  • In this paper, we descried a bottom-up document structure analysis method in bilingual Korean-English document. We proposed a character segmentation method based on the layout information of connected component of each character. In many researches, a document has been analyzed into text blocks and graphics. We analyzed a document into four parts: text, table, graphic, and separator. A text is recursively subdivided into text blocks, text lines, words, and characters. To extract the character in bilingual text, we proposed a new method of word of word separation of Korean or English. Futhermore, we used a character merging and segmentation method in accordance with the properties of Hangul on the Korean word blocks. Experimental results on the various documents show that the proposed method is very effectively operated on the document structure analysis and the character segmentation.

  • This paper presents the technique separating objects on the single frame image from the background using region segmentation technique based on active contour. Active contour is to extract contours of objects from the image, which is set to have multi-search starting point to extract each objects contours for multi-object segmentation. Initial rough object segments are generated from binary-coded image using object specific contour information, and then the hole filling is performed to compensate internal segmentation caused by the change of inner object hole area and pixels. This procedure complements the problems caused by the noise from the region segmentation and the errors of segmentation near by the contour. The proposed method and conventional method is compared to verify the superiority of the proposed method.

  • In recent years, high-throughput genome-wide RNA interference screening is emerging as an essential tool to biologists in understanding complex cellular processes. The manual analysis of the large number of images produced in each study spends much time and the labor. Hence, automatic cellular image analysis becomes an urgent need, where segmentation is the first and one of the most important steps. However, those factors such as the region overlapping, a variety of shapes, and non-uniform local characteristics of cellular images become obstacles to efficient cell segmentation. To avoid the problem, a new watershed-based cell segmentation algorithm using a localized segmentation method and a feature vector is proposed in this paper. Localized approach in segmentation resolves the problems caused by a variety of shapes and non-uniform characteristics. In addition, the poor performance of segmentation in overlapped regions can be improved by taking advantage of a feature vector whose component features complement each other. Simulation results show that the proposed method improves the segmentation performance compared to the method in Cellprofiler.

  • Anisotropic diffusion is one of the widely used techniques in the field of image segmentation. In the conventional anisotropic diffusion [1]-[6], usually 4-neighborhood directions are used: north, south, west and east, except the image diagonal directions, which results in the loss of image details and causes false contours. Existing methods for image segmentation using conventional anisotroplc diffusion can't preserve contour information, or noises with high gradients become more salient as the umber of times of the diffusion increases, resulting in over-segmentation when applied to watershed. In this paper, to overcome the shortcoming of the conventional anisotropic diffusion method, a new arusotropic diffusion method based on diagonal edges is proposed. And a method of watershed segmentation is applied to the proposed method. Experimental results show that the process time of the proposed method including diagonal edges over conventional methods can be up to 2 times faster and the Circle image quality improvement can be better up to $0.45{\sim}2.33(dB)$. Experiments also show that images are segmented very effectively without over segmentation.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic segmentation method of the mandible using shape-constrained information in cranio-maxillo-facial CBCT images. The proposed method consists of the following two steps. First, the mandible segmentation based on the global shape information is performed through the statistical shape model generated using the MDCT images. Second, improvement of mandible segmentation is performed considering the local shape information and intensity characteristics of the mandible. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the proposed method was evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively based on the results of manual segmentation by expert. Experimental results show that the Dice Similarity Coefficient of the proposed method was 95.64% and 90.97%, respectively, in the mandible body region including the narrow region of large curvature and the condyle region with large positional variance.

  • The blind segmentation method, which segments input speech data into recognition unit without any prior knowledge, plays an important role in continuous speech recognition system and corpus generation. As no prior knowledge is required, this method is rather simple to implement, but in general, it suffers from bad performance when compared to the knowledge-based segmentation method. In this paper, we introduce a method to improve the performance of a blind segmentation of Korean continuous speech by postprocessing the segment boundaries obtained from the blind segmentation. In the preprocessing stage, the candidate boundaries are extracted by a clustering technique based on the GLR(generalized likelihood ratio) distance measure. In the postprocessing stage, the final phoneme boundaries are selected from the candidates by utilizing a simple a priori knowledge on the syllabic structure of Korean, i.e., the maximum number of phonemes between any consecutive nuclei is limited. The experimental result was rather promising : the proposed method yields 25% reduction of insertion error rate compared that of the blind segmentation alone.

  • In this paper, we present a design technique for the suppression of common-mode(CM) noise in switched-mode power supply boards using the segmentation method. By applying the segmentation method, the example structure is decomposed into two segments with decoupling capacitors and a recombination matrix is extracted for the segments. The effects of the decoupling capacitor on CM noise suppression are examined. The simulation time is significantly reduced on using the segmentation method.

  • Image segmentation is one of the difficult research problems in machine vision and pattern recognition field. A commonly used segmentation method is the Otsu method. It is simpler and easier to implement but it fails if the histogram is unimodal or similar to unimodal. And if some target area is smaller than background object, then its histogram has the distribution close to unimodal. In this paper, we proposed an improved image segmentation method based on 1D Otsu method for a small target detection. To overcome drawbacks by unimodal histogram effect, we depressed the background histogram using a logarithm function. And to improve a signal to noise ratio, we used a local average value by the neighbor window for thresholding using 1D Otsu method. The experimental results show that our proposed algorithm performs better segmentation result than a traditional 1D Otsu method, and needs much less computational time than that of the 2D Otsu method.

  • Since mobile phones are used as common communication devices, their applications are increasingly important to human's life. Using smart-phones camera to collect daily life environment's information is one of targets for many applications such as text recognition, object recognition or context awareness. Studies have been conducted to provide important information through the recognition of texts, which are artificially or naturally included in images and movies acquired from mobile phones. In this study, a character segmentation method that improves character-recognition accuracy in images obtained from mobile phone cameras is proposed. The proposed method first classifies texts in a given image to printed letters and handwritten letters since segmentation approaches for them are different. For printed letters, rough segmentation process is conducted, then the segmented regions are integrated, deleted, and re-segmented. Segmentation for the handwritten letters is performed after skews are corrected and the characters are classified by integrating them. The experimental result shows our method achieves a successful performance for both printed and handwritten letters as 95.9% and 84.7%, respectively.

  • In this study, a novel hierarchical approach is investigated to extract coronary vessel from X-ray angiogram. First, we propose to combine Decimation-free Directional Filter Bank (DDFB) and Homographic Filtering (HF) in order to enhance X-ray coronary angiographic image for segmentation purposes. Because the blood vessel ensures that blood flows in only one direction on vessel branch, the DDFB filter is suitable to be used to enhance the vessels at different orientations and radius. In the combination with HF filter, our method can simultaneously normalize the brightness across the image and increases contrast. Next, a coarse-to-fine strategy for iterative segmentation based on Otsu algorithm is applied to extract the main coronary vessels in different sizes. Furthermore, we also propose a new approach to segment very small vessels. Specifically, based on information of the main extracted vessels, we introduce a new method to extract junctions on the vascular tree and level of nodes on the tree. Then, the window based segmentation is applied to locate and extract the small vessels. Experimental results on our coronary X-ray angiography dataset demonstrate that the proposed approach can outperform standard method and attain the accuracy of 71.34%.
