  • Electro-Optical Camera(EOC) is the main payload of Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT) with the mission of cartography to build up a digital map of Korean territory including Digital Terrain Elevation Map(DTEM). This instrument which comprises EOC Sensor Assembly and EOC Electronics Assembly produces the panchromatic images of 6.6 m GSD with a swath wider than 17 km by push-broom scanning and spacecraft body pointing in a visible range of wavelength, 510 ~ 730 nm. The high resolution panchromatic image is to be collected for 2 minutes during 98 minutes of orbit cycle covering about 800 km along ground track, over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable rain/offset and on-board image data storage. The image of 8 bit digitization, which is collected by a full reflective type F8.3 triplet without obscuration, is to be transmitted to Ground Station at a rate less than 25 Mbps. EOC was elaborated to have the performance which meets or surpasses its requirements of design phase. The spectral response the modulation transfer function, and the uniformity of all the 2592 pixel of CCD of EOC are illustrated as they were measured for the convenience of end-user. The spectral response was measured with respect to each gain setup of EOC and this is expected to give the capability of generating more accurate panchromatic image to the EOC data users. The modulation transfer function of EOC was measured as greater than 16% at Nyquist frequency over the entire field of view which exceeds its requirement of larger than 10%, The uniformity that shows the relative response of each pixel of CCD was measured at every pixel of the Focal Plane Array of EOC and is illustrated for the data processing.

  • In this study, the dynamic response characteristics of the embankment model were analyzed using shaking table experiments. Laminar shear box was used to minimize the boundary effect of the model. The ratio of the vertical length to horizontal length of the slopes were 1:1, 1:1.5, and 1:2. The sensor array which is consist of 12 accelerometers was used to measure acceleration time-histories at each location of the slope model. The dynamic response characteristics of the models were analyzed for sine wave, sinesweep wave, and artificial earthquake wave in this study. The experimental results show that the dynamic response of the embankment model is increased with the slope angle. Furthermore, the experimental setup used in this study was verified with the comparative analysis between experimental results and 1-D analytical simulation on the flat ground model.

  • In this paper, we implemented a real-time system which displays 3-dimensional (3D) stereoscopic image with stereo camera. The system consists of a set of stereo camera, FPGA board, and 3D stereoscopic LCD. Two CMOS image sensor were used for the stereo camera. FPGA which processes video data was designed with Verilog-HDL, and it can accommodate various resolutional videos. The stereoscopic image is configured by two methods which are side-by-side and up-down image configuration. After the left and right images are converted to the type for the stereoscopic display, they are stored into SDRAM. When the next frame is inputted into FPGA from two CMOS image sensors, the previous video data is output to the DA converter for displaying it. From this pipeline operation, the real-time operation is possible. After the proposed system was implemented into hardware, we verified that it operated exactly.

  • Because GPS signals are weak, system jamming is a real and present danger. This can happen when the receiver is subjected to intentional or unintentional interference by a transmitter. If the jamming signal is strong enough, the receiver can be operated to take corrective action automatically. Current methods to protect GPS receiver from jamming condition are based on spatial filtering. In this paper, the beamforming as referred to in signal processing technique used in arrays for directional signal reception was suggested and analyzed for anti-jamming. In order to change the directionality of the array when receiving a jamming signal, a beamformer can control the signal at each sensor. Therefore, cutoff angle ${\theta}$ was measured in the opposite direction of the jammer. GPS signals are only processed when the antenna element is within inside the cutoff angle. As a result, GPS positioning can be used in condition under cutoff angle $30^{\circ}$.

  • We report the nitrogen monoxide (NO) gas sensing properties of p-type CuO-nanorod-based gas sensors. We synthesized the p-type CuO nanorods with breadth of about 30 nm and length of about 330 nm by a hydrothermal method using an as-deposited CuO seed layer prepared on a $Si/SiO_2$ substrate by the sputtering method. We fabricated polycrystalline CuO nanorod arrays at $80^{\circ}C$ under the hydrothermal condition of 1:1 morality ratio between copper nitrate trihydrate [$Cu(NO_2)_2{\cdot}3H_2O$] and hexamethylenetetramine ($C_6H_{12}N_4$). Structural characterizations revealed that we prepared the pure CuO nanorod array of a monoclinic crystalline structure without any obvious formation of secondary phase. It was found from the gas sensing measurements that the p-type CuO nanorod gas sensors exhibited a maximum sensitivity to NO gas in dry air at an operating temperature as low as $200^{\circ}C$. We also found that these CuO nanorod gas sensors showed reversible and reliable electrical response to NO gas at a range of operating temperatures. These results would indicate some potential applications of the p-type semiconductor CuO nanorods as promising sensing materials for gas sensors, including various types of p-n junction gas sensors.

  • Quality control of Argo(Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography) data is crucial by reason that salinity measurements are liable to experience some drift and offset due to biofouling, contamination of sensor and wash-out of biocide. The automated Argo real-time quality control has a limit of sorting data quality, so that WJO program is adopted as standardized method of Argo delayed mode quality control (DMQc) in the world that is a precise quality control method. We conducted DMQC on pressure, temperature and salinity measured by Argo floats in the Pacific Ocean including expert evaluation. Particularly, salinity data were corrected using WJO program. 4 salinity profiles of Argo delayed mode were compared with nearby in situ CTD data and other Argo data in deep layer where oceanographic conditions are stable in time and space. The differences of both salinities were lower than target accuracy of Argo. As compared with the difference of salinities before DMQC, those after DMQC decreased by 60-80 percent. Quality of delayed mode salinity data seemed to be improved correcting salinity data suggested by WJO program.

  • The Global Positioning System (GPS), Inertial Navigation System (INS) and Pseudolite (PL) technologies all play very important roles in navigation systems. As an independent navigation system, GPS can provide high precision positioning results which are independent of time. However, the performance will become unreliable when the system experiences high dynamics, or when the receiver is exposed to jamming or RF interference. In comparison to GPS, though INS is autonomous and provides good short-term accuracy, its use as a standalone navigation system is limited due to the time-dependent growth of the inertial sensor errors. PLs are ground-based transmitters that can transmit GPS-like signals. They have some advantages in that their positions can be determined precisely, and the Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNR) are relatively high. Because their combined performance, in principle, overcomes the shortcomings of the individual systems, the integration of GPS, INS and PL is increasingly receiving attention from researchers. Depending on the desired performance vs complexity, system integration can be carried out at different levels, namely loose, tight and ultra-tight coupling. Compared with loose and tight integration, although it is more complex in terms of system design, ultra-tight integration will be the basis of the next generation of reliable and robust navigation systems. Its main advantages include improved performance under exposure to high dynamics, and jamming and RF interference mitigation. This paper presents an overview of the ultra-tight integration developments and discusses some of the challenging issues.

  • Convenience and safety are the key words for the automotive driving and various sensor technologies have been studied for enhanced perception of driving environments. In frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems, single antenna is enough for range and velocity detection of multiple targets. Multiple array antenna is needed for estimating direction of arrival(DoA). Using DoA estimation algorithm in time domain as in the conventional systems, it is difficult to distinguish vehicles lie in the same angle. In order to facilitate the enhanced angle estimation, DoA estimation algorithm is applied in frequency domain. In this paper, the method for applying multiple signal classification(MUSIC) algorithm in frequency domain is suggested and the performance is analyzed.

  • Use of SiPM has been considered as an alternative to PMT, because of its compact size, low-operating voltage, non-sensitive to electromagnetic, low costs and so on. The main limitation for the use of SiPM is due to its small sensitive area compared to PMT that limits the light collection, and therefore the sensor energy resolution. In this article we studied the effect of increasing the number of SiPM by connecting them in parallel to increase the active detection area. This allowed us to compare the different energy resolution measurements. 137Cs has been selected as reference to study the energy resolution for 662 keV gamma-rays. Another investigation was to compare the minimum detectable gamma energy under various SiPM configurations. It has been found that the use of 4 SiPM arrays can greatly improve the energy resolution up to 4% than only one SiPM array, meanwhile use of more than 2 SiPM arrays does not increase the energy resolution significantly. Thus we can conclude that for a large area of cylindrical scintillator (3 × 3 inches), the use of SiPMs are limited to a certain number or certai active area depending on the commercial SiPMs, and its cost should be less than traditional PMT for the cost-effective and compact size considerations. It is well known that the gain of SiPM varies with temperature. In this article, we also calibrated gain to guarantee the same position of photoelectric peak in response of different temperatures.

  • In this paper, we describe a PCM encoder structure that can update the telemetry system parameters in real time. In the PCM encoder, an analog signal control unit for FPGA, flash memory, and sensor data acquisition was constructed. UART communication, analog signal control, flash memory control, and frame generation are possible through logic inside FPGA of PCM encoder. UART communication allows the PC to transmit parameter data to the PCM encoder, and flash memory is controlled to update the parameter of the telemetry system in real time and finally the frame is formed. Simulation and verification were performed to confirm whether the parameter data is updated in real time, and the proposed structure was used to construct a telemetry system with enhanced flexibility and convenience.
