P-type thermoelectric material $Si_{0.8}Ge_{0.2}$ was sintered by Hot Press process (HP) and the effect of boron ($0.25{\sim}2$ at%) addition on the thermoelectric properties were reported. To enhance the thermoelectric performances, the $Si_{0.8}Ge_{0.2}$, alloys were fabricated by mechanical alloying (MA) and HP. The carrier of p-type SiGe alloy was controlled by B-doping. The effect of sintering condition and thermoelectric properties were investigated. B-doped SiGe alloys exhibited positive seebeck coefficient. The electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity were increased at the small amount of boron content ($0.25{\sim}0.5$ at%). However, they were decreased over 0.5 at% boron content. As a result, the small addition of boron improved the Z value. The Z value of 0.5 at% B doped $Si_{0.8}Ge_{0.2}$ B alloy was $0.9{\times}10{-4}/K$, the highest value among the prepared alloys.

Thermoelectric materials and devices are energy-harvesting devices that can effectively recycle waste heat into electricity. Thermoelectric power generation is widely used in factories, engines, and even in human bodies as they continuously generate heat. However, thermoelectric elements exhibit poor performance and low energy efficiency; research is being conducted to find new materials or improve the thermoelectric performance of existing materials, that is, by ensuring a high figure-of-merit (zT) value. For increasing zT, higher σ (electrical conductivity) and S (Seebeck coefficient) and a lower κ (thermal conductivity) are required. Here, interface engineering by atomic layer deposition (ALD) is used to increase zT of n-type BiTeSe (BTS) thermoelectric powders. ALD of the BTS powders is performed in a rotary-type ALD reactor, and 40 to 100 ALD cycles of ZnO thin films are conducted at 100℃. The physical and chemical properties and thermoelectric performance of the ALD-coated BTS powders and pellets are characterized. It is revealed that electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity are decoupled, and thus, zT of ALD-coated BTS pellets is increased by more than 60% compared to that of the uncoated BTS pellets. This result can be utilized in a novel method for improving the thermoelectric efficiency in materials processing.
Zintl phase Mg3Sb2 is a promising thermoelectric material in medium to high temperature range due to its low band gap energy and characteristic electron-crystal phonon-glass behavior. P-type Mg3Sb2 has conventionally exhibited lower thermoelectric properties compared to its n-type counterparts, which have poor electrical conductivity. To address these problems, a small amount of Sn doping was considered in this alloy system. P-type Mg3Sb2 was synthesized by controlled melting, pulverizing, and subsequent vacuum hot pressing (VHP) method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate phases and microstructure development during the process. Single phase Mg3Sb2 was successfully formed when 16 at.% of Mg was excessively added to the system. Nominal compositions of Mg3.8Sb2-xSnx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.008) were considered in this study. Thermoelectric properties were evaluated in terms of Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity. A peak ZT value ≈ 0.32 was found for the specimen Mg3.8Sb1.994Sn0.006 at 873 K, showing an improved ZT value compared to intrinsic one. Transport properties were also evaluated and discussed.

The dispersion of nanoparticles in the host matrix is a novel approach to enhance the thermoelectric performance. In this work, we incorporate the TiC (x = 0, 1 and 2 wt.%) nanoparticles into a p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 matrix, and their effects on microstructure and thermoelectric properties were systematically investigated. The existence of TiC contents in a base matrix was confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. The grain size decreases with increasing the addition of TiC content due to grain boundary hardening where the dispersed nanoparticles acted as pinning points in the entire matrix. The electrical conductivity significantly decreased and the Seebeck coefficient was slightly enhanced, which attributes to the decrease in carrier concentration by the addition of TiC content. Meanwhile, the lowest thermal conductivity of 0.97 W/mK for the 2 wt.% TiC nanocomposite sample, which is ~16% lower than 0 wt.% TiC sample. The maximum figure of merit of 0.90 was obtained at 350 K for the 0 wt.% TiC sample due to high electrical conductivity. Moreover, the Vickers hardness was improved with increase the addition of TiC contents.

IMO (International Maritime Organization) in the UN (United Nations) set up that aim at reducing $CO_2$ emission from ship by up to 30 percent until 2030. The final purpose of this study is the development of marine thermoelectric generation system using waste heat from vessel of internal combustion engines. Before the development of marine thermoelectric generation system, this paper carried out the fundamental heat analysis of marine thermoelectric generation system. It was able to obtain the valuable results about the efficiency improvement of the thermoelectric generation system. The results is as follows : 1) It was confirmed that the efficiency of thermoelectric generation system improves to 8.917 % with increasing the temperature difference of peltier module by reducing the temperature difference between peltier module and heat source at the hot side. 2) System efficiency according to change in the external load resistance was confirmed that the change width of about 6 % which does not significantly occur. 3) System efficiency in the case stainless steel at the same condition is 8.707 %. System efficiency could be confirmed that the stainless steel is higher than duralumin (8.605 %), copper (8.607 %).

In this study, we investigate the effect of an Sb-deficiency on the thermoelectric properties of double-filled n-type skutterudite ($In_{0.05}Yb_{0.15}Co_4Sb_{12-x}$). Samples were prepared by encapsulated induction melting, consecutive long-time annealing, and finally spark plasma sintering processes. The Sb-deficient sample contained a $CoSb_2$ secondary phase. Both the double-filled n-type skutterudite pristine and Sb-deficient samples showed metallic behavior in electrical conductivity with increasing temperature. The carrier concentration of the Sb-deficient sample decreased compared with that of the pristine sample. Due to a decrease in carrier concentration, the Sb deficient sample showed decreased electrical conductivity and an increased Seebeck coefficient compared with the conductivity and coefficient of the pristine sample. Furthermore, the Sb deficient sample showed an increase in the power factor (${\sigma}{\cdot}S^2$); the power factor maximum shifted to athe lower temperature side than ones of the pristine sample. As a result, the Sb-deficient sample represents an improved average figure of merit (ZT) and a $ZT_{max}$ temperature lower than that of the pristine sample. Therefore, we propose that Sb-deficient double-filled n-type skutterudite thermoelectric material ($In_{0.05}Yb_{0.15}Co_4Sb_{12-x}$) be used in the 573~673 K temperature range.
0.5 at% $Na_2$Te-doped ($Pb_{0.7}Sn_{0.3}$)Te and ($Bi_{0.2}Sb_{0.8}$)$_2$$Te_3$ powders were fabricated by mechanical alloying process. 0.5 at% Na$_2$Te-doped ($Pb_{0.7}Sn_{0.3}$)Te powders were charged at one end of mold and ($Bi_{0.2}Sb_{0.8}$)$_2$$Te_3$ powders were charged at the other end of a mold. Then these powders were hot-pressed to form p-type ($Pb_{0.7}Sn_{0.3}$)Te/($Bi_{0.2}Sb_{0.8}$)$_2$$Te_3$ functional gradient materials with the segment ratios (the ratio of ($Pb_{0.7}Sn_{0.3}$)Te to ($Bi_{0.2}Sb_{0.8}$)$_2$$Te_3$ ) of 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1. Power generation characteristics of the ($Pb_{0.7}Sn_{0.3}$)Te/($Bi_{0.2}Sb_{0.8}$)$_2$$Te_3$ were measured. When the temperature difference ΔT at both ends of the specimen was larger than $300^{\circ}C$, the ($Pb_{0.7}Sn_{0.3}$)Te/($Bi_{0.2}Sb_{0.8}$)$_2$$Te_3$ with the segment ratios of 1:2 and 1:1 exhibited larger output power than those of the ($Bi_{0.2}Sb_{0.8}$)$_2$$Te_3$ and 0.5 at% $Na_2$ Te-doped ($Pb_{0.7}Sn_{0.3}$)Te alloys. The maximum output power of the ($Pb_{0.7}Sn_{0.3}$)Te/($Bi_{0.2}Sb_{0.8}$)$_2$$Te_3$ predicted with the measured Seebeck coefficient and the estimated electrical resistivity was in good agreement with the measured maximum output power.
Thermoelectric properties of Bi$_{2}$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{ x}$)$_{3}$(0.05$\leq$x$\leq$0.25) prepared by mechanical alloying and hot pressing, were investigated. Contrary to the p-type behavior of single crystals, the hot-pressed Bi$_{2}$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{ x}$)$_{3}$ exhibited ntype conduction without addition of donor dopant. When $Bi_2(Te_{0.85}Se_{0.15})_3$powders were annealed in (50% $H_2$ + 50% Ar) atmosphere, the hot-pressed specimen exhibited a positive Seebeck coefficient due to the reduction of the electron concentration by removal of the oxide layer on the powder surface and annealing-out of the excess Te vacancies. Among the Bi$_{2}$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{ x}$)$_{3}$fabricated by mechanical alloying and hot pressing, $Bi_2(Te_{0.85}Se_{0.15})_3$ exhibited a maximum figure-of-merit of 1.92 $\times$$lO^{-3}$/K.
