  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of induced wet-injury conditions on barley seedling growth. Barley seedlings at the three leaf stage were grown in culture solutions with various combinations of dissolved oxygen (DO), nutrients and citric acid (CA) concentrations. Seedling growth was reduced by hypoxia. Root length and root fresh weight were most severely reduced under 1 ppm DO. Shoot growth was slightly reduced but not root growth under low nutrient condition. Seedling growth was reduced by CA in a concentration-dependant manner, Response of seedling growth was efficiently differentiated in a solution containing 1 ppm DO, one tenth of the normal P, K and Mg concentration and 3 mM CA. Under this induced wet-injury condition, overall seedling growth of 6 cultivars was reduced by 11 to 19% compared to the control condition. The results suggest that the induced wet-injury condition can be used for the screening of resistant genotypes at the seedling stage.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of nursery soils and seeding density on seedling growth characteristics in automatic facility for raising of rice seedlings. The seedling characteristics were evaluated for the 10-day and 15-day old seedlings grown in six different nursery soils including farm-made soils. Two levels of seeding amount, 250 g and 300 g/tray ($60{\times}30{\times}2.5$ cm), were applied to compare the seedling characteristics according to seeding density on different nursery soils. There were wide difference in soil components among the nursery soils tested. In acidity of nursery soils, 'Bunoog 2' was the highest, pH 5.1, and 'Samkyung' was the lowest, pH 8.6. The content of available phosphate was the highest value, 843 ppm, in 'Bunong 1' and the lowest (74 ppm) in farm-made soils. The total nitrogen content of 'Bunong 1, 2, 3' and 'Weonjo' soils was higher than there of 'Samkyung' and farm-made soils. There was no difference in plant height among three types of 'Bunong' soils (Bunong 1, 2, 3), but the seedling height grown in farm-made soils was shorter than there in other nursery soils. The plant heigh was slightly taller as the increase of seeding amount from 250 g to 300 g/tray, and the difference in plant height was larger in 15-day old seedlings as compared with 10-day old seedlings. Dry weight of seedlings grown for 15 days in three 'Bunong' soils was heavier than those in other nursery soils. Based on the growing characteristics of seedlings grown in different nursery soils, the heat result was obtained from a nursery soil, 'Bunoog 2', among six marketing nursery soils tested.

  • To suggest ecological management plans for invasion of Salix gracilistyla, stepwise environmental sieve of seed dispersal, germination, seedling and juvenile stages were investigated. About 84% of total seeds were released between May 6 and 10. Germination rates significantly declined with decrease of light intensity from 100% to 30% and 0% (p<.001), but above 60% of seeds germinated in all treatments. Difference of germination rates with 0 and 2cm water level was not significant (p = .571). With increase of elapsed time after seed dispersal, germination rates significantly decreased (p<.001), and seed viability was lost within 16 days. Considering both germination rate of seed and survival rate of seedling, survival rate of all dispersed seeds was only 5% when 8 days passed after seed dispersal. All 22-day-old seedlings (height: 1cm) died under flooding of twice level as its height. With decrease of light intensity from 100% to 30%, survival rates of seedling decreased from 90% to 33% (p<.001). In the case of 45-day-old juvenile (height: 20cm), survival rate was 70% under the water level same as its height. There was significant interactive effect of water level and light intensity on the growth of juvenile (height: p<.001, dry weight: p<.01), and survival rate of juvenile was 10% under +20cm-water level and 30%-light intensity condition. The following management plans for invasion of S. gracilistyla are recommended from these results. (1) Dry condition should be maintained at fringe of wetlands for about two weeks at seed dispersal and germination stage (early May~mid May). (2) Water level should be raised to about 5cm at fringe of wetlands for about two weeks at seedling stage (mid May~early June). (3) Water level should be raised to over 20cm at fringe of wetlands for a long time at juvenile stage. Planting trees for shading can raise management effectiveness (mid June~). (4) As water level manipulating is performed as fast as possible for controlling seedling and juvenile, management become easier and more effective.

  • This study was carried out to obtained the basic information for seed coat dehiscence and seedling performance according to seed size of eight ginseng cultivars. Seed size was separated into four grade(upper 5.0, 5.0-4.7, 4.7-4.0, and under 4.0mm in diameter). Seed coat dehiscence and survival ratio of seedling were not affected by seed size. Aerial parts growth of seedling such as stem length, stem diameter, and leaf area of seedling were larger seed(upper 5.0 mm) better than those of small seeds(4.7-4.0, and under 4.0 mm in diameter). Also root part growths such as root diameter, and fresh weight were larger seed(upper 5.0 mm) higher than those of small seeds(4.7-4.0, and under 4.0 mm in diameter). However, root length was not affected by seed size. Growth status of aerial and root parts of 'unpoong' 'umpoong' and 'opoong' were better than those of other cultivars in each grade of seed sizes. The growth of characteristics of 'hunpoong' and 'hungsun' were less than those of other cultivars.

  • Seedling characteristics of rice on nursery covered with different weight of polypropylene spunbonded fabric(PSF) were investigated to determine the optimum thickness of PSF for raising of healthy rice seedlings. Four different thickness of PSF 40, 60, 80 and $100g/m^2$ were used in the seedling nursery with a conventional polyethylene(PE) film. PSF and PE were taken off in 20 days after sowing(DAS) on April and in 10 DAS on June. Plant height of 20- and 30- day old seedlings in PSF covering nursery was slightly taller as the increase of PSF thickness from $40g/m^2$ to $100g/m^2$, but number of leaves and shoot dry-weight of the seedlings was reduced. Root solidity of seedlings grown in lighter PSF ($40{\sim}60g/m^2$) covering nursery was more favorable than that in relatively heavier PSF($80{\sim}100g/m^2$). The optimum thickness of PSF for the raising of healthy seedlings was $40{\sim}60g/m^2$ PSF at sowing on April 20 and April 30 for single cropping, and $40g/m^2$ PSF on June for double cropping based on the growth characteristics of seedlings investigated at seedling nursery covered with different thickness of PSF.

  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of water stress on yield and quality of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. The water stress treatment was imposed artificially on seedling, flowering and rhizome enlargement stage of the plant. The root yield rate decreased to 19.1%, 18.2% and by the water stress treatment at rhizome enlargement, seedling and flowering stage, respectively. Portion of the products having commercial quality grade (above 20g of rhizome weight) was 93.4% at control plot, while it was 85%, 81.7% and 78.3% when stressed for water at seedling, flowering and root enlargement stage, respectively. Content of extract was the higher in the order of control, water stressed at rhizome enlargement, flowering and the seedling stage. Postive correlationship was found between yield of rhizome and rootlet yield or economic production ratio, and between dry weight of stem and rootlet yield.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the change of endosperm substance and seedling growth in rice seedlings for machine transplanting with use of two rice varieties, which Samgangbyeo (Indica${\times}$Japonica) and Dogjinbyeo (Japonica) were sown on May 8 with five levels of seeding density. 1. The total dry matter weight, leaf area, length of the longest root, number and length of new roots were negatively correlated with seeding density, and the plant height had the similar tendency to them from 20 days after sowing(DAS). 2. The rooting ability was negatively correlated with seeding density and decreased from 35 DAS in Dongjinbyeo. 3. The endosperm substance were exhausted at 25 to 30 DAS in Samgangbyeo and at 25 DAS in Dongjinbyeo. 4. The leaf area was more useful than the ratio of plant height to dry matter weight for judging the constitution of seedlings. 5. The reducing sugar contents in the endosperm were the greatest among parts of rice seedlings followed by leaf and root. The contents in leaf, root and endosperm reached maximal at 10 DAS, and varied with plant parts, seedling growth and varieties in different levels of seeding density. 6. The protein contents in leaf and root of rice seedlings became decreased with seedling growth., and were minimal values at 15 DAS. The content in endosperm was decreased soon after seeding, and minimal at 4 DAS with showing some fluctuation of protein content after then.

  • A serial study on differential response in absorption and translocation of $^{14}C$-bensulfuron-methyl was conducted by use of a group of selected rice cultivars as the tolerant or the susceptible to bensulfuron-methly. Trial 1. Differential Response in Absorption and Translocation of Selected Cultivar Group. The susceptible cultivar group has reached as higher rate as 102%, 113%, 115%, 127% and 113% of the tolerant cultivar group in root absorption per seedling, per unit dry weight, and the rate of translocation from bottom to shoot, respectively. Trial 2. Differential Response in Absorption and Translocation of Selected Rice Cultivar as Affected by Exposed Time of Root Portion upto 48 hrs. ${\bullet}$ Regardless of leaf stage of experimented plants, the amount of absorption per seedling and per unit dry weight has reached rather higher in the susceptible(cv. IR 1846) than the tolerant (cv. Chinsurah Boro II). However, separating by portions, the tolerant was realized higher rate of aborption in root but the susceptible in shoot, respectively. ${\bullet}$ Translocation rate from root to shoot, namely the individual seedling based rate of radioactivity in shoot to total radioactivity, was significantly higher in the susceptile than the tolerant. ${\bullet}$ Depending on higher rate of seedling growth at the time of chemical treatment, the susceptible (cv. IR 1846) was seemed more sensitive even at equivalent rate of absorption and translocation.

  • This study was conducted to obtain proper amount of solid poultry manure in the beginning phase of Deutzia crenata growth. Seedling growth increment, dry weight, inorganic matter uptake and chemical changes of soil according to the concentration of solid poultry manure fertilization. 1. When treated with solid poultry manure, seed germination rate was highest on the control. However, germination rates tended to decrease when treated with at high concentrations. 2. The growth of seedlings treated with poultry manure was always higher than that in control. At the 1.0% of poultry manure treatment, the growth rate and dry weight of the seedlings was highest. 3. The amount of inorganic nutrients absorbed by the seedling was generally high with the 1.0% treatment, declined sharply with the 2.0% treatment. 4. For the planting soil of Deutzia crenata, the higher the concentration of poultry manure, the lower the soil pH. However, nitrogen, available P, K, Na and Mg contents in the soil have increased with higher concentrations.
