  • Principles of a novel pulse growing method are described. The method realized in the crystal growing on a seed from melts under raw melt feeding provided a more reliable control of the crystallization process when producing large alkali halide crystals. The slow natural convection of the melt in the crucible at a constant melt level is intensified by rotating the crucible, while the crystal rotation favors a more symmetrical distribution of thermal stresses over the crystal cross-section. Optimum rotation parameters for the crucible and crystal have been determined. The spatial position oi the solid/liquid phase interface relatively to the melt surface, heaters and the crucible elements are considered. Basing on that consideration, a novel criterion is stated, that is, the immersion extent of the crystallization front (CF) convex toward the melt. When the crystal grows at a <> CF immersion, the raised CF may tear off from the melt partially or completely due to its weight. This results in avoid formation in the crystal. Experimental data on the radial crystal growth speed are discussed. This speed defines the formation of a gas phase layer at the crystal surface. The layer thickness il a function of time a temperature at specific values of pressure in the furnace and the free melt surface dimensions in the gap between the crystal and crucible wall. Analytical expressions have been derived for the impurity component mass transfer at the steady-state growth stage describing two independent processes, the impurity mass transfer along the <> path and its transit along the <> one. The heater (and thus the melt) temperature variation is inherent in any control system. It has been shown that when random temperature changes occur causing its lowering at a rate exceeding $0.5^{\circ}C/min$, a kind of the CF decoration by foreign impurities or by gas bubbles takes place. Short-term temperature changes at one heater or both result in local (i.e., at the front) redistribution of the preset axial growth speed.

  • This study was conducted in the central northern area that has a smaller production of winter forage crop compared to the southern areas, in order to identify the optimal mix of seeding, mix ratio and seeding method. The results showed that among the mixed seeding of triticale and crimson clover, the mix of triticale+crimson clover, mixing ratio is 8:2 (w/w), had the largest dry weight of 1,462 kg/10a, which was more than either single seeding of triticale or crimson clover. Although there were no total quantity differences between different mix ratios, there were differences in quantity between sowing types with broadcasting seeding is more than in narrow strips seeding. In forage value of mixed seeding combination, crude protein contents in single seeding of crimson clover showed the highest value at 17.2%, and in single seed of triticale showed the lowest at 7.4%. In mixed seeding combination the crude protein contents were highest in triticale+crimson clover, mixing ratio is 7:3 (w/w), at 9.0%. The mixed seeding between triticlale and legume crops will helpful for increasing forage value.

  • Recently, the interest and consumption of mini watermelon (Citrullus lunatus Thunb.) are increasing due to nuclear family and one person household. However, there's no research for mini watermelon. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to develop standard cultivation method of mini watermelon. The test cultivar is 'Minimi', which is a small-sized fruit, the rootstock is 'Bullojangsaeng', which is a cucurbit line. Grafted plants were transplanted on April 5, 2017, and harvested in early July. Cultivated types were 3 methods, which are ${\cap}-form$, arched, and runner type, and plant spacing were 40, 60, and 80 cm, respectively. The rowth and yield in ${\cap}-form$ was higher than that of the arched and runner types, and the sugar content was higher a bit. The yield per unit area was about 50% higher than ${\cap}-form$, which can be plant density cultivation than that of the runner type. The number of seeds per fruit of 'Minimi' was similar to that of 'Sambokggul', but seed weight was one third lower than that of 'Sambokggul'. The content of lycopene was 30% higher than that of 'Sambokggul' watermelon, and the main sugar content is similar to or slightly less. In conclusion, the ${\cap}-form$ staking cultivation was superior to the runner type or arched cultivation in terms of fruit setting ratio, yield and quality.

  • This experiment was carried out to know the effects of aerial part cutting on the growth and root yield of Achyranthes japonica. The various cutting treatments were tested. Cutting treaments were 20cm and 30cm cutting from the apical part of plant, when plant height was 30cm and 50cm, respectively. The seed amount was the largest at non-cutting, indication that cutting treatment inhibits fruiting. The most effective treatment for the root growth was 30cm cutting just before flowering time. Cutting just before flowering time increased root diameter, length and root weight comparing with non-cutting.

  • The weight ratio of the seed in jujube averaged to 19.1%. The chemical components of dried pitted-jujube were moisture 20.4%, protein 5.3%, fat 1.3%, ash 2.7%, fiber 4.4% and nitrogen-free extract 65.9%. Alcohol insoluble solid content of dried pitted-jujube was 17.4%, in which ammonium oxalate-soluble pectin was 3.7%, water-soluble pectin 3.0%, hydrochloric acid-soluble pectin 1.0%, and sodium hydroxide-soluble pectin 1.0%. Jujube contained sucrose, glucose and fructose as free sugar. The sugars of dried pitted-jujube was composed of sucrose 48.1%, fructose 18.7%, and glucose 11.3%. Drying experiments of pitted-jujube and unpitted-jujube were carried out. Moisture content and brix of dried pitted-jujube were reached at that of dried unpitted-jujube(11%, 78 brix in 48 hours of dry) in 11 hours of drying. And this means that dried pitted-jujube dried 4 times faster than dried unpitted-jujube. The extracts of dried pitted-jujube and dried unpitted-jujube were examinet according to the amount of water added and the extraction time. The brix of dried pitted-jujube extract for 30 min is similar to that of dried unpitted-jujube extract for 150 min. The brix of the extracts did not increase after 150 min extraction. As to the color of extract, 'L' value was higher in dried unpitted-be, while 'a' and 'b' values were higher in dried pitted-jujube.

  • This study was performed to investigate the ameliorating effect of a mixture of extracts from Houttuynia cordata Thunb, Nelumbo nucifera G. (leaf), and Camellia sinensis (seed) (MIX) on acute ethanol-induced hangover in Sprague-Dawley rats. Plasma ethanol and acetaldehyde levels in MIX-treated rats significantly decreased at 3 h and 5 h after acute ethanol administration (25%, 3 g/kg body weight/d) as compared to ethanol-treated rats. Hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activities were significantly higher in MIX-treated rats than in ethanol-treated rats. MIX exhibited high ADH and ALDH activities on direct assays using S9 rat liver fraction for ethanol metabolic enzymes clearance action. These results suggest that MIX could alleviate ethanol-induced hangover symptoms by elevating activities related to hepatic ethanol-metabolizing enzymes against ethanol induced metabolites, and MIX should be further developed to be a new anti-hangover material.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of seeding date on the days and the accumulated temperatures to development stages, leaf emergence, and yield in spring-planted barley. Two barley varieties, Sacheon #6 in spring type (growth habit I) and Saechalssalbori in winter type (growth habit IV), were seeded on four seeding date, Feb. 23, March 4, March 13, and March 24. Growth periods to emergence, heading and maturity were shorten when seeding dates were delayed, except for the heading date of Saechalssalbori (winter type barley)at the later seeding date. The rate of leaf emergence was 0.1915 in a day, and was slightly high when seeding was delayed. The accumulated temperatures were 111-142$^{\circ}C$ for emergence, 683-756$^{\circ}C$ for heading, and 1274-1326$^{\circ}C$ for maturity. In general, the accumulated temperature to heading was higher in Saechalssalbori than in Sacheon #6 because the winter growth habit of Saechalssalbori was not removed perfectly, One-thousand grain weight and yield were reduced by delayed seeding. In order to reduce the yield when barley were planted in spying, it is desirable to select the spring type varieties, and to plant them as early as possible.

  • To differentiate barley responses to drought and salt stress, barley seedlings at the second leaf stage were treated with 218 mM NaCl and 29.5% PEG6000 iso-osmotic to 218 mM NaCl for 6 days. Shoot fresh weight and leaf relative water content of barley seedlings were more reduced by drought compared to salt stress. Hydrogen peroxide content increased under both stress conditions, but its accumulation was more severe at 6 days after salt stress. The activity of ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase (GR) and catalase (CAT) was enhanced until 4 days after salt stress. On the other hand, the activity of GR and CAT increased gradually until 6 days after drought. Among the amino acids measured in this study, the accumulation of glycine, arginine and GABA (${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid) was lower under salt stress than drought. However, considerably larger amount of proline was accumulated by salt stress. It is concluded that the antioxidant enzymes activity and amino acid content of barley seed-lings were differently regulated in response to the isoosmotic condition of salt and drought stress.

  • Recently, there has been increased attention to the development of new plant cultivars with enhanced resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. To develop ginseng cultivars with such traits, systematic breeding programs and comprehensive field studies are prerequisites. In this study, we applied a pure-line selection method to identify a ginseng cultivar with enhanced stress resistance. Phenotypic and agronomic characteristics, seed yield, and physiological responses to biotic and abiotic stresses were investigated according to the guidelines of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). In the newly developed 'Kowon' cultivar, the time of emergence, flowering, and berry maturity were intermediate between those of the controls, 'Yunpoong' and 'Chunpoong'. The stem length of 'Kowon' was intermediate, whereas the root length was shorter and the main root diameter was greater than those of 'Chunpoong'. In local adaptability tests conducted in three regions, the yield of 'Kowon' was $666kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$; 27% and 4% higher than that of 'Chunpoong' and 'Yunpoong'. Diseases such as Alternaria blight, Phytophthora blight, mulberry mealybug, and nematode infestation did not occur in 'Kowon'; and it also exhibited moderate resistance to damping-off and anthracnose. In these cases, yellow spots occurred on aerial parts and the rusty skin of the root, and it exhibited moderate resistance at high temperatures. Our study demonstrates that 'Kowon', which has a high root weight and enhanced biotic/abiotic stress resistance, is a superior cultivar that could increase farmers' income.

  • Bacterial pustule of soybean (Glycine max) caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines is one of the most prevalent bacterial diseases of soybean in Korea, where it causes considerable yield loss. This study was carried out to develop yield prediction model for bacterial pustule by analyzing correlation between the percentage of diseased leaf area and yield. The severe disease incidence of soybean bacterial pustule caused yield losses by 19.8% in 2006 and 16.8% in 2007, respectively. Severity of bacterial pustule greatly affected on 100 seed weight and yield, but did not on stem length, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant. On the other hand, correlation coefficients between diseased leaf area and yield were $-0.93^*$('06) and $-0.77^*$('07), respectively. The regression equation obtained by analyzing correlation between the percentage of diseased leaf area and yield loss in 2006 and in 2007 was y = -3.2914x + 348.19($R^2$ = 0.8603) and y = -2.9671x + 302.08($R^2$ = 0.9411), respectively. These results will be helpful in estimating losses on a field-scale and thereby predicting the production of soybean.
