An integration system with multi-measurement sets can be realized via combined application of a centralized and federated Kalman filter. It is difficult for the centralized Kalman filter to remove a failed sensor in comparison with the federated Kalman filter. All varieties of Kalman filters monitor innovation sequence (residual) for detection and isolation of a failed sensor. The innovation sequence, which is selected as an indicator of real time estimation error plays an important role in adaptive mechanism design. In this study, the centralized Kalman filter with adaptive measurement fusion is introduced by means of innovation sequence. The objectives of adaptive measurement fusion are automatic isolation and recovery of some sensor failures as well as inherent monitoring capability. The proposed adaptive filter is applied to the GPS/SDINS integration system with an additional sensor. Simulation studies attest that the proposed adaptive scheme is effective for isolation and recovery of immediate sensor failures.

Recently, deploying WiFi access points (APs) for facilitating indoor localization has attracted increasing attention. However, most existing mechanisms in this aspect are typically simulation based and further they did not consider how to jointly utilize pre-existing APs in target environment and newly deployed APs for achieving high localization performance. In this paper, we propose a measurement-based AP deployment mechanism (MAPD) for placing APs in target indoor environment for assisting fingerprint based indoor localization. In the mechanism design, MAPD takes full consideration of pre-existing APs to assist the selection of good candidate positions for deploying new APs. For this purpose, we first choose a number of candidate positions with low location accuracy on a radio map calibrated using the pre-existing APs and then use over-deployment and on-site measurement to determine the actual positions for AP deployment. MAPD uses minimal mean location error and progressive greedy search for actual AP position selection. Experimental results demonstrate that MAPD can largely reduce the localization error as compared with existing work.
Metal-oxide-based semiconductor gas sensors are widely used because of their advantages, such as high response and simple sensing mechanism. Recently, with the rapid progress in sensor networks, computing power, and microsystem technology, sensor applications are expanding to various fields, such as food quality control, environmental monitoring, healthcare, and artificial olfaction. Therefore, the development of highly selective gas sensors is crucial for practical applications. This article reviews the developments in novel sensor design consisting of sensing films and physical and chemical filters for highly selective gas sensing. Unlike conventional sensors, the sensor structures with filters can separate the sensing and catalytic reactions into independent processes, enabling selective and sensitive gas sensing. The main objectives of this study are directed at introducing the role of various filters in gas-sensing reactions and promising sensor applications. The highly selective gas sensors combined with a functional filter can open new pathways toward the advancement of high-performance gas sensors and electronic noses.
This paper presents a sensor-based cane mechanism for walking aid of the visually impaired person. We also describe an approach to decide properly the length of the specified cane mechanism. The cane mechanism has some sensors to identify the possibility of a collision between the cane user and an object and/or a person, and a signal processing unit that enables the user to recognize such a collision is attached in the mechanism. Thus, the walker using this cane can recognize in advance the possibility of such a collision in his walking process. Consequently, it is helpful for the visually impaired person to walk on a pedestrian road safely. The feature of the proposed cane mechanism and its availability have been shown through experimental works in a typical walking environment.
The work presented here is a design and development of sun tracking system for the parabolic dish concentrator. Parabolic dish concentrator is mounted on azimuth and elevation tracking mechanism, and controlled to track the sun with computed and measured sun positions. Sun tracking mechanism is composed of 1/30000 speed reducer(3 stages) and 400W AC servomotor for each axis. The nominal tracking speed of each axis is ${\pm}0.6^{\circ}/sec$ and the system has a driving range of $340^{\circ}$ in azimuth and of $135^{\circ}$ in elevation. Sun tracking control system consists of sun sensor, wind speed and direction measurement system, AC servomotor position control system and personal computer as a master controller. Sun sensor detects the sun located within ${\pm}50^{\circ}$ measured from the sun sensor normal direction. Computer computes the sun position, sunrise and sunset times and controls the orientation of parabolic dish concentrator through the AC servomotor position control system. It also makes a decision of whether the system should follow the sun or not based on the information collected from sun sensor and wind speed and direction measurement system. The sun tracking system developed in this work is implemented for the experimental work and shows a good sun tracking performance.

The interaction of the blade of surface-piercing propellers (SPPs) with the water/air surface is a physical phenomenon that is difficult to model mathematically, so that such propellers are usually designed using empirical approaches. In this paper, a newly developed mechanism for measuring the torque of SPPs in an open water circuit is presented. The mechanism includes a single-component load cell and a deformable torque sensor to detect the forces exerted on the propeller. Deformations in the sensor elements lead to changes in the strain gauge resistance, which are converted into voltage using a Wheatstone bridge. The amplified signal is then recorded by a 16-channel data recording system. The mechanism is calibrated using a 6-DoF calibration system and a Box-Behnken design, achieving 99% accuracy through multivariate regression and ANOVA. Finally, the results of performance tests on a 4-blade propeller were presented in the form of changes in the torque coefficient as a function of feed rate. The results show that the new mechanism is 8% more accurate than conventional empirical methods.
In this study, two new types of micro-grippers in which micro-fingers are actuated by piezoelectric multi-layer benders and stacks are introduced for the manipulation of micrometer-sized objects. First, we constructed a 3-chopstick-mechanism tungsten gripper, which is composed of three chopsticks: two are designed to grip micro-objects, and tile third is used to help grasp and release the objects through overcoming especially electrostatic force among some surface effects including electrostatic, van der Waals forces and surface tension. Second, a 2-chopstick-mechanism silicon micro-gripper that uses an integrated force sensor to control the gripping force was developed. The micro-gripper is composed of a piezoelectric multilayer bender for actuating the gripper fingers, silicon fingertips fabricated by use of silicon-based micromachining, and supplementary supports. The micro-gripper is referred to as a hybrid-type micro-gripper because it is composed of two main components; micro-fingertips fabricated using micromachining technology to integrate a very sensitive force sensor for measuring the gripping force, and piezoelectric gripper finger actuators that are capable of large gripping forces and moving strokes. The gripping force signal was found to have a sensitivity of 667 N/V. To the design of each of components of both of the grippers. a systematic design approach was applied, which made it possible to establish the functional requirements and design parameters of the micro-grippers. The micro-grippers were installed on a manual manipulator to assess its performance in tasks such as moving micro-objects from one position to a desired position. The experiment showed that the micro-grippers function effectively.
