In this paper, recent research trends and activities on structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructure in Korea are reviewed. Recently, there has been increasing need for adopting smart sensing technologies to SHM, so this review focuses on smart sensing, monitoring, and assessment for civil infrastructure. Firstly, the research activities on smart sensor technology is reviewed including optical fiber sensors, piezoelectric sensors, wireless smart sensors, and vision-based sensing system. Then, a brief overview is given to the recent advances in smart monitoring and assessment techniques such as vibration-based global monitoring techniques, local monitoring with piezoelectric materials, decentralized monitoring techniques for wireless sensors, wireless power supply and energy harvest. Finally, recent joint SHM activities on several test beds in Korea are discussed to share the up-to-date information and to promote the smart sensors and monitoring technologies for applications to civil infrastructure. It includes a Korea-US joint research on test bridges of the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC), a Korea-US-Japan joint research on Jindo cable-stayed bridge, and a comparative study for cable tension measurement techniques on Hwamyung cable-stayed bridge, and a campaign test for displacement measurement techniques on Sorok suspension bridge.
The degree of green naturality (DGN) has played a key role for maintaining the environmental quality from inappropriate developments, although the quality and effectiveness of the mapping of DGN has been under debate. In this study, spatial distribution of degree of green naturality was initially estimated from forest stand maps that were produced from the aerial photo interpretation and extensive field survey. Once the boundary of initial classes of DGN were defined, it were overlaid with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data that were derived from the recently obtained Landsat Thematic Mapper data. NDVI was calculated for each pixel from the radiometrically corrected satellite image. There were no significant differences in mean values of vegetation index among the initial DGN classes. However, the satellite derived vegetation index was very effective to delineate the developed and damaged forest lands and to adjust the initial value of DGN according to the distribution of NDVI within each class.
The accuracy of classifying pixels in HIRIS images is usually degraded by noisy bands since noisy bands may deform the typical shape of spectral reflectance. Proposed in this paper is a statistical method for noisy band removal which mainly makes use of the correlation coefficients between bands. Considering each band as a random variable, the correlation coefficient measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two random variables. While the correlation between two signal bands is high, existence of a noisy band will produce a low correlation due to ill-correlativeness and undirectedness. The application of the correlation coefficient as a measure for detecting noisy bands is under a two-pass screening scheme. This method is independent of the prior knowledge of the sensor or the cause resulted in the noise. The classification in this experiment uses the unsupervised k-nearest neighbor algorithm in accordance with the well-accepted Euclidean distance measure and the spectral angle mapper measure. This paper also proposes a hierarchical combination of these measures for spectral matching. Finally, a separability assessment based on the between-class and within-class scatter matrices is followed to evaluate the performance.

This paper presents the results obtained using time-series-based methods for structural damage assessment. The methods are applied to a wind turbine blade structure subjected to fatigue loads. A 9 m CX-100 (carbon experimental 100 kW) blade is harmonically excited at its first natural frequency to introduce a failure mode. Consequently, a through-thickness fatigue crack is visually identified at 8.5 million cycles. The time domain data from the piezoelectric active-sensing techniques are measured during the fatigue loadings and used to detect incipient damage. The damage-sensitive features, such as the first four moments and a normality indicator, are extracted from the time domain data. Time series autoregressive models with exogenous inputs are also implemented. These features could efficiently detect a fatigue crack and are less sensitive to operational variations than the other methods.
With an annual growth rate of about 30%, wind energy systems, such as wind turbines, represent one of the fastest growing renewable energy technologies. Continuous structural health monitoring of wind turbines can help improving structural reliability and facilitating optimal decisions with respect to maintenance and operation at minimum associated life-cycle costs. This paper presents an integrated monitoring system that is designed to support structural assessment and life-cycle management of wind turbines. The monitoring system systematically integrates a wide variety of hardware and software modules, including sensors and computer systems for automated data acquisition, data analysis and data archival, a multiagent-based system for self-diagnosis of sensor malfunctions, a model updating and damage detection framework for structural assessment, and a management module for monitoring the structural condition and the operational efficiency of the wind turbine. The monitoring system has been installed on a 500 kW wind turbine located in Germany. Since its initial deployment in 2009, the system automatically collects and processes structural, environmental, and operational wind turbine data. The results demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach not only to ensure continuous safety of the structures, but also to enable cost-efficient maintenance and operation of wind turbines.
We carried out accuracy assessment for DEM extraction from the KOMPSAT-1 EOC stereo images over Daejeon and Nonsan in Korea. DEM generation divided into two parts. One is camera modeling and the other stereo matching. We used Orun & Natarajan's(1994) model and Gupta & Hartley's(1997) model in the camera modeling step and checked the possibility using Orun & Natarajan and Gupta & Hartley's models in EOC stereo pairs. For stereo matching, we used an algorithms developed in-house for SPOT images and showed that this algorithm could work with EOC images. Using these algorithms, DEMs were successfully generated from EOC images. The comparison of DEM from EOC Images with a DEM from SPOT Images showed that EOC could be used for high-accuracy DEM generation.

This paper presents the results of a pilot study and verification of a concept of a novel methodology for damage detection and assessment of water distribution system. The unique feature of the proposed noninvasive methodology is the use of accelerometers installed on the pipe surface, instead of pressure sensors that are traditionally installed invasively. Experimental observations show that a sharp change in pressure is always accompanied by a sharp change of pipe surface acceleration at the corresponding locations along the pipe length. Therefore, water pressure-monitoring can be transformed into acceleration-monitoring of the pipe surface. The latter is a significantly more economical alternative due to the use of less expensive sensors such as MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) or other acceleration sensors. In this scenario, monitoring is made for Maximum Pipe Acceleration Gradient (MPAG) rather than Maximum Water Head Gradient (MWHG). This paper presents the results of a small-scale laboratory experiment that serves as the proof of concept of the proposed technology. The ultimate goal of this study is to improve upon the existing SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) by integrating the proposed non-invasive monitoring techniques to ultimately develop the next generation SCADA system for water distribution systems.

This study aims to analyze working hours of sprinkler heads when a fire occurs at an indoor gymnasium while sprinkler heads are installed in division of standard response type, special response type, and earlier response type. The fire scenario was designed under the assumption that the fire started from overheating of a heater in the indoor gymnasium has transferred on to a couch to spread. The analysis on the operation time of the standard response type sprinkler head, the special response type sprinkler head and the early response sprinkler head was conducted. The result showed that, in case of fire in a gymnasium, the time for opening of the heat sensor due to the heat from the fire varies by the type of the sprinkler head. When a special response type sprinkler is installed, it worked below the assessment standards. When an early response sprinkler head is installed, it worked appropriately according to assessment standards. Based on the results, we found that sprinkler heads will work properly when installed according to design relevant to laws and regulations. This means that there is a limit in installation of sprinkler heads based on the existing law-based design as for indoor gymnasiums. Again, we conclude that if sprinkler heads are installed based on design made through laws and regulations, more time will be needed for operation, making it highly likely to fail to stop a fire at an earlier point of time.
The evaluation of the print quality of 3D printing has traditionally relied on manual work using dimensional measurements. However, the dimensional measurement method has an error value that depends on the person who measures it. Therefore, we propose the design of a new print quality measurement method that can be automatically measured using the field-of-view (FOV) model and the intersection over union (IoU) technique. First, the height information of the modeling is acquired from a camera; the output is measured by a sensor; and the images of the top and isometric views are acquired from the FOV model. The height information calculates the height ratio by calculating the percentage of modeling and output, and compares the 2D contour of the object on the image using the FOV model. The contour of the object is obtained from the image for 2D contour comparison and the IoU is calculated by comparing the areas of the contour regions. The accuracy of the automated measurement technique for determining, which derives the print quality value was calculated by averaging the IoU value corrected by the measurement error and the height ratio value.

Error assessment and evaluation for machine for machine tool slides have been considered as essential tools for improving accuracy. In this paper, a computer aided measurement technique is proposed using photo pin diodes of quadrant type and laser source. In thedeveloped system, three photo diodes are mounted on a sensor mounting table, and the sensored signal is processed by specially designed signal conditioner to give fine resolution with minimum noise. A micro computer inputs the processed signal, and the geometric errors of five degree of freedoms are successfully evaluated. Pitch, roll, yaw, vertical and horizontal straightness errors are thus assessed simultaneously for a machine tool slide. Calibration techniques such as optics calibration, photo diode calibration are proposed and implemented, giving precise calibration for the measurement system. The developed system has been applied to a practical machine tool slide, and has been found as one of efficient and precise technique for machine tool slide.
