  • Improvements in wireless sensor network (WSN) technology have resulted in a large number of applications. WSNs have been mainly used for monitoring applications, but they are also applicable to target tracking, health care, and monitoring with multimedia data. Nodes are generally deployed in environments where the exhausted batteries of sensor nodes are difficult to charge or replace. The primary goal of communication protocols in WSNs is to maximize energy efficiency in order to prolong network lifetime. In this paper, various medium access control (MAC) protocols for synchronous/asynchronous and single/multi-channel WSNs are investigated. Single-channel MAC protocols are categorized into synchronous and asynchronous approaches, and the advantages and disadvantages of each protocol are presented. The different features required in multi-channel WSNs compared to single-channel WSNs are also investigated, and surveys on multi-channel MAC protocols proposed for WSNs are provided. Then, existing broadcast schemes in such MAC protocols and efficient multi-hop broadcast protocols proposed for WSNs are provided. The limitations and challenges in many communication protocols according to this survey are pointed out, which will help future researches on the design of communication protocols for WSNs.

  • In this paper, we propose Restricted Angle-control Flooding considered density network of sensor nodes and node‘s limit energy. Restricted Angle-control Flooding, increase energy efficiency by reducing unnecessary candidate nodes involved in forwarding closer to the destination. And The Hole when faced with our proposal to raise rates data through Hole Detection which is sender‘s forwarding area is extended or broadcast to the entire network. Compared to the traditional flooding, we show the superiority at the node’s energy consumption, data rate and network lifetime through the performance.

  • Existing methods to measure are based on ToA (Timer of Arrival), RSS (Received Signal Strength), AoA(Angle of Arrival) and other methods. In this paper, we propose a compensation of ToA and RSS methods to measure more precisely the distance of nodes. The comparison experiments with the traditional ToA method show that the average error value of proposed method is reduced 30%. We believe that this proposal can improve location estimation of sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks.

  • Designing of a hierarchical clustering algorithm is one of the numerous approaches to minimize the energy consumption of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In this paper, a homogeneous and randomly deployed sensor nodes is considered. These sensors are energy constrained elements. The nominal selection of the Cluster Head (CH) which falls under the clustering part of the network protocol is studied and compared to Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol. CHs in this proposed process is the function of total remaining energy of each node as well as total average energy of the whole arrangement. The algorithm considers initial energy, optimum value of cluster heads to elect the next group of cluster heads for the network as well as residual energy. Total remaining energy of each node is compared to total average energy of the system and if the result is positive, these nodes are eligible to become CH in the very next round. Analysis and numerical simulations quantify the efficiency and Average Energy Ratio (AER) of the proposed system.

  • In oder to operate sensor networks effectively it is very important to use the energy in the individual nodes efficiently and so increase their lifetime. Cluster-based routing algorithms such as LEACH and HEED obtain the efficiency of energy using data transfer between cluster heads and its members. In this paper we analyze the typical cluster-based routing algorithms and suggest a new energy efficient method of electing the cluster heads with the maximum delay of dead nodes occurrence. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is verified through MATLAB simulation.

  • The use of mobile agents for collaborative processing in wireless sensor network has gained considerable attention. This is when mobile agents are used for data aggregation to exploit redundant and correlated data. The efficiency of agent-based data aggregation depends on the agent migration scheme. However, in general, most of the proposed schemes are centralized approach-based schemes where the sink node determines the migration paths for the agents before dispatching them in the sensor network. The main limitations with such schemes are that they need global network topology information for deriving the migration paths of the agents, which incurs additional communication overhead, since each node has a very limited communication range. In addition, a centralized approach does not provide fault tolerant and adaptive migration paths. In order to solve such problems, we have proposed a distributed approach-based scheme for determining the migration path of the agents where at each hop, the local information is used to decide the migration of the agents. In addition, we also propose a local repair mechanism for dealing with the faulty nodes. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme performs better than existing schemes in the presence of faulty nodes within the networks, and manages to report the aggregated data to the sink faster.

  • A network-coding-based scheme is proposed to improve the energy efficiency of distributed storage systems in WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks). We mainly focus on two problems: firstly, consideration is given to effective distributed storage technology; secondly, we address how to effectively repair the data in failed storage nodes. For the first problem, we propose a method to obtain a sparse generator matrix to construct network codes, and this sparse generator matrix is proven to be the sparsest. Benefiting from this matrix, the energy consumption required to implement distributed storage is reduced. For the second problem, we designed a network-coding-based iterative repair method, which adequately utilizes the idea of re-encoding at intermediate nodes from network coding theory. Benefiting from the re-encoding, the energy consumption required by data repair is significantly reduced. Moreover, we provide an explicit lower bound of field size required by this scheme, which implies that it can work over a small field and the required computation overhead is very low. The simulation result verifies that the proposed scheme not only reduces the total energy consumption required to implement distributed storage system in WSNs, but also balances energy consumption of the networks.

  • A wireless image sensor node collecting image data for environmental monitoring or surveillance requires a large amount of energy to transmit the huge amount of video data. Even though solar energy can be used to overcome the energy constraint, since the collected energy is also limited, an efficient energy management scheme for transmitting a large amount of video data is needed. In this paper, we propose a method to reduce the number of blackout nodes and increase the amount of gathered data by selecting an appropriate video coding method according to the energy condition of the node in a solar-powered wireless video sensor network. This scheme allocates the amount of energy that can be used over time in order to seamlessly collect data regardless of night or day, and selects a high compression coding method when the allocated energy is large and a low compression coding when the quota is low. Thereby, it reduces the blackout of the relay node and increases the amount of data obtained at the sink node by allowing the data to be transmitted continuously. Also, if the energy is lower than operating normaly, the frame rate is adjusted to prevent the energy exhaustion of nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme suppresses the energy exhaustion of the relay node and collects more data than other schemes.

  • In wireless sensor networks, a number of nodes deployed in dense manner should be self-configured to establish a topology that provides communication and sensing coverage under stringent energy constraints. To establish an efficient topology, we propose the TRaffic-Aware Topology control (TRAT) algorithm that reduces energy dissipation by considering total amount of data flows in the network. Our algorithm controls the number of active nodes with traffic information and adjusts nodal transmission power by estimating amount of data flows. According to the result, the proposed algorithm shows about 30% better performance than the other methods in terms of energy efficiency.

  • In this paper, we propose an Enhanced cross-layer Geographic Forwarding (EGF) protocol for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). EGF uses an optimal back-off time to make the packet forwarding decisions using only source and destination's location information and energy cost without information about neighbor nodes' location or the number of one hop neighbor nodes. EGF is also a cross-layer protocol by combining efficient asynchronous MAC and geographic routing protocol. The proposed protocol can find optimal next hop location quickly without broadcasting node's location update and with minimizing overhead. In our performance evaluation, EGF has better performance in terms of packet success ratio, energy efficiency and end-to-end delay in wireless sensor networks.
