The global ultrasonic system for the self-localization of a mobile robot consists of several ultrasonic transmitters fixed at some reference positions in the global coordinates of robot environment. By activating the ultrasonic transmitters, the mobile robot is able to get the distance to the ultrasonic transmitters and compute its own position in the global coordinate. Due to the limitation on the ultrasonic signal strength and beam width as well as the environmental obstacles however, the ultrasonic signals from some generator may not be transmitted to the robot. Thus, instead of activating the all ultrasonic transmitters, it is necessary to select some ultrasonic generators to activate based on the current robot position. In this paper, we propose a selective activation algorithm for self-localization with the global ultrasonic system. The selective activation algorithm gets the meaningful ultrasonic data at every sampling instants, which results in the faster and more accurate response of the self-localization than the conventional sequential activation. Through the self-localization and path following control, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed selective activation algorithm.

IEEE 802.11a is a standard for the high-speed wireless local area network (WLAN), supporting from 6 up to 54 Mbps in a 5 GHz band. We propose a channel equalization algerian and a sampling clock recovery algorithm by utilizing the Viterbi decoder output of the IEEE 802.11a WLAN standard. The proposed channel equalizer adaptively compensates channel variations. The proposed system uses re-encoded Viterbi decoder outputs as reference symbols for the adaptation of the channel equalizer. It also extracts sampling phase information with the Viterbi decoder outputs for fine adjustment of the sampling clock. The proposed sampling clock recovery and equalizer are more robust to noise and frequency selective fading environments than conventional systems using only four pilot samples.

This paper Describe a modelling method for SCR(selective Catalytic reduction) system in refuse incineration plant. We consider the SCR system as a single input single output system. For modelling the SCR system, an auto regressive exogeneous(ARX) modelling method is used. In this case, we should design the white noise input for modelling and put it on the system as an input (.NH/sap2/.), and taken an outlet NOx as an output. From these two relations, we design the ARX model with 45 second delay time and transform to discrete system with 0.5 sampling time. Using the obtained SCR model, we simulate the SCR system to reduce the outlet NOx content by a conventional PID control method.
This study was undertaken to determine the effect of reservoirs on water quality and the distribution of pathogenic and indicator bacteria in a drinking water distribution system (total length 14km). Raw water, disinfected water, and water samples from the distribution system were subjected to physicochemical and microbiological analyses. Most factors encountered at each season included residual chloride, nitrate, turbidity, and phosphorus for heterotrophic bacterial distribution, and hardness, heterotrophic bacteria, sampling site, and DOC (dissolved organic carbon) for bacteria on selective media. No Salmonella or Shigella spp. were detected, but many colonies of opportunistic pathogens were found. Comparing tap water samples taken at similar distances from the water treatment plant, samples that had passed through a reservoir had a higher concentration of heterotrophic bacteria, and a higher rate of colony formation with 10 times as many bacteria on selective media. Based on the results with m-Endo agar, the water in reservoirs appeared safe; however, coliforms and opportunistic pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa were identified on other selective media. This study illustrates that storage reservoirs in the drinking water distribution system have low microbiological water quality by opportunistic pathogens, and therefore, water quality must be controlled.

In this paper,we propose a novel technoque of improving volume rendering quality and speed by integrating volume data and global shape information together. The selective volume rendering method is to generate distance transformed volume using a distance transform to determine the minimum distance to the neaest intercsting part and then render it. The shape information prevents from object occlusions come from similar intensity of each object. Thus it provides effective visual results that enable to get a clear understanding of complex structures. We show the results of selective volume rendering method for left ventricle and right ventricle ans well as the results of selective sampling methods depending on the interpolation from EBCT cardiac images. Our method offers an accelerated technique to accurately visuahze the surfaces of devined objects segmented from the volume.

Purpose: In-situ monitoring of water quality is fundamental to most environmental applications. The high cost and long delays of conventional laboratory methods used to determine water quality, including on-site sampling and chemical analysis, have limited their use in efficiently managing water sources while preventing environmental pollution. The objective of this study was to develop an on-site water monitoring system consisting mainly of an Arduino board and a sensor array of multiple ion selective electrodes (ISEs) to measure the concentration of $NO_3$ ions. Methods: The developed system includes a combination of three ISEs, double-junction reference electrode, solution container, sampling system consisting of three pumps and solenoid valves, signal processing circuit, and an Arduino board for data acquisition and system control. Prior to each sample measurement, a two-point normalization method was applied for a sensitivity adjustment followed by an offset adjustment to minimize the potential drift that could occur during continuous measurement and standardize the response of multiple electrodes. To investigate its utility in on-site nitrate monitoring, the prototype was tested in a facility where drinking water was collected from a water supply source. Results: Differences in the electric potentials of the $NO_3$ ISEs between 10 and $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$NO_3$ concentration levels were nearly constant with negative sensitivities of 58 to 62 mV during the period of sample measurement, which is representative of a stable electrode response. The $NO_3$ concentrations determined by the ISEs were almost comparable to those obtained with standard instruments within 15% relative errors. Conclusions: The use of the developed on-site nitrate monitoring system based on automatic sampling and two-point normalization was feasible for detecting abrupt changes in nitrate concentration at various water supply sites, showing a maximum difference of $4.2mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ from an actual concentration of $14mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$.

In this study, we consider a problem of forecasting daily city gas demand of Korea. Forecasting daily gas demand is a daily routine for gas provider, and gas demand needs to be forecasted accurately in order to guarantee secure gas supply. In this study, we analyze the time series of city gas demand in several ways. Data analysis shows that primary factors affecting the city gas demand include the demand of previous day, temperature, day of week, and so on. Incorporating these factors, we developed a multiple linear regression model. Also, we devised a sampling procedure that selectively collects the past data considering the characteristics of the city gas demand. Test results on real data exhibit that the MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) obtained by the proposed method is about 2.22%, which amounts to 7% of the relative improvement ratio when compared with the existing method in the literature.
A Solid-phase micro extraction(SPME) was evaluated as a tool for headspace sampling of tobacco samples. Several experimental parameters (sampling temperature, pH, and type of SPME fibers) were optimized to improve sampling efficiency in two aspects ; maximum adsorption and selective adsorption of volatile organic acids onto SPME fibers. Among four types of SPME fibers such as PDMS(Polydimethylsiloxane), PA(Polyacrylate), Car/PDMS (Carboxen/Polydimethylsiioxane) and PDMS/DVB(Polydimethylsiioxane/Divinylbenzene) which were investigated to determine the selectivity and adsorption efficiency. A variety of tobacco samples such as flue cured, burley and oriental were used in this study. The effect of these parameters was often dominated by the physical and chemical nature (volatility, polarity) of target compounds. This method allowed us to make important improvements in selectivity and sensitivity. The Car/PDMS fiber was shown to be the most efficient at extracting the 10 selected volatile organic acids. The parameters were optimized: $80^{\circ}C$ adsorption temperature, 30 min of adsorption time, $240^{\circ}C$ desorption temperature, 1 min of adsorption time.
Seawater sampling is the primary task for the study of the marine environmental parameters that require shipboard or laboratory experiments for their analyses, and is also required for the calibration of some instruments for in situ measurement. A new automatic bottle (AUTTLE) is developed for seawater sampling at any desired time and water depth by self-triggering. Both any type of single or assembled mooring for 15 days and manual actuation by using a remote messenger as existing instantaneous single point water samplers are possible. Its sampling capacity and the resolution of time setting are 2 liters and 1 second, respectively. The result of a field experiment with an optical backscattering sensor (OBS) and a total of 14 AUTTLES for the in situ calibration of the OBS shows that the AUTTLE must improve our understanding on the behavior of the sand/mud mixtures in the environments with high waves and strong tides. The AUTTLE will serve as a valuable instrument in the various fields of oceanography, especially where synchronized seawater sampling at several sites is required and/or the information in storm period is important.

This paper proposes the algorithm for tracking of the residual phase errors incurred by carrier frequency offset and sampling frequency offset in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems which are suitable for high data rate wireless communications. In the OFDM systems the subcarriers which are orthogonal to each other are modulated by digital data and transmitted simultaneously. The carrier frequency offset causes degradation of signal to noise ratio(SNR) performance and interference between the adjacent subcarriers. The errors in the sampling timing caused by the sampling frequency difference between the transmitter and the receiver sides also cause a major performance degradation in the OFDM systems. The residual error tracking and compensation mechanism is essential in the OFDM system since the carrier and the sampling frequency offset cause the loss of orthogonality resulting in the system performance loss. This paper proposes the scheme where the channel gain and the payload data information are reflected in the residual error tracking process which results in the reduction of the estimation error and the tracking performance improvements under the frequency selective fading wireless channels.
