Objective: To determine the unique contribution of geometrical design characteristics of orthodontic mini-implants on maximum insertion torque while controlling for the influence of cortical bone thickness. Methods: Total number of 100 cylindrical orthodontic mini-implants was used. Geometrical design characteristics of ten specimens of ten types of cylindrical self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants (Ortho Easy$^{(R)}$, Aarhus, and Dual Top$^{TM}$) with diameters ranging from 1.4 to 2.0 mm and lengths of 6 and 8 mm were measured. Maximum insertion torque was recorded during manual insertion of mini-implants into bone samples. Cortical bone thickness was measured. Retrieved data were analyzed in a multiple regression model. Results: Significant predictors for higher maximum insertion torque included larger outer diameter of implant, higher lead angle of thread, and thicker cortical bone, and their unique contribution to maximum insertion torque was 12.3%, 10.7%, and 24.7%, respectively. Conclusions: The maximum insertion torque values are best controlled by choosing an implant diameter and lead angle according to the assessed thickness of cortical bone.

In this report, we describe the successful use of alternate rapid maxillary expansions and constrictions with a hybrid hyrax-mandibular miniplate combination and simultaneous orthodontic treatment for the management of severe Class III malocclusion due to maxillary hypoplasia in an 11-year-old girl. The devices were removed after 20 months of treatment, and the family was instructed about a careful control and retention program that should be followed in accordance with the patient's growth. The final result included the correction of Class III malocclusion with adequate function and excellent facial esthetics, which restored the patient's self-esteem and provided personal motivation. The outcomes showed good stability after 24 months of retention. The decrease in the duration of active treatment is the most important finding from the present case. Considering that facial esthetics in adolescence is a determining factor for the development of a personality and interpersonal relationships, we recommend the use of this protocol for growing patients, who will exhibit not only an improved physical appearance but also a better quality of life.

Reinforced concrete (RC) structures have been most widely used because of the economic efficiency. However, it is very weak to tensile stresses and difficult to control deflection due to the heavy self-weight of concrete. Although it is generally known that prestressed concrete structures can be the most effective to overcome the demerit of RC structures, its application is very seldom in domestic construction for the difficult onsite circumstances. The post-tension method, which is well fit for buildings that are mostly indeterminate structures and beneficial for monolithic construction, has been introduced to just a few building construction. The application of full PT method into entire spans makes construction engineers feel very difficult due to the lack of current condition in construction fields. Therefore, this study proposed the partially applied PT method as an alternative, which can improve the deflection control of RC structures and reduce the construction difficulty by applying the PT method in a part of span length as needed, and analyzed its characteristics of structural behavior. In this study, the top anchorage was applied to improve the applicability of partial PT method, and the analysis results of slab behavior were compared to the measured values obtained from the post-tensioned slab constructed by the partial PT method.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to investigate the histomorphometric characteristics of the healing process of microcracks in the cortical bone after the installation of mini-implants (MIs). Methods: Self-drilling MIs were inserted into the tibial diaphysis of twelve adult male New Zealand rabbits. Four MIs per rabbit were placed randomly. The animals were divided into four groups according to the length of the healing period: group A was sacrificed immediately, group B was sacrificed after one week, group C was sacrificed after two weeks, and group D was sacrificed after four weeks. Cortical bone thickness was measured using micro-computed tomography, and histomorphometric analyses of the cumulative length of the microcracks (CLCr) and the total number of microcracks (NCr) were performed using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Results: The microcracks were radially and concentrically aligned in the peri-MI bone. The CLCr decreased significantly one week after the surgery, mainly due to healing of the concentrically aligned microcracks. The CLCr showed another significant decrease from two weeks after the surgery to four weeks after the surgery, mainly reflecting healing of the radially aligned microcracks. A statistically significant decrease in the NCr occurred as the microcracks healed from zero weeks to two weeks. However, no significant difference in the NCr was found between groups C and D. Conclusions: In order to improve the primary stability of MIs, delayed loading and a healing period of a certain length are recommended to ensure the optimal healing of microcracks and bone remodeling.

Beam String Structure is a structure system that is composed with beam, strut and string, and the structural capacity of this structure system is enhanced by introducing prestress force in string and controling the stress and deformation of beam. Researching on the established studies and examples, character and composition methods of Beam String Structure was investigated. At the result, It was examined that the design elements of the system are shape and rise of beam, sag of string, plan arrangement and the composition and number of strut, in addition, detailed composition methods of the design elements were represented. Also, it was showed that the method to form the individual mechanism against additional load can be employed in order to reduce stress of Beam String Structure under the heavy additional load.

Conventional PSC I type girders were adversely affected by the self - weight of concrete, anchorage, prestressing. In order to overcome this problem, PSC girder was constructed with a hollow in the web and developed a hollow web PSC type I girder which is applicable to 50 - 70m span by multistage stressing and then actually long span hollow web PSC girder bridge was constructed. In this study, the results of Static Load Test and the Finite Element Analysis of the hollow web PSC I girder bridges were compared and analyzed, and the Load Carrying Capacity and safety of PSC girder bridges were evaluated. The Static Load Test and the numerical analysis results of this bridge showed similar tendency and the behavior of the hollow web PSC I girder was well simulated. The entire girders of the bridges had sufficient Load Carrying Capacity under the live load design condition and the bridges satisfied the safety and confirmed the appropriateness of the construction.

The study discussed in this paper presents a method of estimating sources of geometric errors in suspension bridges in use, based on geometric survey data. A geometric error is defined as the difference between the survey data and the design geometry of a main cable. It is assumed that the geometric error in a suspension bridge is caused by the variations in the weight of the stiffening girder and the deformation of the anchorage foundations due to the creep of soil. The variations in the girder weight and the deformation of the foundation were estimated by constructing a matrix of factors that affect suspension bridges due to the variations. To check the validity of the proposed method, it was applied to the Kwang-An Bridge, and the sources of geometric errors in the bridge were estimated using the survey data.
If conventional reinforcements are used for high-strength concrete (HSC) structures, a large amount of the reinforcement must be required to compensate for the brittleness of HSC and make the best use of HSC. This raises some structural problems such as steel congestion and an increase in self-weight. Therefore, alternative reinforcing materials and methods for HSC structures are needed. In this study, four full-scale beam specimens constructed with HSC (100 MPa) were tested to investigate the effect of the different shear reinforcements on the shear behavior. These four specimens were reinforced for shear stirrups with normal and high strength steels, headed bars, and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars, respectively. In addition, steel fibers were added to the HSC in the two of the specimens to observe their beneficial effects. The use of high strength steels resulted in the improvement of the shear capacity since the shear resistance provided by the shear reinforcements and the bond strength were increased. The specimen reinforced with headed bars also showed a superior performance to the conventional steel reinforced specimen due to the considerably high anchorage strength of headed bar. CFRP bars used in this research, however, seemed to be inadequate for shear reinforcement because of the inferior bond capacity. The presence of the steel fibers in concrete led to remarkable improvement in the ductility of the specimens as well as in the overall cracks control capability.
This study was conducted to examine the establishment of bovine ES-like cells having pluripotency. The hatched blastocysts derived from culture of in vitro fertilized embryos for 10 to 12 days dissociated mechanically into ICM-and trophectoderm-rich clumps using needle, and cultured onto mitotically-inactivated MEF feeder layer. The primary colonies originated from ICM cells were detached mechanically 7 days after seeding and subsequent subculture was conducted at intervals of every 5 to 7 days. Two ES -like cell lines were established and maintained over 40 passages. Self-renewal of the established lines was confirmed by examining the alkaline phosphatase activity, stem cell-specific marker profiles including SSEA isotopes, Oct-4 and STAT3. Moreover, the established cell lines could produce anchorage-independent embryoid bodies (EBs) with gradual decrease of Oct-4 transcript level in time-dependent manner.

Objective: To investigate the effects of different pilot-drilling methods on the biomechanical stability of self-tapping mini-implant systems at the time of placement in and removal from artificial bone blocks. Methods: Two types of artificial bone blocks (2-mm and 4-mm, 102-pounds per cubic foot [102-PCF] polyurethane foam layered over 100-mm, 40-PCF polyurethane foam) were custom-fabricated. Eight mini-implants were placed using the conventional motor-driven pilot-drilling method and another 8 mini-implants were placed using a novel manual pilot-drilling method (using a manual drill) within each of the 2-mm and 4-mm layered blocks. The maximum torque values at insertion and removal of the mini-implants were measured, and the total energy was calculated. The data were statistically analyzed using linear regression analysis. Results: The maximum insertion torque was similar regardless of block thickness or pilot-drilling method. Regardless of the pilot-drilling method, the maximum removal torque for the 4-mm block was statistically higher than that for the 2-mm block. For a given block, the total energy at both insertion and removal of the mini-implant for the manual pilot-drilling method were statistically higher than those for the motor-driven pilot-drilling method. Further, the total energies at removal for the 2-mm block was higher than that for the 4-mm block, but the energies at insertion were not influenced by the type of bone blocks. Conclusions: During the insertion and removal of mini-implants in artificial bone blocks, the effect of the manual pilot-drilling method on energy usage was similar to that of the conventional, motor-driven pilot-drilling method.
