This study proposes a new control approach for efficient vibration suppression of two identical adjacent structures. The conventional control approach of two adjacent structures is to interconnect the two structures with passive, semi-active or active control devices. However, when the two adjacent structures are identical to each other, their dynamical behaviors such as frequency and damping properties are also the same. In this case, the interconnected control devices cannot exhibit the dissipative control forces on the both structures as expected since the relative displacements and velocities of the devices become close to zero. In other words, the interconnection method does not work for the twin structures as enough as expected. In order to solve this problem, we propose several new control approaches to effectively and efficiently reduce the identically-fluctuating responses of the adjacent structures with minimum control efforts. In order to demonstrate the proposed control systems, the proposed several control systems are optimally designed and their control performances are compared with that of the conventional optimal control system where each TMD(tuned mass damper) is installed in each structure for independent control purpose. The simulated results show that one of the proposed control systems(System 04) is able to guarantee enhanced control performance compared with the conventional system.
We propose a novel post-processing algorithm and its very-large-scale integration architecture that simultaneously uses the passive and active stereo vision information to improve the reliability of the three-dimensional disparity in a hybrid stereo vision system. The proposed architecture consists of four steps - left-right consistency checking, semi-2D hole filling, a tiny adaptive variance checking, and a 2D weighted median filter. The experimental results show that the error rate of the proposed algorithm (5.77%) is less than that of a raw disparity (10.12%) for a real-world camera image having a $1,280{\times}720$ resolution and maximum disparity of 256. Moreover, for the famous Middlebury stereo image sets, the proposed algorithm's error rate (8.30%) is also less than that of the raw disparity (13.7%). The proposed architecture is implemented on a single commercial field-programmable gate array using only 13.01% of slice resources, which achieves a rate of 60 fps for $1,280{\times}720$ stereo images with a disparity range of 256.
This paper presents a portable tele-assessment system designed for remote evaluation of the hypertonic elbow joint of neurologically impaired patients. A patient's upper limb was securely strapped to a portable limb-stretching device which is connected through Internet to a portable haptic device by which a clinician remotely moved the patient's elbow joint and felt the resistance from the patient. Elbow flexion angle and joint torques were measured from both master and slave devices and bilaterally fed back to their counterparts. In order to overcome problems associated with the network latency, two different tele-operation schemes were proposed depending on relative speed of tasks compared to the amount of time delay. For slow movement tasks, the bilateral tele-operation was achieved in real-time by designing control architectures after causality analysis. For fast movement tasks, we used a semi-real-time tele-operation scheme which provided the clinicians with stable and transparent feeling. The tele-assessment system was verified experimentally on patients with stroke. The devices were made portable and low cost, which makes it potentially more accessible to patients in remote areas.
This paper deals with vibration control of a small mount with MR(Magneto-Rheological) fluid as a functional fluid mount for precision equipment of automobiles. Damping and stiffness coefficients of the mount with MR fluid are changed by variations of the applied magnetic field strength. We present the robust control scheme, based on a conventional sliding mode control theory, for the design of a stable controller that is capable of vibration control due to various disturbances such as impact and periodic excitations, and is insensitive to dynamic properties of the mount. We got stable controller by using Lyapunov stability theory. The controller is then realized by using a semi-active control condition in simulations. Chattering problem of the sliding mode control is eliminated by saturation function instead of signum function. The sliding mode control with Lyapunov stability theory is superior to passive and Sky-Hook control in performance.
A family of smart tuned mass dampers (STMDs) with variable frequency and damping properties is analyzed under harmonic excitations and ground motions. Two types of STMDs are studied: one is realized by a semi-active independently variable stiffness (SAIVS) device and the other is realized by a pendulum with an adjustable length. Based on the feedback signal, the angle of the SAIVS device or the length of the pendulum is adjusted by using a servomotor such that the frequency of the STMD matches the dominant excitation frequency in real-time. Closed-form solutions are derived for the two types of STMDs under harmonic excitations and ground motions. Results indicate that a small damping ratio (zero damping is the best theoretically) and an appropriate mass ratio can produce significant reduction when compared to the case with no tuned mass damper. Experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical result of the smart pendulum TMD (SPTMD). Frequency tuning of the SPTMD is implemented through tracking and analyzing the signal of the excitation using a short time Fourier transformation (STFT) based control algorithm. It is found that the theoretical model can predict the structural responses well. Both the SAIVS STMD and the SPTMD can significantly attenuate the structural responses and outperform the conventional passive TMDs.
In the transition to a multipolar international system, the literature has focused on great power competition while little attention has been given to the strategic possibilities of smaller states. However, as a result of globalization, states are so closely interconnected that the primary strategies of even major powers are not to achieve zero-sum solutions but to create asymmetric dependency through which they can influence the behavior of other states and non-state actors. States are assisted in this effort by a variety of tools, including setting up institutions, direct economic influence and through building different forms of infrastructure connectivity networks. By discussing asymmetric dependency situations from the perspective of the great powers, the literature presents smaller states primarily as passive actors, paralyzed by their dependence on great powers. Our paper argues that interdependence allows smaller states to effectively influence larger actors and examines strategies from which smaller states can choose in order to influence the behavior of larger states. Despite an extremely asymmetric relationship between Myanmar and China, actors in Myanmar have sought to influence China's Myanmar policy. We examine a case study of the Myitsone Dam, including Myanmar's strategic aims, chosen strategy and limitations in maneuvering space. Semi-structured interviews with local decision-makers and stakeholders are conducted in order to portray the full picture. Our study concludes that further research on the influencing strategies of small states in response to asymmetric dependence can contribute to a better understanding of the interdependence of states.
The passivation (or deactivation) of a metal surface during oxide film formation has been quantitatively explored for a ferritic stainless steel by using dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (DEIS). For this purpose, the electrochemical impedance spectra were carefully examined as a function of applied potential in the active nose region of the potentiodynamic polarization curve, to separate the charge transfer resistance and oxide film resistance. From the discrepancy in the potential dependence between the experimental charge transfer resistance and the semi-empirically expected one, the degree of passivation could be quantitatively estimated. The sensitivity of passivation of the steel surface to anodic potential, which might be the measure of the quality of the oxide film formed under unit driving force or over-potential, decreased by 31% when 3.5 wt% NaCl was added to a 5 wt% $H_2SO_4$ solution.

This paper is concerned to constitute a semi-active realtime feedback vibration control system and evaluate it through experiments in order to control in realtime the vibration externally generated, specially on the bridges which is structurally flexible. For the experiment of vibration control, we built a model bridge structure of Seohae Grand Bridge in a 1/200 reduced form and inflicted El-centro wave on the model structure also in a reduced force considering the lab condition. The externally excited vibration was to be controled by placing a shear type MR damper vertically on the center of bridge span, and the response (displacement and acceleration) of structure was to be acquired by placing LVDT and Accelerometer at the same time. As for the experiment concerning controlling vibration, a realtime feedback vibration control experiments were performed under each different condition largely such as un-control, passive on/off control, Lyapunov stability theory control, and Clipped-optimal control. Its control performance under different condition was quantitatively evaluated in terms of the peak absolute displacements, the peak absolute accelerations and the power required for control on the center of span. The results of experiments proved that the Lyapunov control and clipped-iptimal control were effective to decrease the displacement and acceleration of the structure, and also to decrease the power consumption to a great extent. Finally, the semi-active realtime feedback vibration control system constituted in this research was proven to be an effective way to control and manage the vibration generated on bridge structure.
In an actual design, none of the structures with shear behaviors will be designed for torsional moments. Any failure or damages to roofs, infills, shear walls, and braces caused by an earthquake, will inevitably result in relocation of center of mass and rigidity of the structure. With these changes, the dynamic characteristics of structure could be changed during an earthquake at any moment. The main objective of this paper is to obtain the relationship between time-varying eccentricity of load and corner lateral displacement. In this study, various methods have been used to determine the structural response for time-varying lateral corner displacement. As will be seen below, some of the structural calculation methods result in a significant deviation from the actual results, although these methods include the interaction effects of modes. Controlling the lateral displacement of structure can be performed in different ways such as, passive dampers, friction dampers, semi-active systems including the MR damper and active Systems. Selecting and locating these control systems is very important to bring the maximum safety with minimum cost into the structure. According to this study will be show the relation between the corner lateral displacements of structure and time-varying eccentricity by different kind of methods during an earthquake. This study will show that the response of the structure at the corners due to an earthquake can be very destructive and because of changing the eccentricity of load, calculating the maximum possible response of system can be carried out by this method. Finally, some kind of systems must be used for controlling these displacements. The results shows that, the CQC, DSC and exact methods is comply each other but the results of Vanmark method is not comfortable for these kind of buildings.
