We inspected seed sizes of 353 genetic accessions of watermelon to diversify functional utility related to seed size and classified them into six representative groups based on their seed sizes. Each group was named as giant seed (GS), big seed (BS), medium size (NS), small size (SS), micro seed (MS) and tomato seed (TS) from the biggest. As the seed size was getting smaller, decreased seed length and seed width, increased seed number per fruit, and decreased seed weight per fruit were observed, but seed shape did not change significantly. In order to study the effect of seed size on fruit weight and seed germination, we developed three near isogenic lines (NILs) with three different seed sizes, SS, MS and TS, from crossing between two accessions 'NT' and 'TDR', and one NIL with seed size of TS from crossing between two accessions 'S55' and 'TDR'. In the study on the fruit weight of NILs with various seed sizes, NS, SS, MS, and TS NILs produced an average of 6.4, 6.3, 5.9, and 4.2 kg fruits, respectively. The bigger seed types showed the better germination rate. NS type showed the highest germination percentage, while TS showed very low germination percentage. Fermentation treatment for 48 hrs increased the germination percentage on TS type seed, but still remained at a low level. In NS, SS, and MS material, the ratio of embryo/whole seed weight was over 50%, meanwhile that of TS was only 44.4% of which low embryo percentage would be one of the reason of low germination percentage. From this study, we concluded that watermelon has very wide genetic diversity on seed size which is somehow related to fruit sizes and germination rate.
In this study, 241 zoysiagrasses (Zoysia spp.) accessions naturally growing in South Korea were collected in order to investigate the seed morphological traits. One of the goals of this study was to identify the morphological characteristics and variations of zoysiagrass seed. For the 241 zoysiagrasses accessions collected, a total of 41% (99 accessions) was interspecific hybrid zoysia, which showed various types of seed variations different from zoysiagrass species. Most of these hybrids zoysiagrasses were classified into Z. sinica type and Z. japonica type. Group I and II included Z. sinica type, this group showed 30.1 and 17.5 in number of seed per spike and 4.6 and 5.2 mm in seed length. Group III and IV included Z. japonica type, this group showed 59.2 and 45.8 in number of seed per spike and 3.3 and 3.4 mm in seed length. There is a need for additional research on growth characteristics and the molecular level for the interspecific hybridization which confirmed that genetic variation from level of gene flow between the species.
To examine the interannual variation of seedfall and seed viability rates of Acer pictum subsp. mono (APSM), we investigated the annual seedfall and seed viability of APSM in the natural broadleaved forest in Mt. Jungwang, Gangwon-do, from 2009 to 2014. The amounts of annual seedfalls from 2009 to 2014 were revealed to be 5,700, 4,060, 60,900, 403,450 and 310 ea/ha respectively. 2013 is presumed to be the masting year since large amounts of seedfall were revealed, compared to that of the other years in the study period. Also, the amount of seeds was significantly different among seed viabilities. Most fallen seeds were damaged or decayed, accounting for 47.88% of the total, followed by empty seeds, undeveloped seeds and sound seeds in that order. The percentage of sound seeds ranged from 6.7 to 31.0%, which marks the lowest average with 16.74%. In the masting year, 2013, a significantly larger number of sound seeds fell at 125,070 ea/ha, on the forest floor than in the other years (320~17,840 ea/ha). Meanwhile, the ratio of damaged or decayed seeds was the lowest at 38%, although the number of those seeds was the largest, 153,310 ea/ha, for the same year. These results imply that the surplus seeds are supplied for natural regeneration in the masting year, supporting the seed predator satiation hypothesis. More long-term researches should be conducted on the seed production of broadleaved trees.
Seeds of medicinal soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merill] are characterized by a black seed coat, white stripe at hilum border, yellow cotyledon, and very small seed weight. Production of this medicinal soybean has recently increased as a consumption increased. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth characteristics and seed yield of collected medicinal soybeans and to obtain basic information on production practices and breeding materials. The collected medicinal soybean lines were cultivated at three locations for two years. Twenty-seven lines were planted at the Research Farm, Korea University, Namyangju city, on May 23, and at the Research Farm, Kyungpook National University, Taegu, on May 20, 1995. In 1996 field experiments, forty-four lines were planted on May 25, at Research Farm, Korea University, and twenty-seven lines among those were planted on June 7 at the Research Farm of National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station, Milyang city. The investigated lines had purple or white flower. Flowering and maturing dates were similar or later than those of the control cultivars. Branch number was greater for the investigated lines. One hundred-seed weight of the lines ranged from 8.5 to 15.0 g. Mean seed yields ranged from 1.54 to 2.89 MT/ha. Nine lines of the investigated medicinal soybeans showed higher yield capacity than the control cultivars. Further research should be done on the improvement of the production system and breeding program of medicinal soybeans.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the growth characteristics and seed productivities of orchardgrass "Hwabsung 2 ho" according to seeding times in the NLRI from 2001 to 2002. The experimental design was a randomized block arrangement with three replications. Seed was sown on 10th, 20th, and 30th of Aug. and 10th, 20th, and 30th of Sept. in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Establishment of seedling was worse in seeding of Aug. 10th because of rainfall. Number of panicles per $1\textrm{m}^2$ was numerous in seeding of Aug. 20th and was fewer according as seeding time was later. But panicle did not nearly appear in seeding after Sept. 20th. Seeding of Aug. 20th produced seed yield of 759kg/ha and have most seed yield components. But according as seeding times were later than Aug. 20th, the seed yield was linearly decreased with seed yield components worse.nts worse.
This study was conducted to investigate the impact of harvest time on yield and seed quality in purple seed coat peanut. Compared to the average Virginia peanut variety, 'Heuksaeng', purple peanut variety has been reported to experience yield loss and reduced seed quality under delayed harvest. We examined the yield components and seed quality at different harvest times from 70 to 110 days after flowering (DAF), with harvesting occurring at intervals of 10 days. The number of mature pods per plant reached a maximum of 51.0 at 80 DAF, and average pod and seed yield peaked at 80 DAF with values of 5,229 and 3,532 kg per ha, respectively. Seed quality drastically decreased after 100 DAF, and the concentrations of two major anthocyanin compounds were significantly lower under delayed harvest. The antioxidative activities of DPPH and ABTS decreased to only 69 and 83% of their maximum values at 110 DAF. On the basis of these results, we recommend that 'Heuksaeng' is harvested approximately 10 to 15 days earlier that average Virginia-type cultivars to obtain the highest yield while minimizing the deterioration of seed quality.
This research was designed to study the effect of Korean dietary lipids on the lipid metabolism and the immune function in young rats . The three different lipid sources were compared lard, perilla oil and fish oil. Three different levels of lipid in the diet, 2%, 15% and 30%,on the weight basis, were included. After four weeks feeding, the rats were sacrified and blood sample was collected to analyze for the total lipid, TG and cholesterol contents in serum. The HDL fraction in serum was seperated by the electrophoresis of lipoproteins. The immune responses were measured by the blastogenesis of spleen lymphocyte stimulated by PHA and in serum were measured. The following results were obtained. Lower body weight gain was shown in 30% lipid diet fed group on the isocaloric basis. In concerning the different dietary lipid sources, there were significantly lower boyd weight gain in fish oil than in perilla seed oil and lard group in 30% lipid groups. Deposition of body fat expressed by epididymal fat pad in serum were significantly different among perilla seed oil, lard and fish oil groups. Perilla seed oil group showed lowest level of total lipid and TG in serum regardless of dietary fat level. The feeding perilla seed oil to rats was resulted in lower serum cholesterol levels than lard in all three levels of fats tested. The HDL fraction was elevated in perilla seed oil group at the high fat level. The stimulating responses of lymphycotes by PHA did not seem to be influenced by different dietary fat sources. However, conA mitogenic responses was significantly increased in perilla seed oil group. The lower level of perilla seed oil (2%, 15%) showed slightly higher responses of ConA, indicating that lower level of perilla seed oil might have stimulatory response on the immune response. The number of antibody forming cells of spleen against SRBC was increased in 30% fat level for all the three kind of fats. However, no effect has been found in plaque forming cell response by the differences in dietary fat sources. There were no significant differences in serum IgG and IgA levels in all dietary groups.
In order to understand the role of seed banks for restoration, seed banks in abandoned rice fields in the Gwangneung National Arboretum, central Korea were investigated using the seedling emergence method. The study sites represented three stages: an initial stage dominated by forbs such as Persicaria thunbergii and Juncus effuses var. decipiens, a middle stage dominated by Salix, and a late stage dominated by Quercus aliena and Prunus padus (in nearby riparian forest chosen as a reference stand). DCA ordination arranged the stands according to the number of years since abandonment. CCA ordination identified the dominant environmental variables correlated most closely with Axes 1 and 2 as $Mg^{2+}$ (intraset correlation was 0.827) and $K^+$ (intraset correlation was -0.677), respectively. Species richness and diversity decreased from the initial stage (H'=2.61) to the middle (H'=1.79) and late (H'=0.75) stages. A total of 49 species $(/m^2)$ and 18,620 seedlings $(/m^2)$ emerged out of the seed bank samples. The DCA ordination and similarity analysis detected a large discrepancy between the composition of the actual vegetation and the seed bank. We conclude that the contribution of seed bank to restoration is low. However, seed bank may help the recovery of forbs after disturbance. Some of our results are consistent with the tolerance model of succession whereas others follow the trajectory of the facilitation model. More research on succession will be required to understand the underlying mechanisms.

The seeds of soybean (Glycine max) were treated with different storage temperature for this study. The seeds of 3 accessions of soybean varieties in aluminum foil pack were used as materials. Storage temperature applied were $-18^{\circ}C$ and room temperature and seed banking (input after 3 days from output) frequencies were every 1, 6, and 12 month respectively for 9 years of storage period. As results seed banking frequency no affected to germination rate and seed moisture contents at $-18^{\circ}C$ storage room for seeds of soybean after 9 years. Germination rate of soybean seeds was changed from 96.2 % to 95.6 % averagely after 9 years of freezing ($-18^{\circ}C$) storage period. There were no differences in decreasing rate by number of seed banking frequency in soybean seeds. On the other hand, at room temperature germination rate of soybean seeds was decreased from 96.2 % to 27.3 % after 9 years which was decreased sharply to 55 % of initial viability after 6 years. The average rate of annual decrease of germination rate in soybean seeds was 38 % of initial viability at room temperature. Initial moisture contents of soybean seeds were 7.3 % and changed to 7.1 % at $-18^{\circ}C$ while it changed from 7.4 % to 7.0 % at room temperature after 9 years of storage period.
