  • For low-rise piloti-type buildings that suffered significant damage in the Pohang earthquake, the seismic performance of those designed by codes issued before and after the earthquake has been recently revised. This study started with the expectation that many of the requirements presented in the current codes may be excessive, and among them, the spacing of column stirrup could be relaxed. In particular, the recently revised design code of concrete structures for buildings, KDS 41 20 00, suggests that the column stirrup spacing is 1/2 of the minimum cross-sectional size or 200 mm, which is strengthened compared to KBC 2016, but relaxed than the current KDS, 41 17 00, which is 1/4 of the minimum size or 150 mm. As a result of the study, it was found that the target performance level was sufficiently satisfied by following the current standards and that it could be satisfied even if the relaxed spacing was followed. Therefore, the strict column stirrup spacing of KDS 41 17 00 could be relaxed if a wall other than core walls is recommended in the current guideline for the structural design of piloti-type buildings.

  • In this paper, a guideline for designing breakwater in wave loads and in seismic loads is proposed. A simple model structure in breaking wave zone is examined using Morison equation in consideration with the effect of an impact load, for evaluation of the wave loads. As the impact load effect is not significant, pressure distributions according to Goda are applied for evaluation of wave loads on breakwater. Structural behavior of breakwater in wave loads can be obtained using the Goda method, as well. For seismic analysis, Ofunato and Hachinohe models, as well as an artificial seismic acceleration loads model, are adopted. Soil-structure interaction analysis is carried out to find the seismic load effect. It is found that, in certain cases, structural deformation in wave loads is in the same level as deformation that in seismic loads. Thus, it is our recommendation that these two loads are considered at the same level in breakwater design.

  • Earthquake resistance design has been developed many countries like Japan, USA, Mexico, New Zealand etc., which countries have experienced many earthquakes. Nowadays, earthquake resistance design has come into worldwide use. In Korea, the seismic design regulations have been established since 1988 in order to minimize the economic losses. Recently performance based design method has been adopted as a new Earthquake resistance design method. These regulations, however, are targeted for newly constructed buildings, In Korea, there are no regulations for existing buildings that built before 1988. So, we need to prepare the regulations that evaluate the seismic performance, furthermore proper retrofitting design guideline needs to be proposed when remodeling old buildings. This study was performed that many existing apartments is being a Remodeling object when considering the present condition of existing apartment and the problems of cost and environment in the future plan. When Remodeling construction is reviewed by former the Seismic Performance Evaluation Method, generating problems is evaluation by using Push-over. According to this, it provides the appropriate method of calculating the Seismic Ship Performance Index.

  • Structural control through seismic isolation using elastomeric rubber bearing, which is also known as High Damping Rubber Bearing (HDRB), has seen an increase in use to provide protective from earthquake, especially for new buildings in earthquake zones. Besides, HDRB has also been used in structural rehabilitation of older yet significant buildings, such as museums and palaces. However, the present design approach applied in normal practice has often resulted in dissimilar HDRB dimension requirement between structural designers and bearing manufacturers mainly due to ineffective communication. Therefore, in order to ease the design process, most HDRB manufacturers have come up with catalogs that list all necessary and relevant product lines specifically for structural engineers to choose from. In fact, these catalogs contain physical dimension, compression property, shear characteristic, and most importantly, the total rubber thickness. Nonetheless, other complicated issues, such as the relationship between target isolation period and displacement demand (which determines the total rubber thickness), are omitted due to cul-de-sac fixing of these values in the catalogs. As such, this paper presents a formula, which is derived and extended from the present design approach, in order to offer a simple guideline for engineers to estimate the required HDRB size. This improved design formula successfully minimizes the discrepancies stumbled upon among structural designers, builders, and rubber bearing manufacturers in terms of variation order issue at the designing stage because manufacturer of isolator is always the last to be appointed in most projects.

  • Many researchers have studied on the optimal seismic design with the development of the computer. So far the application structure of most researches on the optimal seismic design was almost the moment resisting frame. Because the braced frames are the representative lateral load resisting system with the moment resisting frames, it is estimated that the effect on the practice will be great if it can is provided a design guideline through the development of optimal seismic design model for the braced frames. The purpose of this study is to propose the optimal seismic design model for the inverted V-type special concentrically braced frames considering the buckling of braces. The objective functions of this are to minimize the structural weight and maximize the total dissipated energy of the structure and the constraints of this are the strength conditions for the column, beam, brace and inter-story drifts condition. To verify the proposed model, it is applied to 2D steel concentrically braced frames of 3-story and 9-story.

  • Free-field ground motion during earthquake is significantly affected by the local site conditions and it is essential for the seismic design to perform the site specific ground response analysis. In this paper, the procedures of site specific ground response analysis were suggested based on the Korean seismic guideline and the review of state of the art technologies. The concept of ground response analysis was introduced, and the techniques of obtaining soil data for one dimensional equivalent linear analysis which include site investigation planning, field and laboratory testing techniques, deformational characteristics of soils at small to large strains, and site characterization techniques combining field and laboratory test results, were suggested. Finally, the case study was performed at Inchon area following the suggested procedure.

  • There are few earthquake records in Korea and the Japanese or American representative earthquake records have been generally used in the seismic design. In this study, some earthquake records which the range of earthquake magnitudes varies from 5.3 to 7.9 were collected and analyzed to assess which record can rationally reflect Korean seismic characteristics. In this assessment, each seismic energy and acceleration spectrum were analyzed with the unified maximum ground acceleration. Several numerical analyses on Korean representative caisson structures were also carried out to compare each dynamic displacement. In these numerical analyses, soil conditions and the dimension of structure such as height and width were changed. Through this assessment, it is found that the compatible earthquake magnitude in Korea is lower than 7. From the result of numerical analyses, it is shown that horizontal dynamic displacements corresponding to earthquake magnitudes over than 7 are quite larger than those below earthquake magnitude 7. Based on this study, it is necessary that Korean seismic design guideline will refer earthquake magnitude criteria for the construction of the economical aseismic structure.

  • This paper deals with steel braced frame as increasing the lateral strength and ductility in order to seismic retrofit of existing buildings and discusses the designing criteria and calculation method of retrofitted buildings. The addition of steel braced frame can be effective for increasing the lateral strength and ductility of existing buildings. However, There is a problem in utilizing this method. It is the approach to provide an adequate connection between the existing RC frame and the installed steel braced frame, because global strength by failure mode(three type) depends on detail of connection and strength of existing RC frame. So, the designer must be confirmed if it satisfies the required performance or not. Failure mode of type I is the most appropriate for increasing the lateral strength and ductility. Seismic performance evaluation and strength calculation of seismic retrofit are performed by guideline by KISTEC(Korea Infrastructure Safety & Technology)'s "seismic performance evaluation and rehabilitation of existing buildings" and Japan Building Disaster Prevention Association. Buildings are modeled and non-linear pushover analysis are performed using MIDAS program.

  • The seismic performance of school buildings has been a matter of common interest socially and academically. The structural system of the school buildings is representative of the domestic low-rise reinforced concrete moment resisting frames, which apply extensively infills in their masonry walls. The masonry infilled walls are divided into full masonry infill in the transverse direction and partial masonry infill in the longitudinal direction. The masonry infilled walls are usually not included in structural analysis during the design process, but affect significantly the seismic performance because they behave with surrounding frames simultaneously during earthquakes. Many researchers have studied the effect of the masonry infilled walls, but several issues have been missed such as the increase of asymmetry by adding the full masonry infill, the size of the mean strength of the full masonry infill, and short column effect by the partial masonry infill. The issues were analytically investigated and the results showed that they should be checked at least by nonlinear pushover analysis in the seismic performance evaluation process. The results also confirm the weakness of the guideline of Korean Educational Development Institute where the seismic performance is basically assessed without structural analysis.
