  • Protection of structures against natural hazards such as earthquakes has always been a major concern. Semi-active control combines the reliability of passive control and versatility and adaptability of active control. So it has recently become a preferred control method. This paper proposes an algorithm based on Uniform Deformation Theory to mitigate vulnerable buildings using magneto-rheological (MR) damper. Due to the successful performance of fuzzy logic in control of systems and its simplicity and intrinsically robustness, it is used here to regulate MR dampers. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is also used as an adaptive method to develop a fuzzy control algorithm that is able to create uniform inter-story drifts. Results show that the proposed algorithm exhibited a desirable performance in reducing both linear and nonlinear seismic responses of structures. Performance of the presented method is indicated in compare with passive-on and passive-off control algorithms.

  • Brittle feature is one of the fracture behaviors of structure s and has a great influence on the seismic performance of structure materials. The load velocity acts as one of the main causes of brittle fracture, and in particular, in situations such as earthquakes, a high load velocity acts on buildings. However, most of the seismic performance evaluation of the domestic and external steel connections is conducted through static experiments. Therefore, there is a possibility that brittle fracture due to factors such as degradation of material toughness and reduction of maximum deformation rate due to high load velocity during an earthquake was not sufficiently considered in the existing seismic performance evaluation. This study conducts a static test at a low load velocity according to the existing experimental method and a dynamic test at a high load velocity using a shaking table, respectively. It compares and analyzes the fracture shape and structural performance according to the results of each experiment, and finally analyzes the effect of the load velocity size on the seismic performance of the connection.

  • An aircraft impact (AI) on a nuclear power plant (NPP) is considered to be a beyond-design-basis event that draws considerable attention in the nuclear field. As some NPPs have already adopted the seismic isolation technology, and there are relevant standards to guide the application of this technology in future NPPs, a new challenge is that nuclear power engineers have to determine a reasonable method for performing AI analysis of base-isolated NPPs. Hence, dynamic influences of the seismic isolation on the vibration and structural damage characteristics of the base-isolated CPR1000 containment are studied under various aircraft loads. Unlike the seismic case, the impact energy of AI is directly impacting on the superstructure. Under the coupled influence of the seismic isolation and the various AI load, the flexible isolation layer weakens the constraint function of the foundation on the superstructure, the results show that the seismic isolation bearings will produce a large horizontal deformation if the AI load is large enough, the acceleration response at the base-mat will also be significantly affected by the different horizontal stiffness of the isolation bearing. These concerns require consideration during the design of the seismic isolation system.

  • Pushover analysis is frequently used for evaluation of seismic performance and determination of seismic demand of a building structure in the current structural engineering practice field. However, pushover analysis has a advantage for estimation of seismic demands, which cannot account for the contributions of higher modes to response or for a redistribution of inertia forces because of structural yielding and the associated changes in the vibration properties of the structures. Recently, Chopra and Coel(2001) derived uncoupled inelastic dynamic equation of motion with several assumptions in the pushover analysis. By using this approach, pushover analysis for each mode is carried out and modal pushover analysis method, which can consider higher mode effects of the building, was suggested. The principle objective of this study is to introduced the modal pushover analysis by Chopra et al.(2001) and investigated the applicability and validity of this method for the steel moment frames subjected to various earthquake ground motions.

  • Shored Mechanically Stabilized Earth (SMSE) walls are types of soil retaining structures that increase soil stability under static and dynamic loads. The damage caused by an earthquake can be determined by evaluating the probabilistic seismic response of SMSE walls. This study aimed to assess the seismic performance of SMSE walls and provide fragility curves for evaluating failure levels. The generated fragility curves can help to improve the seismic performance of these walls through assessing and controlling variables like backfill surface settlement, lateral deformation of facing, and permanent relocation of the wall. A parametric study was performed based on a non-linear elastoplastic constitutive model known as the hardening soil model with small-strain stiffness, HSsmall. The analyses were conducted using PLAXIS 2D, a Finite Element Method (FEM) program, under plane-strain conditions to study the effect of the number of geogrid layers and the axial stiffness of geogrids on the performance of SMSE walls. In this study, three areas of damage (minor, moderate, and severe) were observed and, in all cases, the wall has not completely entered the stage of destruction. For the base model (Model A), at the highest ground acceleration coefficient (1 g), in the moderate damage state, the fragility probability was 76%. These values were 62%, and 54%, respectively, by increasing the number of geogrids (Model B) and increasing the geogrid stiffness (Model C). Meanwhile, the fragility values were 99%, 98%, and 97%, respectively in the case of minor damage. Notably, the probability of complete destruction was zero percent in all models.

  • To secure the structural safety of structures and members against earthquakes, the plastic deformation capacity demand of members should be accurately predicted. In the present study, a method for the evaluation of the plastic deformations of members for moment frames was developed. To facilitate the practical use of the proposed method in equivalent seismic design, the plastic deformations of members were evaluated based on the results of elastic analysis, without using nonlinear analysis. The plastic deformation demands of members were formulated as functions of story drift demand, redistributed moment and member stiffness. Story drift demand and moment redistribution were directly determined from elastic analysis. The proposed method was applied to an 8 story-2 bay moment frame, and the predicted plastic deformations were verified using nonlinear analysis. The results showed that the proposed method could be used to accurately predict the member plastic rotations with simple calculations. The proposed method can be applied both to the earthquake design of new structures and to the performance evaluation of existing structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers and to provide the data for developing improved seismic design criteria. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected. local discontinuity in deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel and concrete. The proposed numerical method for the prediction of seismic behavior for reinforced concrete bridge piers is veri fief by comparison with the reliable experimental results.

  • Most of seismic designs of major structures up to now have been performed by the traditional 'force-based design' approaches. However, they are not so efficient to evaluate the structural deformations by potential nonlinear behaviors which are directly related with the damages or performance levels during earthquakes. Lately, based on this situation, various kinds of new seismic design approaches based on the deformation, which is called 'displacement-based design' procedures, have been proposed. In this paper, most of detail techniques and procedures of the new design methods in the literature are comparatively reviewed and evaluated first, followed by a series of design examples of typical bridge structures. Comparing the results with those of the existing force-based design, the improved levels of performance and economy of the displacement-based seismic design have been validated.

  • Plastic deformation of link beams in eccentrically braced frames is the primary dissipating source of seismic energy. Despite the excellent compatibility with the architectural designs, previous researches indicate the deficiency of flexural yielding links compared to the shear yielding ones because of their localized plastic deformation. Previous investigations have shown that implementing web openings in beams could be an efficient method to improve the seismic performance of moment-resisting connections. Accordingly, this research investigates the use of flexural links with stiffened and un-stiffened web openings to eliminate localized plasticity at the ends of the link. For this purpose, the numerical models are generated in finite element software "Abaqus" and verified against experimental data gathered from other studies. Models are subjected to cyclic displacement history to evaluate their behavior. Failure of the numerical models under cyclic loading is simulated using a micromechanical based damage model known as Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM). The elastic stiffness and the strength-based and CVGM-based inelastic rotation capacity of the links are compared to evaluate the studied models' seismic response. The results of this investigation indicate that some of the flexural links with edge stiffened web openings show increased inelastic rotation capacity compared to an un-perforated link.
