  • Sensitivity information is required in the optimal design process. In structural optimization, sensitivity calculation is a bottleneck due to its complexities and expensiveness. Various schemes have been proposed for the calculation. Analytic and finite difference methods are the most popular at the present time. However, they have advantages and disadvantages in different ways. Semi-anayltic method has been suggested to overcome the difficulties. In spite of the excellency, the semi-analytic method has been found to possess numerical error quite much with respect to shape variables. In this research, the error from each method is evaluated and compared using a shape variable. A two-dimensional beam is selected for an example since it has mathematical solution. An efficient method is suggested for the structural optimization which utilizes finite element method.

  • The interior sound pressure level of the Korean high speed train is predicted using ray acoustic method. The motor car, motorized car and passenger cabin are investigated under the environment of passing open countryside and inside tunnel Calculated sound levels of KHST are compared with the those of KTX prototype which vehicle shows similar acoustic behavior with KHST for the purpose of assuring the calculated data. In order to reduce the calculated SPL in systematic way, contribution analysis of sound sources and sensitivity analysis of concerning wall's transmission loss on the SPL of the designated receiving points are carried out. Finally, practical design suggestions are proposed.

  • This paper is about study how to decrese surge pressure that is occurred in excavator driving motor. We used computer simulation program SimulationX. It is also about the way finding design problem and approaching a solution through interpreting shape design sensitivity analysis. Programmes are below. First of all, finding shape fault by analyzing dynamic behavior of valves installed in hydraulic driving motor which is designed now. And drawing variable which is considered sensitive to improve dynamic efficiency among a lot of shape variables. Then, targeting that variable and examining dynamic efficiency stabilization tendency with controlling it. Finally, suggesting the most effective tuning method through variable combination as there are a lot of sensitive variables.

  • Sensitivity analysis of suspension elements of an articulated bogie for light railway vehicles is presented. The ride, stability and safety are used as dynamic performance indices. Suspension elements of 10 and a conicity of wheel are used as design variables. To analyze sensitivity of design variables. the railway vehicle dynamics analysis program AGEM is used. The results show that the secondary suspension elements have a strong effect on ride and the primary suspension elements have a moderate effect on ride. Conicity of wheel has a strong effect on the stability. The safety is not effected by all the design variables.

  • This paper presents the adjoint variable design sensitivity analysis for thermal systems considering both conduction and convection heat transfer. Both nodal temperature and total heat flow are considered to be objective functions and design sensitivity formulas are derived for each case. For the case of convection heat transfer, the adjoint analysis is carefully proceeded to obtain a precise result. A topology optimization example is examined for a simple planar square plate in order to design a heat exchanger as verification.

  • Recently a lot of researches have been conducted on the progressive collapse of structures which is the total collapse of structures initiated by localized damage. Most of the previous studies on the field of progressive collapse have followed deterministic approach without considering uncertainty involved in design variables, which results in unknown reliability of the analysis results. In this study the sensitivity analyses are carried out with design variables such as yield strength, live load, damping ratio, and elastic modulus on the vertical deflection of the joint from which a column is suddenly removed. The Monte Calro simulation, tornado diagram method, and the first order second moment method(FOSM) are applied for the sensitivity study. According to the nonlinear static analysis results, the vertical deflection is most affected by the variation of yield strength of beams. The nonlinear dynamic analyses show that the behaviour of model structures is highly sensitive to variation of the yield strength of beams and the structural damping ratio.

  • In the prototype stage of a car developing program, the efficiency of trouble shooting is an important factor to be considered. Structural modifications by the design sensitivity analysis are applied to a steering wheel system for improving the idle vibration of the prototype passenger car. For the design sensitivity analysis, the experimental modal analysis for the steering system attached to a body-in-white is fulfilled and the modal parameters extracted from the experimental data are used to predict the effect of structural modification, The design sensitivity results rank the locations to be reinforced in terms of frequency variation. The modification of steering system according to the sensitivity analysis results shifted the resonant frequency of the system effectively. In addition, the idle test of the car after the structural modifications f steering system shows that the proposed method can reduce vibration of the steering wheel efficiently.

  • In this study, and analytical method for ride sensitivity analysis of a train with non-linear suspension elements are proposed. Non-linear characteristics of springs and dampers for primary and secondary suspensions of a train are parameterized using polynomial interpolation. Vertical dynamic model of a three-body train running on straight rail with the predetermined roughness expressed in terms of spectral density function is set up and its equations of motion for ride analysis are derived. Using the direct differentiation method, sensitivity equations of the vertical dynamic model with respect to design parameters associated with non-linearity of suspensions are obtained. Based on the sensitivity analysis, improvement of ride is achieved by varying appropriate suspension parameters.

  • A direct differentiationmethod is presented for the shape design sensitivity analysis of axisymmeetric elastic solids. Based on the exisymmetric boundary integralequaiton formulation, a new boundary ntegral equatio for sensitivity analysis is derived by taking meterial derivative to the same integral identity that was used in the adjoint variable melthod. Numerical implementation is performed to show the applicaiton of the theoretical formulation. For a simple example with analytic solution, the sensitivities by present method are compared with analytic sensitivities. As an application to the shape optimization, an optimal shape of a gas turbine disc toinimize the weight under stress constraints is found by incorporating the sensitivity analysis algorithm in an optimizatio program.

  • A variational approach with reference volume and adjoint structure concepts is applied for the structural design densitivity analysis of geometrically nonlinear structures. A general form of sensitivity equation is used and then nonlinear finite element procedure is implemented for the discretized structural model. Usability and effectiveness of the variational approach for the design sensitivity analysis of geometrically nonlinear structural responses are verified through a numerical example.
