Purpose: This study aimed to identify the influences of parental neglect, national identity, and self-resiliency of multicultural adolescents on school adaptation. Methods: Participants are multicultural adolescents in the 4th year (2014) of the multicultural adolescents panel survey. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS 22.0 program. Results: Self-resiliency was the most influential factor on school adaptation of multicultural adolescents, followed by parental neglect, and national identity, mother's Korean reading ability, multicultural adolescents' speaking ability, city size, mother's education, and mother's speaking ability. Conclusion: Multicultural families who had an experience of parental neglect should be selected and those parents need to be educated about the appropriate parenting method to improve the school adaptation of multicultural adolescents. In addition, the school adaptation improvement program should be developed and provided to strengthen the national identity and self-resiliency of multicultural adolescents.
Objective: This study examined the mediating roles of preschoolers' self-regulation in the relationship between maternal parenting behaviors and preschoolers' excessive immersion in smartphones. Methods: A total of 268 mothers of preschoolers responded to questionnaires on three research variables. Data were analyzed by correlation analyses and regression analyses. Results: First, maternal warmth/encouragement was negatively related to preschoolers' excessive immersion in smartphones, while maternal overprotectiveness/permission and rejection/neglect were positively related to preschoolers' excessive immersion in smartphones. Second, maternal warmth/encouragement and limit setting were positively linked to preschoolers' self-regulation, but maternal overprotectiveness/permission and rejection/neglect were negatively linked to preschoolers' self-regulation. Third, preschoolers' self-regulation was negatively associated with their excessive immersion in smartphones. Finally, preschoolers' self-regulation fully mediated the relationship between maternal warmth/encouragement and preschoolers' excessive immersion in smartphones, and preschoolers' self-regulation partially mediated the relationship between maternal overprotectiveness/permission, rejection/neglect and preschoolers' excessive immersion in smartphones. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study suggest that positive maternal parenting behaviors and preschoolers' effective self-regulation are important in order to decrease preschoolers' smartphone overuse. These findings provide empirical evidence to develop programs for prevention and intervention of preschoolers' smartphone addiction.
This study examined the effect of parents' neglect behavior and children's irrational beliefs on children's anger expression style. The participants were 379 5th and 6th grade elementary school children. The major findings were as follows. Children tended to perceive higher levels of their parents' cognitive and emotional neglect than physical and home environmental neglect. Boys perceived higher levels of their parents' physical, supervisory and home environmental neglect than girls, and girls showed higher level of excessively self-expecting belief than boys. There were statistically significant correlations between the parents' neglect behavior, their child's irrational beliefs and anger expression style. A regression analysis showed that parents' physical and cognitive neglect were predictors of children's anger control. Children's excessive apprehension and avoidance beliefs were the best predictors of children's anger-in, while children's deterministic belief was the best predictor of children's anger-out. Parents' physical neglect behavior appeared to be powerful predictor.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the experiences of neglect on adolescent smart phone dependency, exploring the pathways through self-resilience and alienation. Methods: This study utilized the 7th wave data from the Korean Child Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS), and the sample included 1,805 participants with no missing data. The data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0 programs. Results: First, the experiences of neglect directly affected adolescent smart phone dependency. Second, the experiences of neglect indirectly affect smart phone dependency partially mediated by self resilience and alienation. Conclusions: The ways to prevent adolescent smart phone dependency were discussed.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of child neglect and abuse by parents on school adjustment of school-aged children focusing on mediating effect of school-aged children's self-awareness and peer attachment. For this purpose, we analyzed the data of fourth wave Korean Child-Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS) including parents' child neglect and abuse, school-aged children's school adjustment, self-awareness and peer attachment. A total of 2,378 children and their parents using structural equation model of mediating effects responded to the survey. Measurement model and structure model had favorable goodness of fit and the results of structure models on each path were as follows. First, school-aged children's school adaption had negative correlations with parent's child neglect and abuse, but positive correlations with their self-awareness and peer attachment. Second, parent's child neglect and abuse influenced on school-aged children's school adjustment by partial mediators, their self-awareness and peer attachment. These findings showed practical way to increase school-aged children's self-awareness and positive peer attachment.

This study aimed to analyze the effects of child abuse and neglect on male·female high school students and the moderating roles of peer attachment and closeness to teachers in the process. By using the second to the seventh yearsʼ data of 4th grade elementary school student panel participating in the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS), the study calculated descriptive statistics and performed hierarchical regressions. The main results of this study were as follows. First, for male high school students, as each level of child abuse, peer attachment, and closeness to teachers was higher, the level of ego-resilience was higher. However, as the level of child neglect was higher, the level of ego-resilience was lower. For female high school students, as the level of child neglect was higher, the level of ego-resilience was lower, while each level of peer attachment and closeness to teachers was higher, the level of ego-resilience was higher. In addition, for only male high school students, peer attachment moderated the effect of child abuse on ego-resilience. On the other hands, for both male and female high school students, as the level of child abuse and neglect were higher, the level of self-esteem was lower, while each level of peer attachment and closeness to teachers was higher, the level of self-esteem was higher. Moreover, for only female high school students, peer attachment moderated the effects of child abuse and neglect on self-esteem.
This study aims to analyze gender differences in the prevalence of and risk factors for self-neglect among the elderly in South Korea. In order to investigate the differences between male and female elderly group, we compared 793 elderly men and 1,089 women from the data "Research on the Healthy Aging and Well-being of the Elderly" conducted in 2018. First, t-test and ${\chi}^2$-test and multiple regression analysis identified that gender differences in the prevalence of elder self-neglect was not statistically significant. Second, There are differences in risk factors affecting self-neglect between genders. age and class(perception) are the factors only affecting men. Income(monthly), having-religion, living-alone, satisfaction with life, social network are the ones only affecting women. Third, the risk factors for both men and women are depression and social support(public support). It is notable that we verify the empirical evidence supporting the hypothesis that risk factors for elder self-neglect may exist differently according to gender. In particular, gender characteristics revealed in this study can be reasonably explained through exchange theory and feminist theory. Therefore, we emphasize that the policy approach should be done depending on the gender of the elderly, and that the social safety net more paying attention to the depression of the elderly should be strengthened.
In this paper, the effects of parental neglect and abuse on school adjustment mediated by social withdrawal in adolescents were examined using a sample of 2,163 second grade middle school students(1,096 boys and 1,067 girls) from the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS) data set. All research variables were measured using self-reported questionnaires. They were analyzed by means of Structural Equation Modeling. The results indicated that parents' abuse had no direct effect, but there was an indirect effect on adolescents' school adjustment mediated by adolescents' social withdrawal. Parental neglect had a direct effect on adolescents' school adjustment and also had an indirect effect on adolescents' school adjustment mediated by social withdrawal. The results indicate that parental neglect is a more significant contributor than adolescents' social withdrawal on adolescents' school adjustment. The results of this study show that parenting attitude, more specifically parental neglect, tend to be more important factors on school adjustment compared to adolescents' psychological problems, such as social withdrawal in adolescence. Taken together, these findings suggest that interventions aimed at improving parental neglect and adolescents' social withdrawal need to be emphasized if adolescents are to better adjust to school life.
Since the problems of the aged became a social issue recently, this study recognized elder abuse as a serious phenomenon among the problems of the aged in a dimension of against humanity and intended to conduct research by classifying elder abuse into certain types. This study used the literature research method and executed theoretical research on the basis of the types of elder abuse defined by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, economic abuse, neglect, self-neglect, abandonment were addressed as the types of elder abuse. Consequently, this study classified elder abuse as seven types which had close relationships with each other and formed the academic bassis for preparing effective prevention and coping method of elder abuse.
Recently, child abuse is mentioned in revised Child Welfare Law, on the other hand, elder abuse is not yet recognized as a social problem and little addressed in the field of social service. Like this, elder abuse has gotten less public and professional attention than other areas within the family abuse field. Despite the lack of attention to elder abuse, the number of elder abuse reports and incidents is likely to increase in the future. Based on the recognition that current effort and approach to elder abuse is not appropriate, this study attemped to briefly review laws and programs addressing elder abuse in the United States which have shaped in other contries. In the United States where various laws and programs that address elder abuse exit, there are incresing arguments that addressing elder abuse in the area of social service rather than in the criminal justice systems is more desirable. Because the most common form of elder abuse is not physical abuse but neglect including self-neglect. Self-neglect and neglect caused by caregivers' burden can not be addressed through criminal justice systems appropriately. From these experiences of the United States, the implications for policy, programs, and practice aimed at intervening elder abuse were discussed.
