  • Under constant and cyclic axial compression, square composite short columns reinforced with Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) added with scrap rubber infilled inside steel tubes and with different types of concrete were cast and tested. The test is carried out to find the effectiveness of utilizing an aggregate manufactured from industrial waste and to address the problems associated with the need for alternative reinforcements along with waste management. The main testing parameters are the type of concrete, the effect of fiber inclusion, and the significance of rubber-infilled steel tubes. The failure modes of the columns and axial load-displacement curves of the steel tube-reinforced columns were all thoroughly investigated. According to the test results, all specimens failed due to compression failure with a longitudinal crack along the loading axis. The fiber-reinforced column specimens demonstrated improved ductility and energy absorption. In comparison to the normal-weight concrete columns, the lightweight concrete columns significantly improved the axial load-carrying capacity. The addition of basalt fiber to the columns significantly increased the yield stress and ultimate stress to 9.21%. The corresponding displacement at yield load and ultimate load was reduced to 10.36% and 28.79%, respectively. The precision of volumetric information regarding the obtained crack quantification, aggregates, and the fiber in concrete is studied in detail through image processing using MATLAB environment.

  • A self-setting calcium phosphate cement (CPC), consisting of tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCP A), reacts with water and hardens fast (30 min) to form hydroxyapatite (HA) under physiological conditions as the final product. Although this CPC is finding increasing use as a biomaterial, it is presently limited to low stress bearing applications because of its relatively low strength and highly brittle nature. Recently the mechanical properties of CPC reinforced with chopped carbon fiber have been reported.

  • Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites and ceramic matrix composites (CMC) which contain electrically conductive phases have been designed and fabricated to introduce the detection capability of damage/fracture detection into these materials. The composites were made electrically conductive by adding carbon and TiN particles into FRP and CMC, respectively. The resistance of the conductive FRP containing carbon particles showed almost linear response to strain and high sensitivity over a wide range of strains. After each load-unload cycle the FRP retained a residual resistance, which increased with applied maximum stress or strain. The FRP with carbon particles embedded in cement (mortar) specimens enabled micro-crack formation and propagation in the mortar to be detected in situ. The CMC materials exhibited not only sensitive response to the applied strain but also an increase in resistance with increasing number of load-unload cycles during cyclic load testing. These results show that it is possible to use these composites to detect and/or fracture in structural materials, which are required to monitor the healthiness or safety in industrial applications and public constructions.

  • In this study, a procedure for the economic design of reinforced concrete beams under several design constraints is outlined on the basis of discretized continuum-type optimality criteria (DCOC). The costs to be minimized involve those of concrete, reinforcing steel and formwork. The design constraints include limits on the maximum deflection in a given span, on bending and shear strengths, in addition to upper and lower bounds on design variables. An explicit mathematical derivation of optimality criteria is given based on the well known Kuhn-Tucker mecessary conditions, followed by an iterative procedure for designs when the design variables are the depth and the steel ratio. Self-weight of the spans is also included in the equilibrium equation of the real system and in the optimatlity criteria.

  • In the recent design of high ductile fiber-reinforced cementitious composite ECC, which exhibits tensile strain-hardening behavior in the hardened state, optimizing both processing mechanical properties for specific applications is critical. This study introduced a method to develop useful ECCs in field, which possess the different fluid properties to facilitate diverse types of processing (i.e., self-consolidating or spray processing). Control of rheological modulation was regarded as a key factor to allow the performance of the desired processing, while retaining the ductile material properties. To control the rheological properties of the composite, we first determined basic ECC compositon, which is based on micromechanics and steady-state cracking theory. The stability and consequent viscosity of suspensions were, then, mediated by optimizing dosages of chemical and mineral admixtures. The rheological properties altered by this approach were revealed to be effective in obtaining ECC hardened properties, allowing us to readily achieve the desired function of the fresh ECC.

  • In this study, a design process for reinforced concrete structures using the nonlinear FEM analysis is developed. Instead of using the nonlinear analysis to evaluate the required performance after design process, the nonlinear analysis is applied before designing the reinforcement arrangement inside the RC structures. An automatic reinforcement generator for computer aided reinforcement agreement is developed for this purpose. Based on a nonlinear FEM program for analyzing the reinforced concrete structure, a smart fictitious material model of steel, is proposed which can self-adjust the reinforcement to the required amount at the cracking location according to the load increment. Using this tool, the reinforcement ratio required at design load level can be decided automatically. In this paper, an example of RC beam with opening is used to verify the proposed process. Finally, a trial design process for a real size underground RC LNG tank is introduced.

  • Since the fiber reinforced polymeric (FRP) composites are considered in next generation of space transportation systems, reliable thermal expansion properties should be well provided for structural design of composite materials. To obtain accurate mechanical behaviors at a cryogenic temperature, precise strain measurement and calibration must be provided. In this work, apparent strains (or thermal output) of temperature self-compensated strain gages were deliberately investigated for epoxy, CTBN modified epoxy and carbon fabric composite system from room temperature to liquid nitrogen temperature. Also, fourth-order thermal output curves were presented for the further calibration. The results showed that the thermal output is heavily dependent on test materials and a large amount of apparent strains were observed for the polymer resins.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 5 weeks self-help management program developed by Kim et al. (2000-b) and reinforced with music therapy for post stroke patients. Method: This was pre-experimental study and the subjects were 14 post stroke hemiplegic patients at home who were registered at the Gunsan Health Center. The program was applied for five weeks and two hours for each session composed of the preparation step, the main step and the finishing step. The contents of the program were ROM exercise, daily activity training, risk factors and aftereffects, nutrition management and stress management. To collect data, all subjects were questioned before and after the application of the program. Collected data were analyzed through frequencies, percentages, Wilcoxen signed rank test and Cronbach's alpha using SPSS-WIN program. Result: After the application of the self-help management program, a statistically significant increase was observed in the subjects' ability to perform activities of daily living (p=.039), ability to perform instrumental activities of daily living (p=.005), self-efficacy (p=.001), self-care behavior (p=.001) and quality of life (p=.001), and a statistically significant decrease was observed in depression (p=.012). Conclusion: The present self-help management program was found to be helpful in improving the subjects' physical and psychological functions after they were attacked by stroke, so to be an effective nursing intervention strategy for post stoke patients. Future researches need to reinforce and materialize music therapy and to develop and apply a self-help management program that includes not only post stroke patients but also their families. In addition, it is necessary to expand the scope of subjects and apply follow-up management in order to continue self-help meetings.

  • In this paper, a method of self-organizing for fuzzy logic controller(FLC) through learning of the proper direction of coritrol is proposed. In case of designing a self-organizing FLC for unknown dynamic plants based on the gradient descent method, it is difficult to identify the desirable direction of the change of control inpul. in which the error would be decreased. To resolve this problem, we propose a method as fo1lows:at first, assign representative values for the direction of change of error with respect to control input to each partitioned region of the states, and then, learn the fuzzy control rules using the reinforced representative values through iterative trials. 'The proposed self-organizing FLC has simple structure and it is easy to design. The validity of the proposed method is proved by the computer simulation for an inverted pendulum system.
