The film coated snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) seeds with five different coating materials treated with 3% increase in seed weight were planted at sandy loam soil controlled moisture content of 18, 19, 20 and 21 %. The oxygen diffusion rate (ODR) was calculated from the different moisture content soil. The number of normal seedlings, seedling vigor, and seedling capability in field (seed vigor x dry matter weight) were observed at 9 days after planting and compared to the changes of ODR. The germination rate and ODR were sharply decreased simultaneously in the seeds planted at 21 % soil moisture content. Seedling emergence did not occur at all as the soil moisture content increased above 22 %. Hence this value should be considered as the threshold of soil moisture content for seedling emergence. An ODR value under 20% did not influence the percent emergence significantly. The certain difference observing in the emergence at the same ODR was not related clearly to the condition of soil. So it can be assumed that the limit of soil moisture content for the emergence of snap bean was approximately 20%. The value of 18% soil moisture content may be considered as the optimum for snap bean emergence. There was close relationship between the mean value of ODR in different soil moisture contents and the emergence. The germination rates of the seeds coated with the different materials were quite different when the seeds were planted at 21 % soil moisture. Dry weight of the seedlings from film coated seeds was decreased slightly, but the germination rates were not much different from the non-treated control under relatively higher soil moisture content (21 %). Major factor lowering emergence rate was oxygen stress while film coating act as a minor constraint for snap bean sown in excess soil moisture condition.
The utilization of feeding white sweet lupin (Lupinus angustifolius cv. Uniwhite) seeds supplemented with the limiting amino acids were investigated in day-old single comb White Leghorn male chicks. These were fed a commercial chick mash for the first 10 days and on a semi-synthetic protein-free diet for the next 6 days. For the subsequent 6 days of experimental feeding period, the birds were fed on the protein-free diet, basal diet containing 9.31% of lupin seed meal (LSM) protein, diets supplemented with methionine, methionine + tryptophan or methionine + tryptophan + lysine in the basal diet, and diet containing 9.84% of soybean meal (SBM) protein. When the LSM protein was supplemented with methionine, protein intake, body weight gain, protein efficiency ratio (PER) and net protein ratio (NPR) were increased (p<0.05). The birds excreted lower urinary nitrogen and fecal nitrogen per protein comsumption, had improved apparent (AD) and true (TD) digestibility but did not alter biological value (BV) of the protein. Metabolizability (MEn/GE) and heat production (HP) per MEn intake (HP/MEn) was lowered while energy retention (ER) was highered (p<0.05) compared with those of the basal diet. Also the body weight gain, PER, NPR and ER was increased but the BV and HP/MEn was lowered compared with those of the SBM protein. The results indicated that lupin seed supplemented with methionine increase body weight gain and energy rentention but did not alter biological value compared with those of lupin seed and soybean meal.
Characteristic of seed for Sageretia thea fruits collected from the habitat of harvest season in Jeju and their germination ratio in different temperatures were considered. The average weight was 0.2 g, average diameter was 7.2 mm, average length was 6.5 mm, and size distribution range was 5.1 ~ 10.0 mm. The number of seeds per fruit was 1.8, and 1000 grain weight was 7.77 g with diameter of 3.7 mm and thickness of 1.7 mm in size. The fruit maturation was investigated to be from April 27 to June 1, when the best maturation period was about a week, May 11 to May 18. Also, the fruits grown on May 4 to May 11 were seen to have the bigger in transverse size and weight with a tendency of the earlier maturation date has the greater the number of seeds. S. thea seeds pretreated for 24 hours at $50^{\circ}C$ were not germinated, while most of those pretreated for 24 hours at $4^{\circ}C$ were successfully germinated at any degree of temperature (except at a temperature of $10^{\circ}C$). Particularly, the highest germination rate of 55% was made at $15^{\circ}C$, and plumule and radicle were best grown within the temperature range of $25^{\circ}C$.
Seed coat of sword bean (Canavalia gladiata) is very thick and hard, it is difficult to absorb water during germination and it requires much time that cotyledon come out from seed coat since seminal root appearanced. Therefore this experiment was carried out to increase the germination rate by easing water absorption through mechanical scarification on seed coat. Non-scarification seed did not germinated at 7 days after treatment but scarification seed showed germination rate of 98%. Therefore mechanical scarification of seed coat was increased germination rate. Non-scarification seed absorbed less than 10% water of dry weight at 8 hours after treatment but scarification seed absorbed about 90% water at 7 hours after treatment and more than 150% water at 8 hours and swelled about 1.4-1.5 times in length and width of seed. Germination rate of scarification seed was high under high temperature and it was 96% and 93% at $25^{\circ}C$ and 3$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The rate of cotyledon emergence on clay loam soil was the highest among bed soils. Soaked seed after mechanical scarification in distilled water was germinated faster than non-soaked seed on early in bed soil. The rate of cotyledon emergence was more than 92% at 9 days after sowing but non-scarification and soaked seed was germinated late and showed very low germination rate as 67%.
In a plant breeding program, an efficient selection of desired characters in a population is important. Generally, many agronomic characters in a given population are determined by polygenes and quantitatively inherited. In practice, the genetic relationship between two observed characters which are undoubtedly subjected to the environmental influence is difficult to identify. In recent years, many workers have attempted to understant the genetic relationship between characters in terms of genotypic correlation, and the knowledge thus gained should furnish many important and useful information for the planning of breeding, selection, and interpretation of the result. The genotypic correlation is the result of pleiotropy, linkage of genes(2, 3, 5, 6, 8) and natural or artificial selection(4). The purposes of this study were to estimate genotyric and phenotypic correlations between all possible pairs of nine characters. and to seek certain characters which may be useful as indicators of certain important agronomic characters. Weber and Moorthy(10), Johnson et al. (5) and Sheth(7) found that in general, the genotypic correlations were higher than the phenotypic correlations. Weiss et al. (11) obtained significant positive correlations between maturity and oil content, maturity and low protein content, and high protein content and low oil content. Weber and Moorthy(10) reported the positive genotypic correlations between flowering and maturity, yield and maturity, yield and plant height, yield and seed weight, and negative genotypic correlations between maturity and oil content, and oil content and seed weight. Johnson et al. (5) studied the genotypic and phenotypic correlations among 24 characters and concluded that selection based entirely on a long fruiting period, lateness, heavy seed, low protein, high oil and resistance to lodging would be effective in increasing yield. Sheth(7) found the following positive associations among characters; height and maturity, yield and lodging, low protein content and high oil content, and yield and low protein content. Hanson et al.(1) also reported high negative correlation between seed yield and protein content.
The experiments were conducted to improve the mass production of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, seed in closed recirculation systems. It was observed that smaller females (340g av. body weight) under lower stocking density (1.2 kg/$m^2$)) group produced 3.6 times more fry than larger females (612g av. body weight) under higher stocking density (2.1kg/$m^2$) group when the fry were collected at 30 days after the broods stocked. The clutch removal method where the eggs and sacfry were collected from female mouth followed by artificial incubation showed improved seed production, when compared to the traditional natural mouth-brooding method by harvesting free swimming fry from brood tanks (P<0.05). Under the clutch removal method, short-term incubatin of brooders (14 days) was proven to be more effective than long-term incubatin (21 days). Hatching success of clutch removed eggs was ranged from 55.7 to 91.5% in 1.8$\ell$ of upwelling incubators depending on the different development stages.
Two determinate soybean cultivars, 'Baegunkong' and 'Namhaekong', were planted on 8 Jone, 23 June, and 8 July 1996 at Cheju at planting densities of 33, 43, 53, 63 plants per $m^2$ to determine the optimum planting density of double crop soybean for recently recommended cultivars in Cheju area at various planting dates. The plant height, and the diameter and node number of main stems decreased as planting was delayed. The plant height increased but the stem diameter and node number decreased with increasing planting density. Pod number per plant was greater for Namhaekong than for Baegunkong and was not affected by planting date. Pod number per plant decreased but pod numbers per $\textrm{m}^2$ increased with increasing planting density. The number of seeds per pod was greater at the two later plantings and fewer at the highest planting density. 100-seed weight decreased with delaying planting. The seed weight was lighter at the highest planting density for Baegunkong but there was no difference for Namhaekong among the planting densities. The seed yield of Baegunkong was greater for 23 June and 8 July plantings (2,280 and 2,420 kg/ha) than for 8 June planting (1,450 kg/ha) while that of Namhaekong was greatest at 23 June planting (2,690 kg/ha) compared with 8 June and 8 July plantings (1,890 and 2,080 kg/ha). Across the planting dates and cultivars, seed yield increased from 1,860 to 2,290kg/ha as the planting density increased from 33 to 53 plants/$\textrm{m}^2$ and then leveled off with a further increase in planting density.
The effects of leaf and pod removal on variation of nodal sink components in determinate soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivar 'Danyeobkong' were measured at the experiment field of Chonbuk Provincial Rural Development Administration in 1991. Contrary to the conventional numbering system, node order in this experiment was numbered from top to bottom node. The leaves and pods of main stem from terminal to 5th node, below 6th node, or branches were removed at the growth stage of beginning pod(R3). In the leaf removal treatment, number and weight of pod and seed were highly decreased in upper part leaf removal, especially in removed part. In the pod removal treatment, number and weight of pod and seed were slightly increased in the other part. Cracked seed coat ratios were also high in the leaf removal treatment compared with control but low in the pod removal treatment.
This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between yearly variations of climatic elements and yearly variations of productivity in malting barley. In addition, correlation coefficients among yield and yield components were estimated. The data of yield and yield components were investigated for 10 years from 1991 to 2000. The meteorological data gathered at the Yeosu Weather Station for the same period were used to find out the relationships between climatic elements and productivity. Yearly varation of the amount of precipitation in December and January were large with coefficients of variation(c. v.) of 97.9, 51.3%, respectively, but the variation of the maximum temperature and minimum temperature in April were relative small. Yield, weight of 1,000 grains and culm length were greatly with c. v. of 37.3, 49.3 and 41.3%, respectively. spike length and number of spikes show more or less c. v. of 3.8, 24.7% respectively and number of grains per spike show still less variation with c. v. of 9.4%. Correlation coefficients between temperature of mean, maximum and minimum in February and seed yield and yield components were positively significant at level of 5.1%, respectively. Correlation coefficients between precipitation of April and seed yield were positively significant correlation at the level of 5.1 %, respectively, but the duration of sunshine in April and seed yield were negatively significant at the level of 5.1%, respectively. Correlation coefficients of those, yield components and yield, culm length, spike length, number of grains per spike, number of spikes per $m^2$, weight of 1,000 grains and seed yield were positively significant at the level of 5.1 % respectively.

The present study was conducted to develop seed treatment for the production of healthy and clean peanut sprout. Dry heat treatment of peanut seeds reduced the incidence of the rot. The seed treatment condition at $52^{\circ}C$ for 10 h. was the most efficient without inhibiting seed viability significantly. Seeds were dark cultured at $27^{\circ}C$ for up to 9 days. The treatment of Indole-B and gibberellic acid influenced germination, T50, fresh, dry weight, hypocotyl length, hypocotyl length diameter, root length, number of lateral root and epicotyl of peanut sprout. There were no differences in the germinability of peanut seeds between gibberellic acid treatment methods but higher fresh weight was observed in the GA3 solution spray after 2 hour water soaking. The general growth and lateral root development of peanut sprouts were suppressed by Indole-B which is used for inhibiting root formation and promoting hypocotyls. The treatment of gibberellic acid promoted hypocotyl elongation, but it did not influence on the growth of hypocotyls and root system.
