A Study on the Effect of the Heeled and Trimmed Conditions on Propulsive Performance of VLCC (대형유조선의 저항추진성능에 미치는 자세변화의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • In recent years, many environmentally disastrous maritime accidents resulted from oil or fuel spills from damaged vessels. The situation becomes worse especially when the early counter treatment is not prompt enough. To properly handle this type of accidents and prevent further disasters, the propulsive performance of damaged vessels must be better understood for salvage operations, as well as for containing oil spills while the vessels are being towed or self-propelled. Until now, many hydrodynamic studies have focused on the propulsive performance of undamaged vessels but only a few studies on that of damaged vessels. in this paper, both experimental and computational methods are used to study the propulsive performance of a VLCC in heeled and/or trimmed conditions. For experimental studies, measurement systems should be modified to adapt to the variations of attitude of a damaged vessel. For numerical studies, CFD programs should be also extended to be applied to asymmetrically floating conditions.

  • This paper deals with friction-induced vibration of disc brake system under constact friction coefficient. A linear, finite element model to represent the floating caliper disc brake system is proposed. The complex eigenvalues are used to investigate the dynamic stability and in order to verify simulations which are based on the FEM model, The comparison of experimental and analytical results shows a good agreement and the analysis indicates that mode coupling due to friction force and geometric instability is responsible fur disc brake squeal. And the Front brake system reduced the squeal noise using design of experiment method(DOE). This helped to validate the FEM model and establish confidence in the simulation results. Also they may be useful during real disk brake model.

  • The flushing is important to maintain good water quality in water main. It is a technique of using water velocity to remove sediments in water distribution system. The variety of water quality problems can occur in a distribution system, so too can a variety of benefits be gained by system flushing. In order to effectively perform the flushing, the contaminants to be removed to set up and it can be solved, it is necessary to ensure the proper flow rate. In this study, the removal of contaminants present in the inner water pipe attached loose deposits such as fine particles of granular activated carbon, sand and iron corrosion product sought to derive flow rates. Thus, the constant observation of using pilot plant scale water distribution plant for the movement of floating characteristics of particles were assessed.

  • This paper describes an implementation of a single phase PWM ac/dc converter whose control scheme can be directly applied to the rectification of ac traction system. Power circuit using self-commutated switching devices(GTO) provides input power factor correction with dc voltage regulation. Effective compensation of load variations and line disturbance can be accomplished by real time instantaneous control of ac input current and dc link voltage using 32 bit floating point DSP. Parallel operation of two converters reduces the input line current ripple. Experimental results of the two parallel converter system are shown in the 20KW range for the verification of the system.

  • The main functions of oil booms are to prevent spreading of the oil slick and to increase the recovering efficiency of oil skimmers. The oil-containment capability of a floating boom on an open sea is affected by environmental parameters such as waves, currents and winds, as well as the motion characteristics of a boom section. In this study, a series of tests were conducted for three kinds of booms (internal foam type, air inflatable type, self-expanded type) at the open sea off Yosu, and the results are presented. Motion characteristics and oversplashing phenomenon were observed for each boom in different environmental conditions. And the tension exerted on towing line of the boom was also measured with a systematic varitation of towing speeds and gap ratios.

Study of central buckle effects on flutter of long-span suspension bridges

  • To investigate the effects of central buckles on the dynamic behavior and flutter stability of long-span suspension bridges, four different connection options between the main cable and the girder near the mid-span position of the Aizhai Bridge were studied. Based on the flutter derivatives obtained from wind tunnel tests, formulations of self-excited forces in the time domain were obtained using a nonlinear least square fitting method and a time-domain flutter analysis was realized. Subsequently, the influences of the central buckles on the critical flutter velocity, flutter frequency, and three-dimensional flutter states of the bridge were investigated. The results show that the central buckles can significantly increase the frequency of the longitudinal floating mode of the bridge and have greater influence on the frequencies of the asymmetric lateral bending mode and asymmetric torsion mode than on that of the symmetric ones. As such, the central buckles have small impact on the critical flutter velocity due to that the flutter mode of the Aizhai Bridge was essentially the symmetric torsion mode coupled with the symmetric vertical mode. However, the central buckles have certain impact on the flutter mode and the three-dimensional flutter states of the bridge. In addition, it is found that the phenomenon of complex beat vibrations (called intermittent flutter phenomenon) appeared in the flutter state of the bridge when the structural damping is 0 or very low.

  • Recently, the scaling of conventional planar NAND flash devices is facing its limits by decreasing numbers of electron stored in the floating gate and increasing difficulties in patterning. Three-dimensional vertical NAND devices have been proposed to overcome these issues. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is the most promising method to deposit charge trap layer of vertical NAND devices, SiN, with excellent quality due to not only its self-limiting growth characteristics but also low process temperature. ALD of silicon nitride were studied using NH3 and silicon chloride precursors, such as SiCl4[1], SiH2Cl2[2], Si2Cl6[3], and Si3Cl8. However, the reaction mechanism of ALD silicon nitride process was rarely reported. In the present study, we used density functional theory (DFT) method to calculate the reaction of silicon chloride precursors with a silicon nitride surface. DFT is a quantum mechanical modeling method to investigate the electronic structure of many-body systems, in particular atoms, molecules, and the condensed phases. The bond dissociation energy of each precursor was calculated and compared with each other. The different reactivities of silicon chlorides precursors were discussed using the calculated results.

The Male Experience in Nursing (남자간호사의 간호사 되기 경험)

  • Purpose : Using qualitative research and a phenomenological approach, the present study aimed to explore men's experiences of becoming a nurse. We posed the question "What has been your experience of becoming a nurse?" Methods : Eleven male nurses from three regions in Korea were selected through convenience sampling. The protocol suggested by Colaizzi was used for data analysis. Results : The principal themes were "Challenging to the stochastic stereotype of gender mechanics," "Floating outside the enclosure of multiple groups," "The male nurse's conceptualization of nursing organizations," "To stand with self-doubt, thinking of it as a stopover," and "Situations encountered by a male nurse." Conclusion : Men experience gender discrimination based on the social roles that are imposed on males and females both at school and in the workplace. They prefer to work where they have more diverse tasks that require quick responses. However, most male nurses adapt to this work by outlasting the difficulties. These nurses become accustomed to their tasks, and satisfied with their mature work performance. They often feel they are not adequately compensated for their work. They may judge the future as uncertain, and have lingering doubts about maintaining their positions, ultimately gravitating toward specialized fields that promise a brighter future and are more consistent with traditional gender expectations.

Memory Characteristics of High Density Self-assembled FePt Nano-dots Floating Gate with High-k $Al_2O_3$ Blocking Oxide

  • In this letter, We have investigated cell characteristics of the alloy FePt-NDs charge trapping memory capacitors with high-k $Al_2O_3$ dielectrics as a blocking oxide. The capacitance versus voltage (C-V) curves obtained from a representative MOS capacitor embedded with FePt-NDs synthesized by the post deposition annealing (PDA) treatment process exhibit the window of flat-band voltage shift, which indicates the presence of charge storages in the FePt-NDs. It is shown that NDs memory with high-k $Al_2O_3$ as a blocking oxide has performance in large memory window and low leakage current when the diameter of ND is below 2 nm. Moreover, high-k $Al_2O_3$ as a blocking oxide increases the electric field across the tunnel oxide, while reducing the electric field across the blocking layer. From this result, this device can achieve lower P/E voltage and lower leakage current. As a result, a FePt-NDs device with high-k $Al_2O_3$ as a blocking oxide obtained a~7V reduction in the programming voltages with 7.8 V memory.

  • This paper deals with friction-induced vibration of disc brake system under constant friction coefficient. A linear, finite element parameter model to represent the floating caliper disc brake system is proposed. The complex eigenvalues are used to investigate the dynamic stability and in order to verify simulations which are based on the FEM model, the experimental modal test and the dynamometer test are performed. The comparison of experimental and simulation results shows a good agreement and the analysis indicates that mode coupling due to friction force is responsible for disc brake squeal. And squeal type instability is investigated by using the parametric rotor simulation. This indicates parameters which have influence on the propensity of brake squeal. This helped to validate the FEM model and establish confidence in the simulation results. Also they may be useful during real disk brake model.
