  • Bypass air conditioning systems are divided into three types; an outdoor air bypass, a mixed air bypass and a return air bypass system. What makes the return air by pass system more effective is that it directs all of moist outdoor air through the cooling coil. The bypass air conditioning system can maintain indoor R.H (Relative Humidity) less than a conventional CAV (Constant Air Volume) air conditioning system by adjusting face and bypass dampers at part load. When a design sensible load (the ratio of sensible load to total sensible load) is 70 percent (at this time, RSHF (Room Sensible Heat Factor) . 0.7), indoor R.H was maintained 59 percent by the return air bypass system, but 65 percent by the conventional CAV air conditioning system (valve control system). The bypass air conditioning system can also improve IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) in many buildings where the number of air change is high.

  • Heat transfer characteristics were investigated for the falling film flowing down the outside of an electrically heated vertical tube. Water was used for the falling film, and its Reynolds number was varied in the range of 70~500. Because water is heated and evaporated as it flows down, both sensible and latent heat transfer should be considered. The effect of the surrounding air movement was investigated by changing the direction of the air injection; without air injection, parallel-flow, and counter-flow. For all cases, sensible teat transfer rate was almost linearly increased with the increasing film flow rate. It was found that the film heat transfer coefficient was hardly influenced by the parallel air flow. However, the counter-flow of air reduced the heat transfer coefficient, which might be caused by the uneven distribution or flooding of the film. At high heat flux, a sudden change of the film heat transfer coefficient was detected as the film flow rate reached the transition value. It is supposed that this phenomenon was caused by the change in the film flow pattern.

  • The atmospheric and oceanic influences on the air-sea thermal interaction in the East Sea (Japan Sea) are studied by means of an analytic model which is based on the heat budget of the ocean. By means of the model, the model, the annual variations of heat fluxes and air temperatures in the East Sea are analytically simulated. The model shows that the back radiation, the latent heat and the sensible heat increase with the warn water advection. The latent heat increases with the sea surface temperature (SST) but the back radiation and the sensible heat dcrease as the SST increases. In the East Sea, an increase of mean SST by 1.0$^{\circ}C$ yields an increase of mean air temperature by 1.2$^{\circ}C$. The heat storage in the ocean plays an important role in the annual variations of heat flux across the sea surface.

  • In this paper, a calculation method for fin efficiency of continuous fin is introduced. The continuous fin of in-line and staggered arrangement was divided into many sectors and fin efficiencies of each sectors were calculated by assuming that each sectors be the circular fins. To get the converged fin efficiency which is averaged by the each areas, the number of sectors was increased. The results were compared with equivalnet method by varying the aspect ratios in both cases of in-line and staggered tube arrangement and showed some differences of fin efficiencies.

  • Hybrid desiccant cooling system(HDCS) consists of desiccant rotor, regenerative evaporative cooler, heat pump and district heating hot water coil. In this study, TRNSYS and EES, dynamic and steady simulation programs were used for studying hybrid desiccant cooling system which is applied to an apartment house from June to August. The results show that power consumption of the hybrid desiccant cooling system is 70 kWh in June, 199 kWh in July and 241 kWh in August. Sensible and latent heats removed by the hybrid desiccant cooling system are 300 kWh, 301 kWh in June, 610 kWh, 858 kWh in July and 719 kWh, 1010 kWh in August. COP of the hybrid desiccant cooling system is 8.6 in June, 7.4 in July and 7.2 in August. COP of the hybrid desiccant cooling system decreases when latent heat load increases. Operation time of the system is 70 hours in June, 190 hours in July and 229 hours in August. Since the cooling load is largest in August, the operation time of August is longest for maintaining the indoor temperature at $26^{\circ}C$. Due to the characteristics of hybrid desiccant cooling system for efficiently handling both sensible and latent loads, this system can handle sensible and latent heat loads efficiently in summer.

  • This study compared fin-tube and parallel-flow heat pipes for their sensible heat exchange rate, heat recovery amount, and air-side pressure drop. Tests were done with different refrigerant charging rates of 40-60% vol. and air flow rates of 300-1,400. The sensible heat exchange rate was highest for both types of heat pipes at a working fluid charge of 40% vol. and low flow rate. For the parallel-flow heat pipe, the 60% vol. charge is too high and results in a low sensible heat exchange rate. The reason is that the thicker liquid film of the tube wall deteriorates the heat transfer effect. Hence, the optimal charging rate is 40 to 50% vol. The evaporator heat pipe has a larger air-side pressure drop than the condenser section heat pipe. The reason is considered to be condensation water arising from the evaporator surface. Compared to the fin-tube heat pipe, the parallel-flow heat pipe showed better performance with a working fluid charging rate of 48%, volume of 41%, and an air-side pressure drop about 37%.

  • Heat regenerator occupied by regenerative materials improves thermal efficiency of regenerative combustion system through the recovery of sensible heat of exhaust gases. By using one-dimensional two-phase fluid dynamics model, the unsteady thermal flow of regenerators with spherical particles were numerically analyzed to evaluate performance of ratio of waste heat recovery and temperature efficiency and to suggest optimized conditions of heat regenerator. It is predicted that exhaust gases temperature at regenerator outlet of 3.5$\times$10$^{6}$ kcal/hr heat regenerator is even lower than design condition and ratio of waste heat recovery is 75.8%.

  • To investigate the thermal environment over the summertime asphalt pavements, an automatic weather observation system was installed at a parking lot paved with asphalt to observe various meteorological parameters and surface temperature from July 1 to September 30, 2014. Since the number of rainy days in summer of 2014 particularly after the mid July is more than that of average data, a ratio of daily peak surface temperature above $45^{\circ}C$ was 28% which was lower than the average. The observational data about hourly average surface temperature and various heat balance factors at days where daily peak surface temperature is above $45^{\circ}C$ are as follows: An hour that had the daily maximum temperature was around 15 pm and the value was $49^{\circ}C$ approximately. Net shortwave radiation was the highest at 12pm as $800W/m^2$ and much radiation of $500W/m^2$ was absorbed at the ground between 11am and 17pm. Sensible heat that was delivered from the ground to the atmosphere was evaluated as $200W/m^2$ between 10am and 19pm. underground transfer heat up to $100W/m^2$ was measured as negative from 19pm to the next day 8am, which indicated the lower atmosphere was heated at night.

  • Evapotranspiration is an important factor in the energy interaction process between the surface and the air. Over a vegetable canopy, evapotranspiration was investigated by measuring the sensible heat flux, the soil heat flux and the net radiation flux. Evapotranspiration based on routine AWS data is in good agreement with that estimated from the energy balance equation except for weak wind shear less than $1s^{-1}$ and a cloudy period. Soil heat flux can be approximately to 10% of net radiation flux at the lower layer. When the slope of the saturation vapor pressure versus temperature curve ($de_s/dT$) is approximated to 1.5, the evapotranspiration can be described in function of the net radiation energy flux over Goheung bay wetland covered with the vegetable canopy, reeds.
