  • The Russian poet A. C. Pushkin left more than a hundred self-portraits in his lifetime. These self-portraits are the subject of a special research project. Pushkin liked to sketch himself disguised in various shapes in his manuscripts. Besides Pushkin, many authors have portrayed themselves, but in terms of their quantity and fame, it is difficult to find self-portraits that transcended those which are as detailed and revealing as that of Pushkin's. Focusing on this point, this paper first examines the position of the poet's self-portraits in the context of the tradition of the self-portrait, as a painting genre full of romanticism as manifested and revealed in the 19th century. Subsequently, this article explains the meaning of the Pushkin's typical self-portraits in profile, which were mostly drawn in his manuscripts. Finally, in order to explore the philosophical implications contained in this poet's self-portraits, this paper attempts to read poet's self-portrait in comparison with Rembrandt's self-portrait, and Montaigne's Essais as well for a comprehensive comparison of the three entities.

  • The number of Frida Kahlo's works is 143, 55 of which are her own portraits. She spent a great deal of time on the production of her works, a large portion of which is taken up by her portraits. Art and creation by artist are the expressive process of artist's unconsciousness. Certain works express personal unconsciousness and collective, archetypal unconsciousness. These works evoke certain impressive image or unknown emotion in their mind impulsively. Artist could talk with their own work in this process. The producted symbolic images want to seek harmony with the artist's consciousness. This study has examined, from the viewpoint of analytical psychology, the psychological changes of Frida Kahlo by way of interpreting 4 of her own realistic portraits. These particular 4 works were finished in the most critical life time of Frida Kalho. We tried to find out what the purpose of her work would be. From the examination the following characteristics were gound. 1) Her portraits are not only concerned with her personal life and personal unconscious, but they also contain elements of the collective unconscious. 2) She experienced a psychological healing for herself in the process of transforming shocking events into painful portraits. 3) Her self portraits are the expression of the creative transformation she underwent.

  • This study investigated the ideal female beauty in advertisement images through the iconological comprehension of Renaissance portraits and explored the longitudinal change of the ideal female beauty in modern Korean society. A total of 146 cover images on Hyang-Jang magazine, which is the company magazine of AMORE PACIFIC Group, from 1972 to 2012 were selected as the data. These images were divided into 10-year units for analysis using iconological criteria, which were pose, shape of eyes and lip, and hairstyle. The way presenting the cover images on Hyang-Jang magazine had changed in order to emphasize female body, self-satisfaction and independence of female, and sexual attractiveness of female. The results of this study implied that the change of ideal female beauty had been affected by socio-cultural contexts of modern Korean society that has industrialized and democratized in a short period of time.

  • This study is to examine and compare the preference for occupation, reasons of preference for occupations, and confidence of occupations or future of them by analysing 'self-portraits after 20 years' of science gifted/talented. The level of preference for talent-related occupations of gifted/talented students was merely 29.2, whereas that for medical world was 32.6%(the highest level). 74% of them had confidence of that their own dream or hope come true. Main reasons of selecting occupation for the future were 'service for social-national development', and 'convenience for life'. It is necessary to endeavor nationally, socially, and educationally to develop interest and preference of the science gifted/talented for science-related occupations, and confidence for the future, and contribute talents of them to nation.

  • Painting is well regarded as a stratified structure by the conservators and restorers. Hence, the scientific methods have been developed for the study of the interal layer of paintings. Examples of such methods are X-ray, infra-red, and ultra-violet photography. A more direct method is to look at the painting in cross section under the microscope and to analyze pigments using an electron probe X-ray micro analyzer(EPMA).In this research, I study and analyze twenty two Korean paintings of self-portraits including the first oil painting of Hui Dong Koh's self-portrait stored in the museum of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, employing these scientific techniques. The small fragments taken from the ground layers of the early oil paintings(1915∼1942)are analyzed using the EPMA. According to their main materials, the ground layers can be classified into five types ; 1. Lead white layer and double layer of calcium carbonate and lead white, 2. Zinc white with some mixiture of lead white, 3.Titanium white with some barium white, 4. Barium white, 5.Double layer of titanium white and zinc white.

  • In this study, the dynamic instabilities of a nonlinear elastic system subjected to follower force are investigated. The two-degree-of-freedom double pendulum model with nonlinear geometry, cubic spring, and linear viscous damping is used for the study. The constant and periodic follower forces are considered. The chaotic nature of the system is identified using the standard methods, such as time histories, phase portraits, and Poincare maps, etc.. The responses are chaotic and unpredictable due to the sensitivity to initial conditions. The sensitivities to parameters, such as geometric initial imperfections, magnitude of follower force, and viscous damping, etc. is analysed. The strange attractors in Poincare map have the self-similar fractal geometry. Dynamic buckling loads are computed for various parameters, where the loads are changed drastically for the small change of parameters.
