Since aerosols adversely affect human health, such as deteriorating air quality, quantitative observation of the distribution and characteristics of aerosols is essential. Recently, satellite-based Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data is used in various studies as periodic and quantitative information acquisition means on the global scale, but optical sensor-based satellite AOD images are missing in some areas with cloud conditions. In this study, we produced gap-free GeoKompsat 2A (GK-2A) Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI) AOD hourly images after generating a Random Forest based gap-filling model using grid meteorological and geographic elements as input variables. The accuracy of the model is Mean Bias Error (MBE) of -0.002 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.145, which is higher than the target accuracy of the original data and considering that the target object is an atmospheric variable with Correlation Coefficient (CC) of 0.714, it is a model with sufficient explanatory power. The high temporal resolution of geostationary satellites is suitable for diurnal variation observation and is an important model for other research such as input for atmospheric correction, estimation of ground PM, analysis of small fires or pollutants.
Cloud detection and removal from satellite images is an essential process for topographic observation and analysis. Threshold-based cloud detection techniques show stable performance because they detect using the physical characteristics of clouds, but they have the disadvantage of requiring all channels' images and long computational time. Cloud detection techniques using deep learning, which have been studied recently, show short computational time and excellent performance even using only four or less channel (RGB, NIR) images. In this paper, we confirm the performance dependence of the deep learning network according to the heterogeneous learning dataset with different resolutions. The DeepLabV3+ network was improved so that channel features of cloud detection were extracted and learned with two published heterogeneous datasets and mixed data respectively. As a result of the experiment, clouds' Jaccard index was low in a network that learned with different kind of images from test images. However, clouds' Jaccard index was high in a network learned with mixed data that added some of the same kind of test data. Clouds are not structured in a shape, so reflecting channel features in learning is more effective in cloud detection than spatial features. It is necessary to learn channel features of each satellite sensors for cloud detection. Therefore, cloud detection of heterogeneous sensors with different resolutions is very dependent on the learning dataset.
This paper presents a novel training data extraction approach using semi-supervised learning (SSL)-based classification without the analyst intervention for time-series land-cover mapping. The SSL-based approach first performs initial classification using initial training data obtained from past images including land-cover characteristics similar to the image to be classified. Reliable training data from the initial classification result are then extracted from SSL-based iterative classification using classification uncertainty information and class labels of neighboring pixels as constraints. The potential of the SSL-based training data extraction approach was evaluated from a classification experiment using unmanned aerial vehicle images in croplands. The use of new training data automatically extracted by the proposed SSL approach could significantly alleviate the misclassification in the initial classification result. In particular, isolated pixels were substantially reduced by considering spatial contextual information from adjacent pixels. Consequently, the classification accuracy of the proposed approach was similar to that of classification using manually extracted training data. These results indicate that the SSL-based iterative classification presented in this study could be effectively applied to automatically extract reliable training data for time-series land-cover mapping.

The particulate matter (PM) has emerged as a hot topic around the world as it has been reported that PM is related to an increase in mortality and prevalence rates. In South Korea, the importance of PM has been recognized since the late 1990s, and various studies on PM have been conducted. This study investigated the PM research topics and trends for papers (D=2,764) published in Research Information Sharing Service (RISS) using topic modeling based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). As a result, a total of 10 topics were identified in the whole papers, and the PM research topics were classified as 'PM reduction (Topic 1)', 'Government policy and management (Topic 2)', 'Characteristics of PM (Topic 3)', 'PM model (Topic 4)', 'Environmental education (Topic 5)', 'Bio (Topic 6)', 'Traffic (Topic 7)', 'Asian dust (Topic 8)', 'Indoor PM (Topic 9)', 'Human risk (Topic 10)'. In particular, the proportion of papers on topics 'Government policy and management (Topic 2)', 'PM model (Topic 4)', 'Environmental education (Topic 5)', and 'Bio (Topic 6)' to the toal number of papers increased over time (linear slope > 0). The results of this study provide the new literature review methodology related to particulate matter and the history and insight.
As the threat of natural disasters such as droughts, floods, forest fires, and landslides increases due to climate change, social demand for high-resolution soil moisture retrieval, such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), is also increasing. However, the domestic environment has a high proportion of mountainous topography, making it challenging to retrieve soil moisture from SAR data. This study evaluated the usability of Sentinel-1 SAR, which is applied with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique, to retrieve soil moisture. It was confirmed that the backscattering coefficient obtained from Sentinel-1 significantly correlated with soil moisture behavior, and the possibility of stand-alone use to correct vegetation effects without using auxiliary data observed from other satellites or observatories. However, there was a large difference in the characteristics of each site and topographic group. In particular, when the model learned on the mountain and at flat land cross-applied, the soil moisture could not be properly simulated. In addition, when the number of learning points was increased to solve this problem, the soil moisture retrieval model was smoothed. As a result, the overall correlation coefficient of all sites improved, but errors at individual sites gradually increased. Therefore, systematic research must be conducted in order to widely apply high-resolution SAR soil moisture data. It is expected that it can be effectively used in various fields if the scope of learning sites and application targets are specifically limited.
A drone is used to diagnose crop growth and to provide information through images in the agriculture field. In the case of using high spatial resolution drone images, growth information for each object can be produced. However, accurate object detection is required and adjacent objects should be efficiently classified. The purpose of this study is to develop a Chinese cabbage object detection algorithm using multispectral reflectance images observed from drone and computer vision techniques. Drone images were captured between 7 and 15 days after planting a Chinese cabbage from 2018 to 2020 years. The thresholds of object detection algorithm were set based on 2019 year, and the algorithm was evaluated based on images in 2018 and 2019 years. The vegetation area was classified using the characteristics of spectral reflectance. Then, morphology techniques such as dilatation, erosion, and image segmentation by considering the size of the object were applied to improve the object detection accuracy in the vegetation area. The precision of the developed object detection algorithm was over 95.19%, and the recall and accuracy were over 95.4% and 93.68%, respectively. The F1-Score of the algorithm was over 0.967 for 2 years. The location information about the center of the Chinese cabbage object extracted using the developed algorithm will be used as data to provide decision-making information during the growing season of crops.

To prepare an atmospheric correction model suitable for CAS500-4 (Compact Advanced Satellite 500-4), this letter examined an atmospheric correction experiment using Sentinel-2 images having similar spectral characteristics to CAS500-4. Studies to compare the atmospheric correction results depending on different Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data are rarely found. We conducted a comparison of Fast Line-of-sight Atmospheric Analysis of Spectral Hypercubes (FLAASH), Sen2Cor, and Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum - Vector (6SV) version 1.1 and 2.1, using Geo-Kompsat 2A (GK2A) Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI) and Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) AOD data. In this experiment, 6SV2.1 seemed more stable than others when considering the correlation matrices and the output images for each band and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI).

As the volume of marine hazardous and noxious substances (HNSs) transported in domestic and overseas seas increases, the risk of HNS spill accidents is gradually increasing. HNS leaked into the sea causes destruction of marine ecosystems, pollution of the marine environment, and human casualties. Secondary accidents accompanied by fire and explosion are possible. Therefore, various types of HNSs must be rapidly detected, and a control strategy suitable for the characteristics of each substance must be established. In this study, the ground HNS spill experiment process and application result of detection algorithms were presented based on hyperspectral remote sensing. For this, styrene was spilled in an outdoor pool in Brest, France, and simultaneous observation was performed through a hyperspectral sensor. Pure styrene and seawater spectra were extracted by applying principal component analysis (PCA) and the N-Findr method. In addition, pixels in hyperspectral image were classified with styrene and seawater by applying spectral matching techniques such as spectral distance similarity (SDS), spectral correlation similarity (SCS), spectral similarity value (SSV), and spectral angle mapper (SAM). As a result, the SDS and SSV techniques showed good styrene detection results, and the total extent of styrene was estimated to be approximately 1.03 m2. The study is expected to play a major role in marine HNS monitoring.
The remotely sensed data, such as satellite imagery and aerial photos, can be used to extract and detect some objects in the image through image interpretation and processing techniques. Significantly, the possibility for utilizing digital map updating and land monitoring has been increased through automatic object detection since spatial resolution of remotely sensed data has improved and technologies about deep learning have been developed. In this paper, we tried to extract plastic greenhouses into aerial orthophotos by using fully convolutional densely connected convolutional network (FC-DenseNet), one of the representative deep learning models for semantic segmentation. Then, a quantitative analysis of extraction results had performed. Using the farm map of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairsin Korea, training data was generated by labeling plastic greenhouses into Damyang and Miryang areas. And then, FC-DenseNet was trained through a training dataset. To apply the deep learning model in the remotely sensed imagery, instance norm, which can maintain the spectral characteristics of bands, was used as normalization. In addition, optimal weights for each band were determined by adding attention modules in the deep learning model. In the experiments, it was found that a deep learning model can extract plastic greenhouses. These results can be applied to digital map updating of Farm-map and landcover maps.

Accurate monitoring of snow cover is a key component for studying climate and global as well as for daily weather forecasting and snowmelt runoff modelling. The few observed data related to snowmelt was the major cause of difficulty in extracting snowmelt factors such as snow cover area, snow depth and depletion curve. Remote sensing technology is very effective to observe a wide area. Although many researchers have used remote sensing for snow observation, there were a few discussions on the characteristics of spatial and temporal variation. Snow cover maps were derived from NOAA AVHRR images for the winter seasons from 1997 to 2006. Distributed snow depth was mapped by overlapping between snow cover maps and interpolated snowfall maps from 69 meteorological observation stations. Model parameters (Snow Cover Area: SCA, snow depth, Snow cover Depletion Curve: SDC) were built for 7 major watersheds in South Korea. The decrease pattern of SCA for time (day) was expressed as exponentially decay function, and the determination coefficient was ranged from 0.46 to 0.88. The SCA decreased 70% to 100% from the maximum SCA when 10 days passed.
