Secondary users should sense the licensed spectrum bands in order to protect the primary users from interference. However, periodic and frequent sensing for immediate detection of primary users usually gives rise to much sensing overhead, and thus will quickly drain the battery as well as deteriorate the performance of a secondary user. To overcome such problems, we focus on the method reducing sensing overhead of each secondary user and propose a distributed fair sensing scheme that the multiple users within a certain area, so-called sensing zone, sense the spectrum bands in a fairly distributed manner and share the results among the users within respective sensing zone. The design of the frame structure for the proposal is also demonstrated while considering the sensing requirements for protecting primary users. The performance results by numerical analyses and computer simulations show that our proposed sensing scheme significantly reduces the sensing overhead of each user compared to the conventional sensing scheme and also satisfies the given sensing requirements for primary user protection.
In this paper, we make MAC protocol improvements for performance enhancement of multi-hop ad-hoc wireless networks. A node in ad-hoc wireless networks can transmit a packet only when the medium is available, and while a packet is being transmitted, no other nodes are allowed to transmit a packet if they are in carrier sensing range. Carrier sensing range can be divided into two disjoint areas of transmission range and carrier sensing zone(9), and we address the importance of the protocol behavior when a node is in carrier sensing zone. The characteristic of the carrier sensing zone is that a node can not know when the remaining time of the on-going transmission session expires or exactly when the media becomes available. Current MAC protocol does not behave in much different way between when a node is in transmission range and in carrier sensing zone. We have conducted a comprehensive simulation to study the performance improvements. The simulation results indicate that the performance is increased and the number of dropped packets due to collision is significantly reduced as much as a half.
TM data, which have better resolution in spatial and spectral than MSS data, were used for this study, and several Image Processing Techniques (IPT) were examined for finding the best IPT to fit to lineament extraction and mineralized zone mapping. The Ryeongnam area was selected as test area, because the area is one of major mineralized zones in Korea and its hydrothermal alteration zone is wider and deeper than other areas. The spatial filtering method is most optimum one for limeament extraction: that is, the directional spatial filtering is most efficient to detect N-S, E-W direction lineaments on the image, and the high boost filtering can be applied for mapping all direction lineaments. The ratio method was selected for detecting altered zone. It is possible to make several tens combinations in ratio with 7 bands of TM data, but considering spectral characteristics of each band of TM to the geological meterials and vegetation, the band 4/band 3(A), band 5/band 7(B), and B/A ratio methods were chosen among them. The 5/7 ratio image did not show clearly the altered area due to noise from vegetation cover, so the 4/3 ratio imae was used for trying to decrease the effect of vegetation. As a result the B/A ratio image showed quite nicely the altered zone of the test area. In conclusion, the spatial filtering is the best image processing techniques for lineament mapping, and the B/A ratio image in TM data is useful for the mineralized zone mapping.
Burgess?s concentric zone model is a famous theory in the geography of city. However, the zone border line drawing method was uncertain. We have developed the method of drawing the border using land use images.

In this paper, we propose a new energy efficient scheme which can prolong the life of sensor networks, it should be able to reduce the number of sensing. We use the concept of safe zone for manage the appropriate range of properties. We measure the distance between the sensed temperature value and the center of the zone, and calculate the next sensing interval based on this distance. We name our proposed scheme "VIS". To assess the performance of the proposed scheme the actual temperature data was collected using the sensor node. The algorithm was implemented through the programming and was evaluated in a variety of settings. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is to significantly reduce the number of sensing in terms of energy efficiency while having the ability to know the state of the sensor nodes periodically. Our VIS algorithm can be useful in applications which will require the ability of control to the temperature within a proper range.

Recently, cognitive radio technology has been spotlighted for the efficient use of limited frequency technology. The most important part of CR is to protect the incumbent user's communications. Therefore, CR user should be sensing the currently using channel and another hopping channel for sudden appearance of the Incumbent User. In this paper, we propose the cooperative channel sensing to protect the IU considering each CR user's remained power and sensing-zone, sense the spectrum bands in a fairly distributed manner and share the results among the users within respective sensing zone. Sensing scheme including inband sensing and outband sensing is utilized. The inband sensing is in charge of current using channel scanning while the outband sensing mainly cares about other channels. The performance results by computer simulations show that our sensing scheduling scheme reduces the number of sensing nodes and saves energy need to channel sensing.
Lineament is defined generally as a linear feature or pattern on interpretation of a satellite image and indicates the geological structures such as faults and fractures. For this reason, a lineament extraction and analysis using remote sensing images have been widely used for mapping large areas. The Gyeong-gang Fault is a NNE trending structure located in Gangwon-do and Kyeonggi-do district. However, a few geological researches on that fault have been carried out and its trace or continuity is ambiguous. In this study, we investigate the geologic features at Gyeong-gang Fault Zone using LANDSAT ETM+ satellite image and SRTM digital elevation model. In order to extract the characteristics of geologic features effectively, we transform the LANDSAT ETM+ image using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and create a shade relief from SRTM data with various illumination angles. The results show that it is possible to identify the dimensions and orientations of the geologic features at Gyeong-gang Fault Zone using remote sensing data. An aerial photograph interpretation and a field work will be future tasks for more accurate analysis in this area.

A remote sensing technique to identify trajectories of breaking waves in the surf zone using oblique digital nearshore videos is proposed. The noise arising from white foam induced by wave breaking has hindered accurate remote sensing of wave properties in the surf zone. For this reason, this paper focuses on image processing to remove the noise and wave trajectory identification essential for wave property estimation. The nearshore video imagery sampled at 3 Hz are used, covering length scale(100 m). Original image sequences are processed through image frame differencing and directional low-pass image filtering to remove the noise characterized by high frequencies in the video imagery. The extraction of individual wave crest features is conducted using a Radon transform-based line detection algorithm in the processed cross-shore image timestacks having a two-dimensional space-time domain. The number of valid wave crest trajectories identified corresponds to about 2/3 of waves recorded by the in-situ sensors.
Dengue Fever(DF) and Dengue haemorrhagic fever(DHF) has become a major international public health concern. Dengue Fever(DF) and Dengue haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is also still the major health problem of Thailand, although many campaigns against it have been conducted throughout the country. GIS and Remotely Sensed data are used to evaluate the relationships between socio-spatial, environmental factors/indicators and the incidences of viral diseases. The aim of the study is to identify the spatial risk factors in Dengue and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever in Sukhothai province, Thailand using statistical, spatial and GIS Modelling. Preliminary results demonstrated that physical factors derived from remotely sensed data could indicate variation in physical risk factors affecting DF and DHF. The present study emphasizes the potential of remotely sensed data and GIS in spatial factors affecting Dengue Risk Zone analysis. The relationship between land cover and the cases of incidence of DF and DHF by information value method revaluated that highest information value is obtained for Built-up area. A negative relationship was observed for the forest area. The relations between climate data and cases of incidence have shown high correlation with rainfall factors in rainy season but poor correlation with temperature and relative humidity. The present study explores the potential of remotely sensed data and GIS in spatial analysis of factors affecting Dengue epidemic, strong spatial analysis tools of GIS. The capabilities of GIS for analyst spatial factors influencing risk zone has made it possible to apply spatial statistical analysis in Disease risk zone.

SIMP is an international project funded by INTAS aimed at improving the information content, which can be inferred from multi-sensor satellite imagery of marine coastal areas. Scientific teams from Germany, UK, Portugal, and Russia focus on the development of novel tools for marine remote sensing of the coastal zone. In particular, the project teams' benefit from the fact that surface films may enhance the signatures of hydrodynamic processes such as plumes, internal waves, eddies, etc., on microwave, optical, and infrared imagery. The project's objectives are to develop a robust methodology for identifying slick-related phenomena/processes through their surface signatures and thereby, to improve the discrimination capabilities between slicks and other oceanic and atmospheric phenomena by taking into account information gained from satellite imagery quasi-simultaneously recorded at microwave, visible and IR wavelengths. The results of the two project years are summarized. Examples are given for the project’s web presentation, laboratory and field experiments, and of the analyses of various satellite data.
