  • One of the important properties of a 'good' response surface design is that the design should be insensitive to wild observations. In this note, a measure of sensitivity to wild observations is studied. It is shown that designs are made robust to wild observations by making $Tr[X'X)^{-1}M]$ small where M is a moment matrix over some region of interest. The proposed criterion is compared with that suggested by Box and Draper. Some about robust two-variable response surface designs are given.

  • Vestibular hair cells, the sensory receptors of vestibular organs, selectively amplify miniscule stimuli to attain high sensitivity. Such selective amplification results in compressive nonlinear sensitivity, which plays an important role in expanding dynamic range while ensuring robustness of the system. In this study, negative stiffness mechanism, a mechanism responsible for the selective amplification by vestibular hair cells, is applied to a simple mechanical system consisting of an array of inverted pendulums. The structure and working principle of the system have been inspired by gating spring hypothesis proposing that opening and closing of transduction channels contributes to the global stiffness of vestibular hair bundle. Parameter study was carried out to analyze the effect of each parameter on the compressive nonlinearity of suggested model.

  • Deadbeat technique has been proposed as a digital controller for an UPS inverter to achieve the fast, response to a load variation and to conserve a very low THD under a nonlinear load condition. This scheme contains a fatal drawback, sensitivity against parameter variation and calculation time delay. This paper proposes a second order deadbeat controller, which fundamentally solves the calculation time delay problem and certainly guarantees the robustness of the parameter's variation. RLP(Repetitive Load Predictor) which predicts the load current ahead of two sampling time and FVR(Fundamental Voltage Regulator) which eliminates the fundamental errors of the output voltage are also proposed for the second order deadbeat controller to apply to UPS inverter systems. These are shown theoretically and practically through simulation and experiment.

  • A novel method for optical phase shaped binary transmission (PSBT) generation has been recently reported and experimentally evaluated. An amelioration of the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) sensitivity of the optical PSBT modulation format is proposed with the application of the concepts of enhanced electrical PSBT signal generation. Enhanced optical PSBT is proposed here as a modulation format producing a 0.7 dB gain in OSNR sensitivity compared to OPSBT, while maintaining a good robustness to group velocity dispersion: 100 ps/nm for enhanced optical PSBT and 120 ps/nm for optical PSBT, compared to 50 ps/nm for standard NRZ signals.

  • In 1980's to 1990's the marine propulsion diesel engines have been developed into lower speed and longer stroke for the energy saving(small S.F.O.C.). As these new trends the convetional mechnical-hydraulic governors were not adapted to the new requirements and the digital governors have been adopted in the marine use. The digital governors usually use the control algorithms such as the PID control, optimal control, adaptive control and etc. While the engine has delay time and parameter variations these control algorithms have difficulty in considering the stability and the robustness for the model uncertainty. In this study, the $H_{\infty}$ controller design method are applied to the speed control of the low speed marine diesel engine. By comparison the $H_{\infty}$ control results with the PID control results, the validity of the $H_{\infty}$ controller under the delay time and parameter variations is confirmed.

  • Input shaping is a method for reducing residual vibration in computer controlled machines. Vibration is eliminated by convolving a sequence of impulses, an input shaper, with a desired system command to produce a shaped input. This paper shows the shape of sensitivity curve of input shaper as impulse interval T and analysis of robustness for input shaper on the z-plane. And a method is presented for designing equivalent input shaper considering sampling time $T_s$. And then we applied equivalent input shaper to crane system.

  • An improved optimization algorithm for multi-objective and multi-level (MO/ML) optimum design of steel frames is proposed in this paper. In order to optimize the steel frames under seismic load, two main objective functions need to be considered for minimizing the structural weight and maximizing the strain energy. For the efficiency of the proposed method, well known multi-level optimization techniques using decomposition method that separately utilizes both system-level and element-level optimizations and an artificial constraint deletion technique are incorporated in the algorithm. And also dynamic analysis is executed to evaluate the implicit function of structural strain energy at each iteration step. To save the numerical efforts, an efficient reanalysis technique through sensitivity analysis of dynamic properties is unposed in the paper. The efficiency and robustness of the improved MOML algorithm, compared with a plain MOML algorithm, is successfully demonstrated in the numerical examples.

  • This paper describes the design of H-infinity controller for robust control of a DC motor system. The suggested controller can ensure robustness against disturbance and model uncertainty by minimizing H-infinity norm of the transfer function from exogenous input to performance output and applying the small gain theorem. In particular, the controller was designed to reduce the effects of disturbance and model uncertainty simultaneously by formalizing these problems as a mixed sensitivity problem. The validity of the proposed controller was demonstrated by computer simulations and real experiments. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed controller was confirmed by comparing its performance with PI controller, which was tested under the same experimental condition as the H-infinity controller.

  • This paper describes the sensitivity stability of a mandrel type fiber optic acoustic sensor with respect to its environmental conditions such as hydrostatic pressure and underwater temperature. The sensors under consideration have various mandrel structures such as a cylindrical mandrel, a concentric composite mandrel, and an air-backed concentric composite mandrel. The analysis results show that the sensors have such good robustness, less than 0.15dB, in its sensitivity with respect to the variation in hydrostatic pressure. Further, the nylon concentric composite mandrel type sensor including an air cavity turns out to have the most superior stability than others to the underwater temperature variations.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive image watermarking algorithm in DWT domain by using HVS(human Visual system) and SOM(Self-Organizing Map) among neural networks. HVS can be described in terms of two properties of HVS: brightness and texture sensitivity. The SOM is used to obtain the local characteristics of image, Therefore, the suitable strength and length of embedded watermark is determined by using HVS and SOM. The experimental results show that proposed method provides a suitable strength and length of watermark and has good perceptual invisibility and robustness for various attacks.
