  • The purpose of this study was to develop the educational program based on the self-efficacy theory of Bandura(1986) and to identify the effect of the program among women. For this purpose a non-equivalent control group, and a pretest- posttest design was used between the experimental and the control group. The subjects in this study were female and were over the age 40, 37 in the experimental group and 46 in the control group. In this study, the educational program was developed to increase the level of osteoporosis self efficacy and to prevent osteoporosis. The program consisted of watching, videotapes, telephone contact, lectures, and small group discussions. This study was conducted to determine whether the 6 month educational program would increase osteoporosis self- efficacy, thus modifying life styles related to osteoporosis increas BMD. The instruments utilized in this study were the Lifestyle Questionnaire, and the Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy Scale. Also, bone marrow density (BMD) on the left wrist was measured by DTX-200. The findings are as follows: 1. A significant decrease in BMD was observed in the control group. By contrast, no significant change in BMD was observed in the experimental group. 2. The Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy was not significantly changed in both the experimental and control groups. 3. In the experimental group, the number of exercise participants and their exercise times were significantly increased. Also the amount of caffeine intake was significantly decreased.

  • This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of activities of daily living(ADU) and its influencing factors in patients with chronic arthritis. The data were obtained from 104 patients with chronic arthritis in one university hospital from May to August. 2000. For analysing data. SAS program was used for t-test. ANOVA, Schefte test. Pearson correlation. and stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows: 1. The variables which influenced self-efficacy were duration of disease. number of painful joint, quality of sleep and alcohol drinking. 2. The variables which influenced fatigue were diagnosis and number of painful joint. 3. The variables which influenced ADL were age. duration of disease. diagnosis. number of painful joint. number of exercise and alcohol drinking. 4. ADL was positive correlation with self-efficacy and negative correlation with fatigue. And self-efficacy was negative correlation with fatigue. 5. The predictors to explain ADL were self-efficacy. number of painful joint. lupus. duration of disease and religion. These predictors explained $66.01\%$ of the activites of daily living. According to these findings. the most significant influencing factor of ADL was self-efficacy. therefore the development of nursing intervention for enhancing self-efficacy would be needed. Also. it is suggested that an exercise program should be recommended as one of useful and appropriate nursing intervention for reducing fatigue and increasing ADL.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the dietary behaviors and health-related lifestyles, according to exercise habits, of female university students in the Jeonju area. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 285 students, and the statistical data analysis was completed using the SPSS v. 10.0 program. The results are summarized as follows. The weight, height, and BMI averages of the regular exercise and non-exercise groups were 53.05 kg, 162.46 cm, and 20.23, and 50.81 kg, 161.46 cm, and 19.48, respectively. The breakfast skipping ratio was higher in the non-exercise group than the exercise group. More than 72% of the exercise and 71% of the non-exercise group responded to regularly having lunch at the university canteens or restaurants around campus. Approximately 70% of the exercise and 71% of the non-exercise group responded to having dinner irregularly, which was mainly caused by reasons such as 'irregularity of life style' and 'appointments with friends'. The snack intake ratios of the exercise and non-exercise groups were high, but the exercise group ate more fruit, yogurt, and milk than the non-exercise group. The favorite sports of the exercise group were 'walk(jogging)', 'yoga', 'bicycle,' 'swim,' etc. In particular, 5.3% of the exercise group had ridden a bicycle to the university. More than 97% of the students were non-smokers. About 14% of the exercise and 15% of the non-exercise group rank alcohol once or twice a week. The exercise group did not show exceptional health-oriented dietary behaviors in comparison to the non-exorcise group. Therefore, an exercise-oriented nutrition education program would be beneficial to the students, in order to improve their dietary behaviors and health-related lifestyles.
