Nanoscale Islands of the Self Assembled Monolayer of Alkanethiol

  • Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the structure and stability of a nanoscale self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of alkanethiol on a gold (111) surface. The tilt angle and orientational order of the alkyl chains in the SAM island were examined by systematically varying the size of the island. The chain length dependence of the SAM island was examined by considering alkanethiols containing 12, 16, 20, and 24 carbon atoms. The minimum diameter of SAM islands made from 1-tetracosanethiol, 1-ecosanethiol, 1-hexadecanethiol and 1-dodecanethiol were 2.29, 1.9, 4.7 and 4.76 nm, respectively. These set the ultimate resolution that can be patterned by soft nanolithography. As the length of alkanethiol increases, the SAM islands became more ordered in both orientation and conformation of the alkyl chains.

Characteristics of Electrowetting of Self-assembled Monolayer and Z-Tetraol Film

  • A study of electrowetting using an Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and Z- Tetraol 2000 perfluoropolyether lubricant as hydrophobic layers on Si and $SiO_2$ wafer was performed. The $SiO_2$ layer used as insulating layer was thermally grown on the silicon wafer to a thickness of 220-230 nm. The results demonstrated that the contact angle decreased from $100^{\circ}$ to $80^{\circ}$ at 28 V applied potential on $SiO_2$ wafer coated with OTS and the contact angle appeared to be reversible. However, the contact angle on the $SiO_2$ wafer coated with Z- Tetraol 2000 was not observable at 28 V applied potential. Furthermore, the contact angle on the Si wafer coated with OTS or Z- Tetraol 2000 appeared to be irreversible due to the generation of electrolysis in the droplet. It is concluded that it is feasible to use SAM as a hydrophobic layer in electrowetting applications.

Investigation of the electrode reaction of cytochrome c and pyrroliquinoline quinone at self-assembled monolayers of amino acid

  • Self-Assembled monolayers of carboxyl-terminated alkanethiols, which is negatively charged in pH 7.0, were usually used to facilitate the electron transfer between the positively charged protein and the electrode. In case of L-cysteine, as it has both positive and negative group, it can be a candidate for a new modifier to facilitate positively charged protein or negatively charged protein. Our investigation of L-cysteine shows that the electron transfer occurs successfully to both cytochrome c (cyt. c) and pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ). By using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dime-thlyaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC), we made a covalent bond between cyt. c and monolayer. Then PQQ was electrostatically adsorbed to the same monolayer. Cyclic voltammograms show that both molecules do not interfere each other and electron transfer is appreciable.

  • We have applied self-assembled monolayer to make high performance and stable OTFT on the organic gate dielectric. The ${\beta}$-phenethyltrichlorosilane (SAM) was coated on the organic gate dielectric and then active layer was printed. Significant improvements in on-currents and threshold voltage shift were achieved for the SAM treated devices compared to device without SAM.

  • We investigated mechanochemical radical, which is concomitant with chemical lift-off lithography(CLL), on the self-assembled monolayer(SAM)/electrodes and a polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) using a colorimetric and a spectroscopic method. The 11-mercaptoundecanol(MUO)/Au or the 11-hydroxyundecylphosphonic acid (HUPA)/ITO were contacted with bare or activated PDMS. After contact, the each of SAM/substrates and the PDMS were immersed in a 2,2 Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical scavenger. The color of the DPPH exposed to the PDMS was changed from purple to yellow and the absorbance decreased definitely at 515 nm wavelength. The SAM/substrates, however, have caused small changes in spectroscopic property, indicating no existence of radical species. We concluded that mechanochemical radicals were formed by homolytic cleavage of PDMS molecules upon external force and hardly transferred on the SAM/substrates.

Effect of self-assembled monolayer and aluminum oxide ALD film on a PMMA substrate

  • The antireflective (AR) coated poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) substrate was deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) to improve hydrophobicity and mechano-chemical properties of organic thin films. The water contact angles (WCA) were tested to characterize the surface wettability of SAM octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) films. Results showed that a contact angle of $105.9^{\circ}$ was obtained for the SAM films with an annealing process, and the highest WCA of $120^{\circ}$ was achieved for the films prepared by the SAM and ALD multi-process. The surface morphology of the SAM films with different assembly times and varying number of ALD cycles was obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The maximum light transmittance for the SAM films on the PMMA substrate reached 99.9% at a wavelength of 450 nm. It was found that the SAM surfaces were not affected at all by the ALD process.

Superb Mechanical Stability of n-Octadecyltriethoxysilane Monolayer Due to Direct Chemical Bonds between Silane Headgroups and Mica Surface: Part I

  • It is still controversial where the improved stability of n-octadecyltriethoxysilane self-assembled monolayer (OTE SAM) on plasma-pretreated mica surface exactly originates from. To date, it has been well known that the extensive cross-polymerization between silane head-groups is a crucial factor for the outstanding mechanical strength of the monolayer. However, this study clearly showed that the stability comes not only from the cross-links but also, far more importantly, from the direct chemical bonds between silane headgroups and mica surface. To examine this phenomenon, n-octadecyltrichlorosilane monolayers were self-assembled on both untreated and plasma treated mica surfaces, and their adhesion properties at various physical conditions (relative humidity, high stress, and contact repetition) were investigated and compared through the use of the surface forces apparatus technique. It revealed that, in highly humid conditions (>90%RH), there is a substantial difference of stability between untreated and plasma treated cases and the plasma treated surface is mechanically much more stable. It obviously proves that the extensive chemical bonds indeed exist between silane head-groups and plasma treated mica surface and dramatically improve the mechanical stability of the OTE monolayer-coated mica substrate.

Development of Surface Plasmon Resonance Immunosensor through Metal Ion Affinity and Mixed Self-Assembled Monolayer

  • An immunosensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) with enhanced performance was developed through a mixed self-assembled monolayer. A mixture of 16-mercaptohexadecanic acid (16-MHA) and 1-undecanethiol with various molar ratios was self-assembled on gold (Au) surface and the carboxylic acid groups of 16-MHA were then coordinated to Zn ions by exposing the substrate to an ethanolic solution of $Zn(NO_3)_2\cdot 6H_2O$. The antibody was immobilized on the SPR surface by exposing the functionalized substrate to the desired solution of antibody in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) molecules. The film formation in series was confirmed by SPR and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The functionalized surface was applied to develop an SPR immunosensor for detecting human serum albumin (HSA) and the estimated detection limit (DL) was 4.27 nM. The limit value concentration can be well measured between ill and healthy conditions.

콜로이드 입자의 자기 배열성을 이용한 Monolayer 형성에 관한 연구 (Process Development of Self-Assembled Monolayers(SAMs) of Colloidal Particles)

  • $St\"{o}ber$ process를 이용하여 단분산 콜로이드 실리카를 제조하였다. 초기물질인 TEOS(Tetraethylorthosilicate)와 $NH_4OH$, 에탄올 및 증류수의 함유량을 조절하여 100 nm급, 200 nm급, 300 nm급 크기의 단분산 실리카 입자를 제조할 수 있었고, 제조된 실리카 입자는 Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) 및 laser scattering particle analyzer를 통해 관찰하였다. Dipcoating 공정을 이용하여 제조된 300 nm 크기의 콜로이드 실리카의 자기 배열성(self-assembly) 형성에 관한 연구를 진행하였다. 다양한 코팅 공정 변수(표면장력, 표면전하, 입자의 함유량)의 조절을 통하여 dip coating시에 자기 배열성 단층막(monolayer)을 형성해 낼 수 있는 조건을 최적화하였고, SEM으로 관찰해 본 결과, 최적 조건 상태에서 비교적 넓은 영역 (1.5 mm ${\times}$ 1.5 mm)에서 hexagonally ordered packing된 콜로이드 입자 결정 단층막을 얻을 수 있었다.
