for manage the appropriate range of properties. We measure the distance between the sensed temperature value and the center of the zone, and calculate the next sensing interval based on this distance. We name our proposed scheme "VIS". To assess the performance of the proposed scheme the actual temperature data was collected using the sensor node. The algorithm was implemented through the programming and was evaluated in a variety of settings. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is to significantly reduce the number of sensing in terms of energy efficiency while having the ability to know the state of the sensor nodes periodically. Our VIS algorithm can be useful in applications which will require the ability of control to the temperature within a proper range.

  • Mobile Sensor Vehicles, nodes of Mobile Sensor Network, are navigating for a specific, maybe unknown, region. For the precise usage of MSN, MSV has to be able to do localization by integrating information through communication by each other. In addition, MSV should be localized with various sensors equipped. In this research, we propose a set of techniques that improve accuracy using human mimic by combining and exploiting the existing techniques such as Dead-Reckoning, Computer Vision and Received Signal Strength Identification.

  • In now days, Ubiquitous technology grow up, so the variety service are developed. Sensor networks purpose is collection information about environment and geographic. But sensor network has limit in power, cost and so on. There is much restriction. Some sensor networks purpose is monitoring environment. And there is some relation in sensing data. Sensor nodes sense information by periods. First sensing data correlate with next sensing data. At this point, this paper suggest power saving method. Some data are same, the other data are similar.

  • Wireless sensor network-related application system can perform functions such as environmental pollution monitoring, building control, home automation in future. In this paper, we present wireless sensor network based system for subway station in order to reduce the damage of the people and the subway station due to fire. Sensor nodes in this system can sense temperature, illumination, smoke, and human body in real time and detect the accident in the subway station. These real-time sensing and wireless networking minimize casualties and damage to property.

A Revised Timing-sync Protocol for Sensor Networks by a Polling Method

  • TPSN(Timing-sync Protocol for Sensor Networks), the representative of time synchronization protocol for WSN(wireless sensor networks), was developed to provide higher synchronization accuracy and energy efficiency. So, TPSN's approach has been referenced by so many other WSN synchronization schemes till now. However, TPSN has a collision problem due to simultaneous transmission among competing nodes, which causes more network convergence delay for a network-wide synchronization. A Polling-based scheme for TPSN is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme not only shortens network-wide synchronization time of TPSN, but also reduce collision traffic which lead to needless power consumption. The proposed scheme's performance has been evaluated and compared with an original scheme by simulation. The results are shown to be better than the original algorithm used in TPSN.
