  • The self-assembled monolayers of alkane derivatives with sulfur containing head groups on gold substrates have been widely examined recently, since the binding between S atoms and Au surface is strong. The viologen has been widely investigated their well-behaved electrochemistry including electron transfer mediation, the surface-enhanced of the adsorption and the behavior of supramolecular assemblies at electrode surfaces in theses and various studies. Yiologen monolayers are formed onto QCM by self-assembly method. We studied the relationship of electron transfer from changing the anions in 0.1 M NaCl and NaClO$_4$ electrolyte solution. The EQCM measurements revealed the anions transfer during reduction and oxidation, respectively From the EQCM data, the well-defined shape peaks were nearly equal charges by cyclic voltammetry.

  • Molecular self-assembled of surfactant viologens are recently interesting because they can be from functional electrodes as well as micelle assemblies which can be profitably utilized for display devices, electrochemical studies and electrocatalysis as electron acceptor or electron mediator. The electrochemical behavior of self-assembled viologen monolayer on Au electrode surface has been investigated with QCM which has been known as nano-gram order mass detector. A monolayer of viologen is immobilized on the gold electrode surface and the normal potentials corresponding to the to the successive one-electron transfer processes of the viologen actives are two peaks in 0.1mol/l phosphate buffer solution respectively. These result suggest that the viologen SAMs are stable and well-behaved monolayers.

  • Cellular DNA in prokaryotes is organized in nucleic acid-protein self-assemblies referred to as the nucleoid. The physical forces responsible for its stability inside the poor solvent properties of the cytoplasm and their functional implications are not understood. Studies on the organisation and functioning of the cytosol of cells largely rely on experimental protocols performed in highly dilute solutions using biochemically purified molecules, which is not a reliable substitute for the situation existing in vivo. Our current research interest is focused on the characterization of biological and physical forces determining the compaction and phase separation of DNA in Escherichia coli cytoplasm. We have emphasized the effect of excluded volume in solutions with high macromolecular concentrations (macromolecular crowding) upon self-association patterns of reactions. The prokaryotic cytosol was simulated by addition of inert polymer polyethylene glycol (PEG) (average molecular weight 20000), as an agent which afterwards facilitates the self-association of macromolecules. Fluorescence microscopy was used for direct visualization of nucleoids in intact cells, after staining with DAPI (4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride). Addition of the crowding agent PEG 20,000, in increasing concentrations generated progressively enhanced nucleoid compaction, the effect being stronger in the presence of 0.2 M NaCl and 5 mM MgCl$\_$2/. Under these conditions, the nucleoids were compacted to volumes of around 2 ㎛$\^$3/ or comparable sizes with that of living cells.

  • To develop a 100 hp high temperature superconducting(HTS) motor with high efficiency first in Korea, we fabricated a HTS field winding and test. HTS field winding is composed of sixteen HTS race track shaped coils wound with stainless steel-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor by react and wind fabrication method. Nomex paper was used for electrical insulation. Each of four magnet pole assemblies was constructed with four double pancake sub-coils, mechanically stacked and electrically in series. Four magnet assemblies were fixed on an aluminum support structure to make effective heat transfer. The Critical current (Ic) was 41.5A at 77K and self field. However the lowest Ic value of sub-coils was 35A. Joule heat generated by each joints between sub-coils was lower than 1mW at 77K and 34A. And Joule heat generated by the joints between field coils was lower than 10mW at 77K and 34A. Joule heat of the whole field winding was 1W at 77K and 32A. And so, the lowest Ic value of sub-coils was more important than Joule heats generated by all joints. The operating current must be lower than the lowest Ic of all the sub-coils. In this paper, design, construction and testing of HTS field winding, Joule heat generated by the joints, and operating current were discussed.

  • We have developed magnetically controllable gold nanoparticles by synthesizing superparamagnetic $Fe_3O_4$ core/gold shell nanoparticles. The core/shell particles have the capability of forming gold 1D chains in the presence of an external magnetic field. Here we demonstrate dynamic and reversible self-assembly of the gold 1D chain structures in an aqueous solution without any templates or physical or chemical attachment. The spatial configuration of gold chains can be arbitrarily manipulated by controlling the direction of a magnetic field. This technique can provide arbitrary manipulation of gold 1D chains for fabrication purpose. To demonstrate this capability, we present a technique for immobilization of the gold particle chains on a glass substrate.

  • A fluorescent nucleoside analogue, $^AC$, featuring two non-complementary nucleobases linked through an ethynyl group, was synthesized. The extended ${\pi}$-conjugation imparts $^AC$ with red-shifted absorbance (relative to adenine and cytosine) and pale-blue fluorescence. It spontaneously forms nanoparticles, which exhibit considerably enhanced fluorescence, without the help of any additional stabilizing agent. The DMSO/water ratio was an important factor influencing the construction of the NPs. X-ray crystallography confirmed the structure of $^AC$; dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the existence of the nanoparticles.

  • This paper presents the mostortant developments implemented in the APOLLO2 spectral code since its last general presentation at the 1999 M&C conference in Madrid. APOLLO2 has been provided with new capabilities in the domain of cross section self-shielding, including mixture effects and transfer matrix self-shielding, new or improved flux solvers (CPM for RZ geometry, heterogeneous cells for short MOC and the linear-surface scheme for long MOC), improved acceleration techniques ($DP_1$), that are also applied to thermal and external iterations, and a number of sophisticated modules and tools to help user calculations. The method of characteristics, which took over the collision probability method as the main flux solver of the code, allows for whole core two-dimensional heterogeneous calculations. A flux reconstruction technique leads to fast albeit accurate solutions used for industrial applications. The APOLLO2 code has been integrated (APOLLO2-A) within the $ARCADIA^{(R)}$ reactor code system of AREVA as cross section generator for PWR and BWR fuel assemblies. APOLLO2 is also extensively used by Electricite de France within its reactor calculation chain. A number of numerical examples are presented to illustrate APOLLO2 accuracy by comparison to Monte Carlo reference calculations. Results of the validation program are compared to the measured values on power plants and critical experiments.

  • Nanomaterials have emerged as new building blocks to construct light energy harvesting assemblies. Size dependent properties provide the basis for developing new and effective systems with semiconductor nanoparticles, quantized charging effects in metal nanoparticle or their combinations in 2 and 3 dimensions for expanding the possibility of developing new strategies for photovoltaic system. As top-down approach, we developed a simple and effective method for the large scale formation of self-assembled Cu(In,Ga)$Se_2$ (CIGS) nanostructures by ion beam irradiation. The compositional changes and morphological evolution were observed as a function of the irradiation time. As the ion irradiation time increased, the nano-dots were transformed into a nano-ridge structure due to the difference in the sputtering yields and diffusion rates of each element and the competition between sputtering and diffusion processes during irradiation. As bottom-up approach, we developed the growth of CIGS nanowires using thermal-chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Vapor-phase synthesis is probably the most extensively explored approach to the formation of 1D nanostructures such as whiskers, nanorods, and nanowires. However, unlike binary or ternary chalcogenides, the synthesis of quaternary CIGS nanostructures is challenging because of the difficulty in controlling the stoichiometry and phase structure. We introduced a method for synthesis of the single crystalline CIGS nanowires in the form of chalcopyrite using thermal-CVD without catalyst. It was confirmed that the CIGS nanowires are epitaxially grown on a sapphire substrate, having a length ranged from 3 to 100 micrometers and a diameter from 30 to 500 nm.
