Stress responses were measured by SOS (symptoms of stress) inventory and self- esteem was measured by Rosenberg's self-esteem scale. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results were as follows : 1. The mean SOS score of subjects was 1.22 and that showed statistically significant according to gender difference (t=-6.00, P<0.0001) and father's occupations (F=3.10, P=0.006). 2. The mean self-esteem score was 2.77 and that showed statistically significant difference according to economic status(F=3.96, P=0.02) and father's occupations (F=2.71, P=0.01). 3. There was significant negative correlation between the mean SOS score and the mean self-esteem score(r=-0.31, P=0.0001). In conclusion, the examines had very high physiological and psychological stress responses and especially female showed higher stress responses than male. For this reason, school nurses are recommended (1)to develop appropriate stress management technique, (2) to provide more intensive care for health of female examines Nursing intervention should be developed for enhancing self-esteem of examines because self-esteem is negatively correlated with SOS.

  • The present study was designed to answer the following questions : The first overall question had to do with the relationship between sex-role identity and self-esteem-more specifically, is androgyny or masculinity more importamt in explaining the variation in self-esteem? The second overall question had to do with the degree to which the relationship between sex-role identity and self-esteem is a universal or a culturally specific phenomeon-more specifically, is the relationship between sex-role identity and self-esteem the same in Korean and American cultures? The Bem Sex Role Inventory and the Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory were administered to 208 American college students and 207 Korean college students, respectively, in introductory sociology classes. The BSRI and SEI are standardized for American subjects and written in English. Prior to administering these instruments to Korean subjects, they were translated ito the Korean Language. In order to fully explore the data, qualitative as well as quantitative measurement of the BSRI were used, and both factorial and regression analyses were performed in this study. The most important cross-cultural differences found in the present study are directly related to the two research questions. In the U.S. sample, masculine attributes were found to be more important in explaining self-esteem. On the other hand, androgynous attributes were positively related to self-esteem in the Korean sample. These findings also provide the answer to the second question. That is, different cross-cultural patterns of relationship were found between sexrole identity and self-esteem, providing some support for a culture-bound relationship. These cross-cultural differences were discussed in terms of both confucian values held by Koreans and Bakan's suggestion of a positive relationship between agentic characteristics and modernization.

  • This study was designed to identify the relationships among powerlessness, self-esteem and depression in Korean-American immigrant elderly. The purpose was to provide baseline data for nursing intervention to improve their health. The results showed that depression was significantly correlated with self-esteem and powerlessness, self-esteem was also significantly correlated with powerlessness. Powerlessness was different from the level of education and health conditions. Self-esteem was significantly different to the frequency of family visits. Depression was significantly different from age. 50.0% of depression was explained by powerlessness and self-esteem. This suggests that a higher level of powerlessness and a lower level of self-esteem are associated with a higher the level of depression. In conclusion, to improve the psychological health of Korean-American immigrant elderly, it is crucial to consider age, the level of education and health conditions, and continually manage the levels of powerlessness and self-esteem.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between adolescent stress and delinquency. For this study, a survey with 565 middle and high school students in Daegu Metropolitan City was carried out, and using the data collected, frequency analysis, descriptive statistic analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis and Sobel Test were conducted. The study results are as follows. First, stress had a positively significant effect on delinquency. Second, stress had a negatively significant effect on self-esteem. Third, self-esteem had a negatively significant effect on delinquency. This shows that a high level of stress among adolescents led to an increase in delinquency. Also, a high level of stress perceived by adolescents negatively influenced self-esteem, a low level of self-esteem is related to an increase in delinquency, and self-esteem had a partial mediating effect. Based on these results, therefore, this study suggested methods of introducing a mental health program for reducing adolescent stress and improving self-esteem and of preventing and intervening in delinquency.
