  • This study is on the structural control experiment for a small scale three-story building structure employing on active mass damper subjected to earthquake loading. $\mu$-synthesis controllers, which belong to robust control strategies, were designed and their performance were experimentally verified. Frequency-dependent weighting functions corresponding to disturbance input and controlled output were defined and combined to produce optimal $\mu$-synthesis controllers. The experiment result shows 60-70% reduction in RMS responses under the band-limited white noise excitation and 30-45% reduction in peak responses under the scaled earthquake excitations. Good agreement was obtained between the simulations based on the identified mathematical model and experimental results. And the simulations for the system with uncertainties show that the designed controllers are robust within a specified range of uncertainties.

  • To reduce the story height for high-rise buildings, the TEC Beam is developed as a new composite beam composed of structural tee, precast concrete, stirrup, and site-in-cast reinforced concrete slab. The preliminary test of the proposed system was performed for simple beams and it showed a good behavior. However, for the field application of the system, it is required to develope a steel moment resisting connection using steel brackets on which upper rebars of the TEC BEAM are anchored. In this paper, three types of the proposed system are experimentally investigated. The parameters of the test are as follows: (1) the spacing of transverse bars, (2) the ratio of width of rebar's layer to bracket length. Specimens were classified as semi-rigid full strength by the Eurocode 4. It could be concluded that the proposed moment resisting system shows a good structural behavior and may be applicable in the filed.

  • Steel concentrically braced frame is an efficient system that can acquire resistance against the lateral force of buildings with the least amount of quantity. In this study is intended to proceed on the research of schemes for reinforcement by supplementing previously installed H-formed brace with non-welded cold-formed plastic stiffening materials restricting the flexure and buckling and acquire a consistent strength on the tensile and compressive force. As for the measures of supplementing previously-installed inverted V-formed braced frame, stiffening materials in the previous studies were converted to weak-axial supplementing materials to suggest a specific scheme evaluating the structural function through an experiment of members, interpretation of members, and frame-focused experiment. Reinforced brace satisfied the requirement to be prevent AISC brace from being ruptured due to imbalanced strength in the beam.

  • Earthquake resistance of RC column-steel beam (RCS) joints with simplified details were studied. Simplified details are necessary for large columns to improve the productivity and constructability. To strengthen the beam-column joint, the effects of transverse beams, studs, and U-cross ties were used. Four 2/3 scale interior RCS connections were tested under cyclic lateral loading. The specimens generally exhibited good deformation capacity exceeding 4.0% story drift ratio after yielding of both beam and beam-column joint. Ultimately, the specimens failed by shear mechanism of the joint panel. The test strengths were compared with the predictions of existing design methods.

  • Many studies reveal that during destructive earthquakes, most of the structures enter the inelastic phase. The amount of hysteretic energy in a structure is considered as an important criterion in structure design and an important indicator for the degree of its damage or vulnerability. The hysteretic energy value wasted after the structure yields is the most important component of the energy equation that affects the structures system damage thereof. Controlling this value of energy leads to controlling the structure behavior. Here, for the first time, the hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capacity are assessed at presence of elliptical braced resisting frames (ELBRFs), through an experimental study and numerical analysis of FEM. The ELBRFs are of lateral load systems, when located in the middle bay of the frame and connected properly to the beams and columns, in addition to improving the structural behavior, do not have the problem of architectural space in the bracing systems. The energy dissipation capacity is assessed in four frames of small single-story single-bay ELBRFs at ½ scale with different accessories, and compared with SMRF and X-bracing systems. The frames are analyzed through a nonlinear FEM and a quasi-static cyclic loading. The performance features here consist of hysteresis behavior, plasticity factor, energy dissipation, resistance and stiffness variation, shear strength and Von-Mises stress distribution. The test results indicate that the good behavior of the elliptical bracing resisting frame improves strength, stiffness, ductility and dissipated energy capacity in a significant manner.

  • The objective of the study in this paper was to develop a beam-column element to model members with purely flexural yielding, as well as members with yielding under combined flexure and axial force during severe earthquake ground motins. The developed element can be considered as an one-component series hinge type model. It has the capability to model plastic axial deformation and changes in axial stiffness, and employs hardening rules to handle monotonic, cyclic or arbitrary loading. In general, when compared to experimental results and fiber model predictions, the element showed significantly better performance than the bilinear hinger model and could properly model the beam-column behavior of bare steel members in moment resisting frames. The developed element can more accurately predict local deformation demands and overall responses of structural systems under earthquake loadings than the bilinear hinge element.

  • Some elevated water tanks have failed due to torsional vibrations in past earthquakes. The overall axisymmetric structural geometry and mass distribution of such structures may leave only a small accidental eccentricity between centre of stiffness and centre of mass. Such a small accidental eccentricity is not expected to cause a torsional failure. This paper studies the possibility of amplified torsional behaviour of elevated water tanks due to such small accidental eccentricity in the elastic as well as inelastic range; using two simple idealized systems with two coupled lateral-torsional degrees of freedom. The systems are capable of retaining the characteristics of two extreme categories of water tanks namely, a) tanks on staging with less number of columns and panels and b) tanks on staging with large number of columns and panels. The study shows that the presence of a small eccentricity may lead to large displacement of the staging edge in the elastic range, if the torsional-to-lateral time period ratio $({\tau})$ of the elevated tanks lies within a critical range of 0.7< ${\tau}$ <1.25. Inelastic behaviour study reveals that such excessive displacement in some of the reinforced concrete staging elements may cause unsymmetric yielding. This may lead to progressive strength deterioration through successive yielding in same elements under cyclic loading during earthquakes. Such localized strength drop progressively develop large strength eccentricity resulting in large localized inelastic displacement and ductility demand, leading to failure. So, elevated water tanks should have ${\tau}$ outside the said critical range to avoid amplified torsional response. The tanks supported on staging with less number of columns and panels are found to have greater torsional vulnerability. Tanks located near faults seem to have torsional vulnerability for large ${\tau}$.

  • This paper presents a new strengthening method on concrete column against seismic loads for structural performance tests. An X-bracing using high performance carbon fiber threads called the "Carbon fiber anchor X-bracing system" is used to connect RC frames internally. The carbon fiber sheet is wrapped around the column to fix the top and bottom of the column after Super anchor was installed by drilling hole on the column. The structural performance was evaluated experimentally and analytically. Two types of columns specimens were made; flexure fracture scaled model and shear fracture scaled model. For the performance evaluation, cyclic loading tests were conducted on moment and shear resisting columns with and without X bracing. Test results confirmed that the bracing system installed on RC columns enhanced the strength capacity and provided adequate ductility.

  • The confined concrete subjected multi-axil stresses have been known as the strength of concrete increases significantly. Many researchers have studied in confining effect of concrete, and now are studying in many fields. Lap splices were located in the plastic hinge region of most bridge piers that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Highway Design Specification on 1992. But sudden brittle failure of lap splices may occur under loading. This study introduces a new method to retrofit RC bridge columns with lap splice which do not have enough ductility during an earthquake. The new method use mechanical external pressure and steel plates around RC columns. The jacketing built following the new method shows good results of increasing the compressive strength and ductility of concrete cylinders. The thicker steel jacket shows larger compressive strength, however, the ductility at failure depends on the welding quality of steel jackets. In this study, The effect of the new method is verified through comparing the results of the compressive tests and analysis results.

  • 1-g shaking table test is conducted to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a soil-structure system under seismic loading condition. A consistent similitude law between the model and prototype is needed to predict the behavior of the prototype structure, quantitatively. The natural frequency of geomaterial decreases with the increase of shaking intensity because of the non-linear property of the geomaterial. This phenomenon affects the applicability of similitude laws in 1-g shaking table tests. In this study, a simple method is suggested to determine the frequency of the input motions in 1-g tests in order to enhance the applicability of similitude laws. Modified input frequency is calculated using the frequency ratio with consideration of the variation of the natural frequency according to the intensity of input ground acceleration. To verify the applicability of the suggested method, a series of 1-g shaking table tests were performed for three different sizes of model piles having an overburden mass on their heads by varying the acceleration and the frequency of input motion. The acceleration amplification ratio on the overburden mass, the lateral displacement at the pile head and the maximum bending moment along the pile depth were measured. The projected behaviors of the virtual prototype based on the measured values of the model tests, where the input frequencies were calculated by the new method, showed good consistency, verifying the applicability of the suggested method.
