Squeal noise is a typical brake noise that is annoying to both passengers and pedestrians. Its frequency range is fairly wide from 1 kHz to 18 kHz, which can be distressful to people. The brake squeal noise occurs due to various mechanisms, such as the mode coupling of the brake system, self-excited vibration, unstable wear, and others. In this study, several parameters involved in the generation of a squeal noise are investigated experimentally by using a brake noise dynamometer. The speed, caliper pressure, torque, and friction coefficient are measured as functions of time on the dynamometer. The contact pressure and temperature distributions of the disc and the pad are also measured by using a thermal imaging camera and a pressure mapping system. As a result of the simultaneous measurement of the friction coefficient and squeal amplitude as functions of the velocity, it is found that the onset of the squeal may be predicted from the ${\mu}-v$ curve. It is also found that a non-uniform contact pressure causes instability and, in turn, a squeal. Based on the analysis results, design modifications of the pad are suggested for improved noise characteristics.

Automotive NVH on brake operation is mainly caused by a coupling action of vehicle speed and inter parts friction and its frequency occurs over a broad band of 0.1 kHz~10 kHz. Especially, squeal noise, being a self-excited vibration generated by friction force between drum and lining, occurs over 1 kHz and consequently dynamic instability is induced when friction energy is applied to a brake vibration system. The squeal strongly depends on nonlinear properties influenced by the material of lining, velocity of vehicle, and the dynamic properties of a brake system. The dynamic properties are considered as a main influential design factor to squeal noise, however the analysis of the properties are rarely facilitated due to arbitrariness of shape by wearing down. In this paper, we research generating tendency of squeal noise through complex eigenvalue analysis, tracking drum brake's unstable modes in accordance with the wear shape of drum and lining such as tapered and bellmouth shape, and analyze computed unstable modes by variable shapes.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the vibration characteristics and develop a mounting which can improve the strength safety factor to replace the high failure rate APU(auxiliary power unit) imported metal mounts with rubber mount that can be domestically produced. For this study, we analyzed in 3 kinds of rubber mounts hardness for the natural frequency to avoid the average excited frequency of the APU. In addition, allowed vibration acceleration of rubber mount confirmed to 90.8 g by adding a strength safety factor. To assure the validity of the design, we measure the vibration acceleration equipped with a metal mount and rubber mount 2 species(Hs 50 and 60). As a result, the proposed design method in this study is reasonable because the rubber mounts is excellent strength safety factor and vibration transmissibility than metal mounts.

The vibration characteristics of the pad fluttering in a fluid film tilting pad journal bearing(4-pad LBP) have been investigated experimentally under the different values of oil supply flow rate, bearing load and shaft speed. The vibration characteristics of the pad fluttering are estimated by measuring the time signal of circumferential distribution of the film thickness and the cascade plot of the response of the relative displacement between the bearing and the shaft. It is shown that the vibration frequency of the pad fluttering has a sub-synchronous frequency and 31mos1 does not change by the increase of shaft speed. However the vibration amplitude is increased by the increase of shaft speed. From those experimental results, pad fluttering can be thought of as a self-excited vibration. The incipient pad fluttering velocity is increased by the increase of oil supply rate and by the decrease of bearing load. It is observed that the vibration amplitude of the pad fluttering can be decreased by the control of supply oil flow rate effectively. And also It is known that the outbreak of pad fluttering does not concern with the shaft vibration.

We have reported structural and optical properties of self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) grown by molecular beam epitaxy with different arsenic to indium flux ratios (V/III ratios). By increasing the V/III ratio from 9 to 160, average diameter and height of the InAs QDs decreased, but areal density of them increased. The InAs QDs grown under V/III ratio of 30 had a highest-aspect-ratio of 0.134 among them grown with other conditions. Optical property of the InAs QD was investigated by the temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) and integrated PL. From the temperature dependence PL measurements of InAs QDs, the activation energies of $E_{a1}$ and $E_{a2}$ for the InAs QDs were obtained $48{\pm}3meV$ and $229{\pm}23meV$, respectively. It was considered that the values of $E_{a1}$ and $E_{a2}$ are corresponded to the energy difference between ground-state and first excited state, and the energy difference between ground-state and wetting layer, respectively.

In this study, a parametric study is performed to investigate the squeal noise of an automobile water pump. The squeal noise studied in this paper is generated by the self-excited torsional resonance of the rotating shaft, and this noise is related to the stick-slip phenomenon of the mechanical seal in the water pump. The mechanical seal friction has the characteristics of the negative velocity-gradient. The equations of motion of multiple-degree-of-freedom torsional vibration model is constructed by the Holzer's method and then the equation is transformed to an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom torsional resonance simulation model. A squeal noise criteria is determined by the simulation model to perform the parametric study. The design parameters(the mass moment of inertia of the pulley, the mass moment of inertia of the impeller, the length of the shafts, the radius of the shafts, spinning speed of the shafts, the position of the mechanical seal, radius of the mechanical seal, and normal load of the mechanical seal) are investigated to confirm the stability for the squeal noise.
Zeolites and microporouos materials continue to attract attention as novel hosts for photochemical reactions. Zeolities are attractive because of their ability to selectivity exchange and incorporate species within the void spaces and interconnecting channels, providing a spatial arrangement of molecules. Our research has primarily focused on intrazeolitic electron transfer from excited Ru(bpy)32+ in supercages of zeolite Y to a series of bipyridinium ions. In the Ru(bpy)32+ viologen-zeolite Y samples, the slowing of the back electron transfer from the bipyridinium radical cation to Ru(bpy)32+ allows for charge propagation via self exchange between diquat molecules. This provides an opportunity for permanent charge separation. When the migrating charge on the diquat radical within the zeolite reaches the surface, it can be transferred to a neutral viologen (PVS) in solution, resulting in permanent charge separation. The advantage of long-lived charge separation can be exploited for useful chemistry if suitable catablysts can be assembled on the zeolities. We have studied Ru(bpy)2 as water oxdiation catalysts. We have demonstrated that synthesis of RuO2 fibers on a zeolite via thermal decomposition of Ru3(CO)12 leads to the most active water decomposition catalyst reported to date. Because of the extensive interest of photochemical water reduction to H2, much is known about catalytic systems usin gone electron catalyst, and even more importantly, that no reaction of viologen occurred with H2 over this catalyst. The present challenge is to incorporate all these elements of the system into an architecture and we are examining zeolite membranes for this purpose.

With the increase of track density, high rotational speed and the compatibility for various media such as CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, DVD-ROM/RAM/RW etc. in optical disk drive, the effective anti-vibration design is so crucial for robust operaton. Especailly when the drive is self-excited by unbalanced disk, internal sled base vibration and its external transmission to the case bring about so severe problem. Generally these two consideration points the practical anti-vibration design process to control thses two conflictive properties using finite element analysis. As an example of the design process, Duro 25 and 40 visco-elastic rubber mount was selected and analyzed. The stiffness obtained from FEM rubber model was well matched with the experiments. Also it was confirmed that the internal and external vibration induced from unbalanced disk have good agreement with experimental results. The proposed design process is adopted to the slim-type optical disk drive.

This paper deals with friction-induced vibration of disc brake system under constant friction coefficient. A linear, finite element parameter model to represent the floating caliper disc brake system is proposed. The complex eigenvalues are used to investigate the dynamic stability and in order to verify simulations which are based on the FEM model, the experimental modal test and the dynamometer test are performed. The comparison of experimental and simulation results shows a good agreement and the analysis indicates that mode coupling due to friction force is responsible for disc brake squeal. And squeal type instability is investigated by using the parametric rotor simulation. This indicates parameters which have influence on the propensity of brake squeal. This helped to validate the FEM model and establish confidence in the simulation results. Also they may be useful during real disk brake model.

This paper describes the fluttering characteristics of the upper pad in a tilting pad journal bearing(6-pad, LOP type) using a steam turbine. In order to investigate the phenomena of the upper pad fluttering experimentally, the absolute vibration of the upper pads, the relative vibration between bearing and shaft and the circumferential distribution of the film thickness are measured under the different values of supply oil flow rate, shaft speed and bearing load. It can be known that the fluttering mechanism of the upper pads has a tendency of the self-excited vibration from the study of fluttering frequencies and amplitudes with the change of shaft speed. Furthermore, it is observed that the incipient upper pad fluttering velocity is increased by the increase of oil supply flow rate and the fluttering amplitude of the upper pads is increased by the decrease of the ell flow rate and by the increase of the bearing load.
