  • The purpose of this study is to propose a novel high sensitivity neuro-PET design. The improvement of sensitivity in neuro-PET is important because it can reduce scan time and/or radiation dose. In this study, we proposed a novel PET detector design that combined conical shape detector with cylindrical one to obtain high sensitivity. The sensitivity as a function of the oblique angle and the ratio of the conical to cylindrical portion was estimated to optimize the design of brain PET using Monte Carlo simulation tool, GATE. An axial sensitivity and misplacement rate by penetration of ${\gamma}$ rays were also estimated to evaluate the performance of the proposed PET. The sensitivity was improved by 36% at the center of axial FOV. This value was similar to the calculated value. The misplacement rate of conical shaped PET was about 5% higher than the conventional PET. The results of this study demonstrated the conical detector proposed in this study could provide subsequent improvement in sensitivity which could allow to design high sensitivity PET for brain imaging.

  • Sensitivity analysis is used to determine the effect of a change in a design parameter on the total system, and the calculated sensitivity is an important indicator of the improvement of a structure. In this study, we investigated the method of deriving and analyzing the sensitivity of design parameters by using finite element analysis and the method of improving a structure by using sensitivity analysis results. Design parameters for weight reduction design were selected using actual semiconductor inspection equipment that requires structural improvement, and the sensitivity to design parameters was calculated by using and finite difference method. We propose an improvement method that can reduce the weight while maintaining the transient response required by the equipment. By using the results of the sensitivity analysis through finite element analysis and finite difference method, we can create a structurally improved design that satisfies the desired stress or displacement by improving the design of the structure. Therefore, sensitivity analysis is applicable to various fields as well as semiconductor inspection equipment.

  • To do breath alcohol measurement, a sensor is necessary that it can detect low alcohol gas concentration of 0.01% at least. In this work, a capacitance-type alcohol gas sensor using porous silicon layer is developed to measure low alcohol gas concentration. The sensor using porous silicon layer has some sensitivity at room temperature by very large effective surface area, but there is still much room for improvement. In this experiment, we measured the capacitance of the sensor under 254 nm UV light on the porous silicon layer, in which alcohol solution was kept in a flask at 25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$ by a heater. As the result, the improvement of sensitivity by illuminating UV light was observed. The increasing rate of the capacitance was shown to be double more than those measured under UV-off state. It is supposed that UV light activates response of the oriental and interfacial polarizations which have slow relaxation time for AC field.

  • The performance improvement of a small-size integrated-type fully hydraulic breaker is studied in this paper. Mathematical modeling of the breaker is established and verified by experiment. Through sensitivity analysis using AMESim, the key design parameters are selected and nearly optimized to maximize the impact energy as well as to improve the dynamic characteristics such as the piston upper chamber pressure, piston and valve displacements. As a result, the impact energy, blows per minute(bpm) and output power are increased by 52.9%, 1%, and 55.6%, respectively compared with the current design. The dynamic characteristics of the piston upper chamber pressure, piston and valve displacements are also improved by the design change.

  • Structural optimization often requires the evaluation of design sensitivities. The Semi Aanalytic method(SAM) for computing sensitivity is popular in shape optimization because this method has several advantages. But when relatively large rigid body motions are identified for individual elements, the SA method shows severe inaccuracy. In this paper, the improvement of design sensitivities corresponding to the rigid body mode is evaluated by exact differentiation of the rigid body modes. Moreover, the error of the SA method caused by numerical difference scheme is alleviated by using a series approximation for the sensitivity derivatives and considering the higher order terms. Finally, this paper shows that the refined SA method including the iterative method improves the results of sensitivity analysis in dynamic problems.

Teaching unit was focused on 'The structure and function of plants' in 6th grade science text book. The subjects of study were 51 students of two classes. One class of 25 students, experimental group, wrote science diaries as homework. While the other class of 26 students, comparative group, performed homeworks with fill-in-the-blank worksheets. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, writing science diary had a meaningful effect on improvement of science learning motivation. Second, writing science diary had a meaningful effect on improvement of science academic achievement. Third, writing science diary had a meaningful effect on improvement of ecological sensitivity. And we could find that students had a favorable impression and high satisfaction level about writing science diary from the questionnaire.

  • Several test methods, including micro strain/deformation measurement techniques, have been studied to more reliably measure the micro properties in micro/nano materials. Therefore, in this study, the continuous measurement of in-plane tensile strain in micro-sized specimens of thin film materials was introduced using the micro-ESPI technique. TiN and Au thin films 1 and $0.47\;\mu{m}$ thick, respectively, were deposited on the silicon wafer and fabricated into the micro-sized tensile specimens using the electromachining process. The micro-tensile loading system and micro-ESPI system were developed to measure the tensile strain during micro-tensile test. The micro-tensile stress-strain for these materials was determined using the algorithm for continuous strain measurement. Furthermore, algorithm for enhancing the sensitivity to measurement of in-plane tensile strain was suggested. According to the algorithm for enhancement of sensitivity, micro-tensile strain data between interfringe were calculated. It is shown that the algorithm for enhancement of the sensitivity suggested in this study makes the sensitivity to the in-plane tensile strain increase.

  • Optimal design parameters are estimated from the sensitivity function and performance index variation. Suspension design modification for performance improvement and basic materials for practical applications are presented. The linear quarter model of a vehicle suspension is analyzed in order to represent the utilities of sensitivity analysis, and sensitivity function is determined in the frequency domain. The change of frequency response function is predicted, which depends on the design parameter variation and the property is verified by computer simulation. As an investigation results of sensitivity function for the vibrational amplitude of sprung mass to road profile input, it is shown that the most sensitive parameters are the suspension damping and the suspension stiffness. In order to identify the effects of these two parameters to the performance of suspension system, the performance index variation according to the changes of parameters is considered and then optimal design parameters are determined. It is verified that the system response is improved noticeably in the both of frequency and time domain after the design modification with the optimal parameters.

  • The paper describes the improvement on concurrent subspace optimization(CSSO) via automatic differentiation. CSSO is an efficient strategy to coupled multidisciplinary design optimization(MDO), wherein the original design problem is non-hierarchically decomposed into a set of smaller, more tractable subspaces. Key elements in CSSO are consisted of global sensitivity equation, subspace optimization, optimum sensitivity analysis, and coordination optimization problem that require frequent use of 1st order derivatives to obtain design sensitivity information. The current version of CSSO adopts automatic differentiation scheme to provide a robust sensitivity solution. Automatic differentiation has numerical effectiveness over finite difference schemes tat require the perturbed finite step size in design variable. ADIFOR(Automatic Differentiation In FORtran) is employed to evaluate sensitivities in the present work. The use of exact function derivatives facilitates to enhance the numerical accuracy during the iterative design process. The paper discusses how much the automatic differentiation based approach contributes design performance, compared with traditional all-in-one(non-decomposed) and finite difference based approaches.
