  • With the increasing availability of high-performance computing (HPC) platforms, uncertainty quantification (UQ) and sensitivity analyses (SA) can be efficiently leveraged to optimize design parameters of complex engineering problems using modeling and simulation tools. The workflow involved in such studies heavily relies on HPC resources and hence requires pre-processing and post-processing capabilities of large amounts of data along with remote submission capabilities. The NEAMS Workbench addresses all aspects of the workflows involved in these studies by relying on a user-friendly graphical user interface and a python application program interface. This paper highlights the NEAMS Workbench capabilities by presenting a semiautomated coupling scheme between Dakota and any given package integrated with the NEAMS Workbench, yielding a simplified workflow for users. This new capability is demonstrated by running a SA of a turbulent flow in a pipe using the open-source Nek5000 CFD code. A total of 54 jobs were run on a HPC platform using the remote capabilities of the NEAMS Workbench. The results demonstrate that the semiautomated coupling scheme involving Dakota can be efficiently used for UQ and SA while keeping scripting tasks to a minimum for users. • Fragility functions are determined for braced steel moment frames (SMFs) with plans such as square-, T-, L-, U-, trapezoidal-, and semicircular-shaped, subjected to blast. The frames are designed for gravity and seismic loads, but not necessarily for the blast loads. The blast load is computed for a wide range of scenarios involving different parameters, viz. charge weight, standoff distance, and blast location relative to plan of the structure followed by nonlinear dynamic analysis of the frames. The members failing in rotation lead to partial collapse due to plastic mechanism formation. The probabilities of partial collapse of the SMFs, with and without bracing system, due to the blast loading are computed to plot fragility curves. The charge weight and standoff distance are taken as Gaussian random input variables. The extent of propagation of the uncertainties in the input parameters onto the response quantities and fragility of the SMFs is assessed by computing Sobol sensitivity indices. The probabilistic analysis is conducted using Monte Carlo simulations. The frames have least failure probability for blasts occurring in front of their corners or convex face. Further, the unbraced frames are observed to have higher fragility as compared to counterpart braced frames for far-off detonations.

  • As a part of round robin analysis to develop a finite element elastic-plastic seismic analysis procedure for nuclear safety class 1 components, a series of parametric analyses was carried out on the simulated pressurizer surge line system model to investigate sensitivity of the analysis results to finite element analysis variables. The analysis on the surge line system model considered dynamic effect due to the seismic load corresponding to PGA 0.6 g and elastic-plastic material behavior based on the Chaboche combined hardening model. From the parametric analysis results, it was found that strains such as accumulated equivalent plastic strain and equivalent plastic strain are more sensitive to the analysis variables than von Mises effect stress. The parametric analysis results also identified that finite element density and ovalization option in the elbow elements have more significant effect on the analysis results than the other variables.

  • The main purpose of this study is to characterize the size-dependent strain rate sensitivity in structural steel using the continue stiffness measurement (CSM) indentation. A series of experiments, such as CSM indentation and optical microscope examination, has been performed at the room temperature at different rate conditions. The results indicated that indentation hardness, strain rate, and flow stress showed size-dependent behavior. The dependency of indentation hardness, strain rate, and flow stress on the indentation size was attributed to the transition of the dislocation nucleation rate and the dislocation behaviors during the indentation process. Since both hardness and strain rate showed the size-dependent behavior, SRS tended to depend on the indentation depth. The results indicated that the SRS was quite high over 2.0 at the indentation depth of 240 nm and quickly dropping to 0.08, finally around 0.046 at large indents. The SRS values at large indentations strongly agree with the general range reported for several types of low-carbon steel in the literature (Chatfield and Rote 1974, Nguyen et al. 2018b, Luecke et al. 2005). The results from the present study can be used in both static and dynamic analyses of structures as well as to assess and understand the deformation mechanism and the stress-state of material underneath the indenter tip during the process of the indentation testing.

  • Purpose: This study investigates the relationship between preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR), albumin, and 2-year mortality in elderly patients having hemiarthroplasty for displaced femoral neck fracture (FNF). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 284 elderly patients who underwent hemiarthroplasty for Garden type IV FNF from September 2014 to September 2020. Using the receiver operating characteristic curve, optimal cutoff values for LCR, NLR, and albumin were established, and patients were categorized as low or high. Associations with 2-year mortality were evaluated through univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Results: Of the 284 patients, 124 patients (45.9%) died within 2 years post-surgery. The optimal cutoff values were: LCR at 7.758 (specificity 58.5%, sensitivity 25.0%), NLR at 3.854 (specificity 39.2%, sensitivity 40.0%), and albumin at 3.750 (specificity 65.9%, sensitivity 21.9%). Patients with low LCR (<7.758), high NLR (≥3.854), and low albumin (<3.750) had a statistically significant reduced survival time compared to their counterparts. Conclusion: Lower preoperative LCR and albumin levels, along with higher NLR, effectively predict 2-year mortality and 30-day post-surgery complications in elderly patients with Garden type IV FNF undergoing hemiarthroplasty.

  • In this study, local dynamic characteristics of mountable PZT interfaces are numerically analyzed to verify their feasibility on impedance monitoring of the prestress-loss in tendon anchorage subsystems. Firstly, a prestressed tendon-anchorage system with mountable PZT interfaces is described. Two types of mountable interfaces which are different in geometric and boundary conditions are designed for impedance monitoring in the tendon-anchorage subsystems. Secondly, laboratory experiments are performed to evaluate the impedance monitoring via the two mountable PZT interfaces placed on the tendon-anchorage under the variation of prestress forces. Impedance features such as frequency-shifts and root-mean-square-deviations are quantified for the two PZT interfaces. Finally, local dynamic characteristics of the two PZT interfaces are numerically analyzed to verify their performances on impedance monitoring at the tendon-anchorage system. For the two PZT interfaces, the relationships between structural parameters and local vibration responses are examined by modal sensitivity analyses.

  • Numerical simulations of 1,2 dichloroethane(EDC) pyrolysis are conducted to understand the process on the production of the vinyl chloride monomer(VCM) and by-products. A chemical kinetic mechanism is developed, the adopted scheme involving 44 gas-phase species and 260 elementary forward and backward reactions. Detailed sensitivity analyses and the rates of production analysis are performed on each of the reactions and the various species, respectively. The concentrations of EDC, VCM, and HCI predicted by this mechanism are in good agreement with those deduced from experiments of commercial and laboratory scale. The mechanism is found to accurately predict the VCM yield and the production of by-products by varying the ranges of pyrolysis temperature, residence time, and pressure which impact on the pyrolysis of 1,2 dichloroethane. The influence of reactions related to H atom on the relative sensitivity of EDC becomes important as the residence time increases. The pyrolysis of EDC mainly occurs through $C_{2}H_{4}Cl_{2}+Cl=CH_{2}ClCHCl$.

  • This paper introduces the fundamentals of the conventional LC low-pass filter circuit in the fractional domain. First, we study the new fundamentals of fractional-order LC low-pass filter circuit including the pure real angular frequency, the pure imaginary angular frequency and the short circuit angular frequency. Moreover, sensitivity analysis of the impedance characteristics and phase characteristics of the LC low-pass filter circuit with respect to the system variables is studied in detail, which shows the greater flexibility of the fractional-order filter circuit in designs. Furthermore, from the filtering property perspective, we systematically investigate the effects of the system variables (LC, frequency f and fractional orders) on the amplitude-frequency characteristics and phase-frequency characteristics. In addition, the detailed analyses of the cut-off frequency and filter factor are presented. Numerical experimental results are presented to verify the theoretical results introduced in this paper.

  • In this study, the effects of water vapor in inlet air on combustion efficiency, general performance, knock characteristics and emission gas concentration were investig- ated through the experiments of combustion and vibration analyses, emission gas analysis by changing water vapor quantity in inlet air with temperature and humidity auto control unit. With partial vapor pressure increase, the brake torque at wide open throttle status decreased and the average ignition delay angle increased, IMEP (indicated mean effective pressured using the integral and 3rd derivatives of filtered cylinder pressure as knock intensity, which matched well with the method of frequency power spectrum of block vibration signal. Water vapor in intake air had influence on the spark knock sensitivity. With the increase of water vapor content in intake air NOx emission was decreased and HC emission was increased.

  • With lots of portable convergence mobile device coming out into the market, companies are now facing to take up consumers' needs. The products are popularized by 'skin function' in the field of hardware, whereas software wise, it's still a long way to follow up the needs. It's been hypothetically known that the Image of Sensitivity Adjective chosen by the users can increase the brand image and value creating capabilities through visualization. We collect the 'adjective' of images of recent products first and on that base, we sort out the most popular 'adjective' through grouping, then we actualize the image with that sample collective body. Then through analyses of the image, we find how they are correlated and what their elements are with the result.
