  • The leaf aqueous extracts from five gymnosperms plant were investigated for allelopathy with five Hibiscus syriacus varieties. The leaf aqueous extract of Pinus rigida had the highest total phenolic compound of 2.21mg/L, whereas the soil under Pinus koraiensis canopy had the highest total phenolic compound of 1.38mg/L. Fourteen phenolic compounds were isolated from five gymnosperm plants by HPLC. Among them, phenolic compounds were the highest in P. rigida (320.56 g/mg) with the primary compound 5-sulfosalicylic acid (312.55 g/mg). The correlation between leaf total phenolic compound and pH was not significant, while the total phenolic compound of the leaf extract changed soil pH. The relative seed germination of H. syriacus varieties showed 25% was threshold concentration. The germination rates of varieties were similar to the control group or showed slight stimulation to treatment of P. koraiensis extract. H. syriacus Cambanha was similar to the control group or showed stimulation in all treated groups. H. syriacus Seohohyang showed stimulation in both root and shoot growth compared to the control group. In other varieties except Seohohyang, shoot growth was similar to the control group, while root growth was stimulated in all treated groups. The extracts of tested gymnosperms showed significantly more stimulation to transplanted Seohohyang seedlings, whereas others were similar to control or inhibited in the greenhouse. The dry weight of Seohohyang was greater in all treated groups than the control group, while other varieties were inhibited. All gymnosperm extracts stimulated the chlorophyll contents of Seohohyang and H. syriacus Koyoro but other varieties were not significantly affected. Accordingly, it is suggested that Seohohyang seems the most desirable when planted within these five gymnosperms.

  • Uniform scions and rootstocks should be produced to ensure grafting success. Light quality is an important environmental factor that regulates seedling growth. The effects of warm- and cool-white light emitting diode (LED) ratios on seedling growth were investigated. Scions and rootstocks of cucumber, tomato, and watermelon were grown in a closed transplant production system using LED as the sole lighting source. The LED treatments were W1C0 (only warm-white), W1C1 (warm-white: cool-white = 1:1), W3C1 (warm-white: cool-white = 3:1), and W5C2 (warm-white: cool-white = 5:2). The seedlings grown in W1C1 had the shortest hypocotyls, and the seedlings grown in W1C0 had the longest hypocotyls among the three tested vegetables. The hypocotyls of watermelon scions, watermelon rootstocks, and tomato rootstocks were shortest in W1C1, followed by those in W3C1, W5C2, and W1C0, but there was no significant difference between W3C1 and W5C2, which remained the same as the ratio of cool-white LEDs increased. In addition, tomato scions had the first and second longest hypocotyls in W1C0 and W3C1, respectively, and the shortest hypocotyls in W5C2 and W1C1, along with W5C2 and W1C1, although the difference was not significant. The stem diameter was highest in W1C0 except for tomato seedlings and rootstocks of watermelon. The shoot fresh weight of scions and rootstocks of cucumber and watermelon and the root fresh weight of cucumber scions were lowest in W1C1. These results indicated that different ratios of LED lighting sources had a strong effect on the hypocotyl elongation of seedlings.

  • Habitat observation, cultural experience of old and present plantation, weather factors in relation to crop stand and water physiology of root and leaf were reviewed. According to habitat observation ginseng plants love water but plate wit talus well grow at drained place with high moisture content in air and soil while ginseng plants were not found in dry or wet place. According to cultivation experience ginseng plants require abundant water in nursery and main field but most old planters believe that ginseng plaints are draught-loving thus require little water. The experience that rain especially in summer i.e unfavorable might be due to mechanical damage of leaves arid leaf disease infection, or severe leaf fall which is caused by high air temperature and coinsided with rain. According to crop stand observation in relation to weather factors abunsant water increased each root weight but decreased total yield indicating tile increase of missing root rate. Rain in summer was unfavorable too. Though rain in June was favorable for high yield general experience that cloudy day and rain were unfavorable might be due to low light intensity under shade. Present leading planters also do loot consider the importance of water in main field. Water content is higher in top than in root and highest in central portion of root and in stem of top. For seedling the heavier the weight of root is tile higher the water content while it reveries from two years old. Water potential of intact root appeared to be -2.89 bar suggesting high sensitivity to water environment. Under water stress water content severly decreased only in leaf. Water content of leaf appeared to be 78% for optimum, below 72% for functional damage and 68% for perm anent wilting. Transpiration or curs Principally through stomata in lower side of leaf thus contribution of upper side transpiration decreased with the increase of intensity. Transpiration is greater in the leaves grown under high light intensity. Thus water content is lower with high light inte nsity under field condition indicating that light is probable cause of water stress in field. Transpiration reached maximum at 10K1ut The decrease of transpiration at higher temperature seems to be due to the decrease of stomata aperture caused by water stress. Severe decrease of photosynthesis under water stress seems to be principally due to functional damage which is not caused by high temperature and Partly due to poor CO2 supply. Water potential of leaf appeared to be -16.8 bar suggesting weakness in draught tolerance. Ginseng leaves absorb water under high humidity. Water free space of leaf disc is %mailer than that of soybean leaf and water uptake appears to be more than two steps.

  • This study was conducted in a glasshouse to examine the possibility of producing tomato plug seedlings in a newly-developed inert phenolic foam medium. Plug seedlings of 'Madison' tomato were grown in four pellet type media, Grodan rockwool, UR rockwool, phenolic foam LC, and phenolic foam LC-lite. Seed germination was checked for 7 days. Seedling growth was measured at 19 days after sowing. The greatest germination was obtained in the phenolic foam LC and phenolic foam LC-lite. Plant height, hypocotyl length, leaf area, dry weight, and fresh weight were significantly greater in the rockwool medium than those in the other media. However, the T/R ratio and stem diameter were the greatest in the phenolic foam LC than those in the other media. The total porosity and container capacity of the phenolic foam LC was higher than in the other media. The air space (%) was lowest in the phenolic foam LC. Overall, the phenolic foam LC and phenolic foam LC-lite produced seedlings with similar growth as the rockwool. These results suggested that both phenolic foam LC and phenolic foam LC-lite have potential to be used in production of plug seedlings of 'Madison' tomato.

  • This experiment has been carried out to establish the most effective rearing method of rice stemborer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker) on artificial diets under the aseptic condition. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Semi·synthetic diet was giving better results in the weight of matured larvae (96.4mg), emerging rate$(96.7\%)$ and number of egg masses (2.6) than other diets studied. 2. Number of egg masses and hatching rate were significantly increased on the semi-synthetic diet and chemically defned diet, and it may be due to the choline chloride in the diets, 3. Rice seedling was used as a convenient food material. However, it requires more labours and causes more damages of larvae in replacement of fresh seedlings. 4. A different result in larval weight and pupation rate was observed between simplified diet no. 1 and diet added with chlorella. 5. Simplified diet resulted in low hatchability in the second generation, which may be due to the mulnutrition of the diet for adults. 6. The pupation rate was significantly decreased by infection of microorganisms on matured larvae.

  • Anaerobic digestion is a collection of naturally occurring processes that convert organic matter and liquid residue, so-called digestate. The use of digestate biofertilizers is one of the important components of integrated nutrient management, as they are renewable sources of plant nutrients for sustainable agriculture. Seeds of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) were germinated in different concentration of Chlorella in order to investigate it's the effect of Chlorella on growth parameters, seed germination and early growth. The experiment using plug tray was conducted at the green house placed in the Sangji University. The experiment consisted of nine treatments including different concentrations of Chlorella sp. culture solution and non-treated control. The germination percentage at the treatment with 25% Chlorella sp. culture solution was greater than that of control. The 50% concentration of Chlorella sp. culture solution was found to promote a better seedling growth in terms of shoot length, fresh weight and dry weight compared to the anaerobic digestate. Results showed that the best concentration of Chlorella culture solution was achieved by the 50% concentration of Chlorella culture solution treatment. As a conclusion, the application of Chlorella culture solution was found to be able to promote the germination and shoots growth of Italian ryegrass.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the growth characteristics of virus-free sweetpotato in hydroponic bag culture. The rooted one-node and upper-shoot cuttings of 'Yeonhwangmi' and 'Mannamiwere' transplanted into the plastic bag (0.5 mm of thickness, $W300{\times}L1,200{\times}H120mm$) culture system filled with commercial horticultural media (TKS-2, Flora Gard Co.) and cocopeat + perlite (3 : 7, 5 : 5, 7 : 3, (v/v). Nutrient solution of National Horticultural Research Station in Japan was separately irrigated $3times{\times}30minutes$ per day (10:00, 14:00 and 20:00 with timer control) by the drip irrigation. The growth of two varieties was not significantly different among four substrates in 15 days, but it was excellent in commercial horticultural media (TKS-2) and cocopeat 3 : perlite 7 (v/v) in 20 days. The growth in 'Yeonhwangmiwas' promoted than that in 'Mannami', and the upper-shoot cuttings of 'Yeonhwangmi' and 'Mannami' showed a significant vine elongation (over 10 and 2 cm, respectively) compared to the one-node cuttings. Fresh weight and dry weight in cocopeat 3 : perlite 7 (v/v) were significant increased than that in cocopeat 7 : perlite 3 (v/v). Therefore, the bag culture system filed with cocopeat 3 : perlite 7 (v/v) was successfully applied on propagation of virus-free sweetpotato seedling, and the result expected that the bag culture system could be commercialized without high financial costs for farmers.

  • The investigate the varietal differences is physiological characteristics related to nutrient uptake and response to nitrogen and phosphorus, a pot experiment was conducted in a temperature control chamber. Three varieties with different cold resistances were grown under normal ($23^{\circ}-25^{\circ}C$) and cold ($15^{\circ}C$) conditions with three nitrogen and phosphorus application levels. The cold temperature was treated for twelve days after thirty days from seeding. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Dry weight and nutrient contents were reduced in cold temperature treatment compared with control and the reduced ratio by low temperature were in order of dry weight 29.4% $P_2O_5$ 21.3%, N 15.3%, $K_2O$ 10.1%, $SiO_2$ 8.7%. 2. The reduced ratio of phosphorus contents of each varieties to normal condition were 13.5% in resistant, 19.5% in medium, 31.1% in susceptible variety, respectively. 3. The phosphorus and silicate contents of plants showed a good relationship with varietal differences in cold resistance but nitrogen and potassium didn't showed, therefore, phosphorus and silicate contents might be used as the index for physiological characteristics related with cold resistance. 4. Phosphorus content slightly increased with nitrogen application but silicate content decreased. Upon phosphorus application, nitrogen and silicate contents were increased.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of fine bubble water treatment on the growth of ginseng seedlings. The growth of ginseng seedlings which were treated with general water and fine bubble water was investigated. The above ground part, the growth of leaf was increased by about 10% and the growth of the stem was about 6%, as the ginseng seedlings which were treated with fine bubble water comparing to the ginseng seedlings treated with general water. Root length was increased about 5%, root width was increased about 8%, roots weight was increased about 9%, and dry weight was increased about 7%. This is not because the whole root growth was increased, but the main root growth was increased about 7%. These results suggested that the physical properties of the fine bubble water stimulated the growth of ginseng seedlings. These results are initial study in the case of ginseng seedlings. Therefore, it can be applicable to the 3-5 years old ginseng plants. Further research will be needed to find out the optimal cultivation condition by controlling the dissolved oxygen amount according to the soil condition and the research applied to the ginseng seedlings.

  • Although the result of the tree height growth after water treatment, Fraxinus rhynchophylla has little affection by the artificial water treatment, the growth showed decreased tendency as the soil moisture decreased, and F. mandshurica showed high growth in relatively high soil moist $78{\sim}90%$ treated area. The growth of root collar diameter of F. rhynchophylla and F. mandshurica also showed decreased tendency as soil moisture decreased. The changes of biomass according to dry weight of root, stem, leaves of F. rhynchophylla demonstrating statistical significance as moisture contents of soil is lower showing decreased biomass tendency and in the treatment of $78{\sim}90%$(A) moisture content showed more than double the higher biomass compare to the treated area of $18{\sim}30%$(D) moisture contents. Also F. mandshurica showed statistical significance in A and D treatment demonstrating differences among each treatment. This can be purported to have physiological effects like weakening of seedling and softening of tissues including leaves as soil moisture decreased. Ultimately it is regarded to the main reason of unsatisfactory growth for F. rhynchophylla and F. mandshurica that are weak to drought resistance. SLA, which is one of the special traits of leaf area of F. rhynchophylla, didn't show statistical significance between moisture process, it demonstrated decreased tendency as the moisture content interval is minimal. LAR and LWR showed increased tendency while moisture content didn't show statistical significance between treatments as they are minimal.
